(II) chapter 1

I missed Velma as the days passed. I felt somewhat lonely when doing the chores. I had no one to gossip with or speak to about my day. Leandro was fit to take her place, but recently he was often away. Always on some dumb missions that made him more of a cold murderer than he already was.

What I liked about Leandro was his positivity. He smiled most of the time and always saw the positive side of things in whatever he did. He scarcely frowned. Which was a good thing, but also a scary thing because I realised he would smile when killing someone. Thoughts of the night he’d killed the assassin sent to murder me, rushed into my mind.
I shivered at the horrific thought. Blood everywhere that night. Disgusting.
I was cutting the meat for my soup, when my Prince to be entered the kitchen. Immediately, I gave him all my attention.

“Hey, you need anything?” I asked, sweetly.

He smiled at me, and it warmed my heart like always. I still wasn’t used to it, but one thing for sure was that it pleased me greatly.

“Always so caring.” he mused.

“When it’s you, yes.”

“I see. How about I ask you the same question.”

I stared at him.

“I don’t understand.”

“Do you need anything? Is there anything you want and that I can help you with?” he asked,
“And don’t give me that answer we both know about.”

I giggled because he knew me. I would’ve probably answered that I wanted him.

“Why?” I asked.

“It’s not possible.”

Yes, it was possible. Especially after we’d almost kissed that particular night, after our mission. But I wasn’t prepared to argue with him, nor did I want to get him angry.

I thought for a short while and then it hit me. I knew what else I wanted.

“Can I call my parents?” I asked slowly, a lump in my throat. My eyes prickled at the thought of them.

Anthonio was silent for a short while. Then he turned and looked at the guards that stood in the living room, before looking at me again.

“I can’t help you with that. It was a bad idea to have allowed you call them the first time.” he finally said.

I tried not to cry.

“Oh, okay. I– it’s fine then.” I lied, trying to sound as okay as ever. But my little act was a total failure.

Tears welled up my eyes and I made sure not to blink, so they would not roll down my cheeks.

Anthonio stared at me, his expression empty.

“Understand.” he said.

“I know. I understand completely.” I forced a smile and turned. I continued to chop my pieces of meat, wiping my tears with my upper arm.

Though I was focused on the chopping board, from the side I saw Anthonio close the kitchen door behind him. I didn’t look up still because I didn’t want him to see I was still crying.

I was surprised when he approached me and made me turn. I kept my eyes down but with a finger, he raised raised my chin so I could look him in the eyes. His eyes were so beautiful, though I couldn’t read them. His expression remained empty.

“I’m gonna regret this.” he murmured and I stared at him, confused.

“Regret what?”

He didn’t reply. Instead, he took his phone out and gave it to me. I stared at him, surprised and speechless.

“Call. Now. You have a minute.” he stated, firmly.

I felt like everything on my inside was melting. He drove me crazy with each day. I was falling deeper into his pit.

“Are you serious?”

“Fifty five seconds left.”

I literally seized his phone and dialed my father’s number. He watched me silently.

It rang and I got nervous. Then my call was picked! I looked at Anthonio who motioned for me to put it on loudspeaker, which I did.

"Hello?” I heard my dad’s voice on the other side. Tears immediately rushed down my cheeks again.

“Dad? It’s me. Donnica...”

"Oh my God! Shanice?! Shanice!!” I heard him my mother. I was so happy when soon enough, I heard her voice.

"My darling?! How are you?! We miss you!”

“I miss you both too! I– I don’t have a lot of time. I just had to let you know I’m still alive and fine. Dad how is the investigation??”

"It’s still going on, my darling. We can’t wait for all this to be over.”

“Me too, papa. I have to go now. I love you. Take care of yourselves.”

"No, you take care of yourself, sweetheart.”

“I will. Bye, bye. I love you!”

"We love you too!”

With a smile on my face, I hung up. Then I wiped my tears and turned to Anthonio, who’d been listening.
I gave gave his phone back.

“Thank you so much. H– how can I thank you??” I asked, happily.

He raised a single finger and pressed it against his beautiful lips.

“Of course.” I nodded with a smile.
“I won’t tell anyone.”

“Good.” he turned to leave.

“Thank you.” I whispered.

“You’re welcome.” he replied, before eventually leaving the kitchen.

I leaned against the table, hand on my chest. Anthonio was a good person. The life he was living had destroyed him. He had helped me more than once and the only way I thought of helping him was by changing him. I was going to teach him how to love.
He was still very confused, but I was going to help him see clearly.
He was going to love me. Whether he liked it or not, I was going to make him mine.
