(II) Chapter 19 (Strange Happenings)

*From this chapter, discover how secrets unfold*

One cold night I lay in my room, my head on Anthonio’s chest. There was darkness and a snow storm outside. I couldn’t find sleep and just stared about the dark room.
Anthonio was sleeping peacefully and so I decided to go get myself a glass of milk.

I got out of bed and left the room. On my way down the hallway, I passed by Leandro’s door and just at that moment, I heard him shout. I shook afraid. What was going on??

Without much thinking and with shaky hands, I held his doorknob and opened his door, stepping into his room.

He immediately turned to me, his breathing raged. He was sitting up and was all sweaty. He looked slightly terrified.

“L– Leandro? What’s wrong?” I asked softly, approaching him. He stared at me like he hadn’t heard a word of what I’d just said. Then he looked around.

“There was someone in here...”

He immediately got out of bed and searched his room furiously.

“Leandro, there’s no one here.” I said, afraid.

“Donnica there was someone hovering me while I slept. I swear.”

He ran his fingers through his hair.

“It was a dream...”

“No!” he retorted and I shook, “It’s not the first time! Even when I go for missions. Sometimes I feel a presence hovering over me but I open my eyes and there’s no one! This night I saw someone. My eyes slowly opened and I saw a dark figure over me! I tried to stand but before I could, it hit me hard across the face hitting my eye and causing me to yell out in pain, blurring my vision. Whoever it was, the person just vanished!”

I stared silently at him. Afraid and not ready to believe him.

He stared at me then went to switch on the lights and that was when I noticed his left eye was a little swollen and was becoming purple.

“Believe me now? Can I do this to myself??” he said angrily. I nodded, believing him and fear taking over me.

“Oh my gosh. Sit down.” I made him sit and went over to the little refrigerator in his room and took a bag of ice from it.

“Put this on your eye.” I gave him the ice and he put it on his eye.

“I don’t know what the fuck is going on. Things are getting stranger everyday. In my life. I tried to ignore the strange things that happen to me. I decided not to tell y’all but it’s way too much. Someone wants to kill me.”

I looked at him, horrified.

“D– don’t say that.”

At that moment, there was a knock at his door.

“Must be Anthonio or a guard. Lemme go open it.”

I went towards the door and opened it. To my surprise, there was no one. Only a dark hallway. And then my gaze dropped to the floor. There was a huge book. I picked it up and entered the room.

“Who was it?”

“I saw no one but this strange book.”
It had strange graphics on it and looked like some old diary with a lock on it.

Leandro stood up and approached me.

“See what I was talking about? Now what the hell is this?”

“I don’t know...”

And then there was another knock on the door and this time Anthonio stepped in.

“Hey. Heard a shout. What’s wrong?” he asked.

Leandro told him the same thing he’d told me and about the book we’d just found.

“Hmm. Have you tried to break the lock?” he asked.

“Have you looked at it? It’s not the type we could easily break. This thing needs its key and only its key.” Leandro replied.

There was silence for a while and then I noticed there was something like a piece of paper stuck on the back of Anthonio’s T-shirt.

“What’s this?” I asked, pulling the paper off. There was something written on it in Italian.

“How did it get on my back?” he asked.

“We don’t know, Anthonio. Please, someone should translate this.”

I gave it to Leandro who read it in English:

Find the key in the blue room. Rome.′

“What??” I asked still confused.

The boys stared at each other. I wasn’t the only one confused.

“Blue room? Rome?” Leandro repeated. Anthonio sighed, exasperated.

“What’s really going on. You know what? Let’s keep this mystery and talk about this tomorrow. Because right now, I’m lost. Okay?” he proposed.

I looked at Leandro.

“You’re probably right. Tomorrow then.”

“Okay.” I added.

I wondered where all this was gonna lead us.
