Chapter 62 (The Effect)
It’d been two days since Anthonio had left for Australia and I felt frustrated and worried. Worried because I knew he would return as rough and cold as ever. After what he’d been given to sniff. It annoyed me. And him who was starting to be a little friendly and less cold than usual. I knew what to expect at his return.
I was right about Anthonio. When he’d returned, he was as cold and unreadable as the first time I’d met him in that prison’s interrogation room. I broke inside. All those efforts I’d made were useless now! Like he’d been brainwashed. It was over.
One morning, I was in the kitchen preparing breakfast when he stormed in.
“Why isn’t breakfast ready??” he asked rudely. I swallowed. This wasn’t the Anthonio I’d seen the week before. This was the murderer and drugged psychopath. He could decide to slap or strangle me to death at any moment.
“I got up a little late.” I replied.
“Seriously? How useless are you?? Where’s Velma?”
“I don’t know.”
“What do you mean you don’t–”
“I don’t know! Why don’t you send someone to go get her and stop wasting my time.” I replied, annoyed myself.
“Mind how you speak to me or you’ll regret it.” was his deadly warning. I remained quiet but really angry. I who was beginning to get comfortable in that house. Now death threats were in the air once again.
He marched past me to grab a mug and then roughly taking the kettle, he tried to pour himself some hot water but it poured on his hand and he groaned in pain, dropping the kettle.
My immediate reaction was to try and help him but when I approached him, he stopped me.
“Stay where you are. You bring nothing but trouble and clumsiness.”
I stared in disbelief. There was no sign of tenderness in his ways. His expression was vague and he always frowned. I stepped back.
“Keep it for yourself. Clean the water up.” was his reply before leaving the kitchen.
I stood there lost and angry. Tears threatened to well up my eyes but I blinked them away. I wasn’t a weak chick. I would never be. I swallowed and got a grip of myself before getting a rag to clean the spilled water.
The next day, I sat in the living room. Anthonio passed by.
“Hello.” I greeted. He gave me an ugly stare and walked out of the house.
It broke my heart. I even thought of going to his room and searching for those drugs to get rid of them. But if I got caught? Hmm! That would be the total end of me. For real.
As I thought, Velma walked in. She was from buying things for the house. I immediately followed her to the kitchen.
“Velma?” I called
“Is– is there anyway to contact Leandro.”
She stared at me.
“Donnica, my phone is supervised by the boss. I can’t let you call anyone. Else we’re both death.” she replied more than seriously.
“It’s Anthonio the problem I can’t bare any longer.”
I took my time to explain everything to her. From the drugs to his change in attitude.
She was surprised.
“Why would the boss do that?”
“To have certain control over Anthonio? Or to make him the coldblooded psychopath that he is.”
“Right. And Anthonio is addicted to these drugs. He can’t help it but take them.” Velma said.
“Please, Velma. Can I send him a text message?”
“Leandro doesn’t have a particular number. He changes his sim cards after every week. To be untraceable.”
“Oh no. And– and you don’t have his recent?”
“No, I don’t. That’s why I always wait for him to call me first.”
That night, I cried in my pillow. I needed to let all negativities out. Through tears. I was tired.
I was about to sleep when there suddenly was a knock at my door.
“Who is it?” I asked. No answer. Then there was a knock again.
“Who is it, dammit!” I asked, annoyed. When I got no reply, I got out of bed and walked to the door.
I opened it and there was no one. The corridor was dark. My eyes dropped to the floor and to my surprise, there was a phone. Confused, I picked the phone and almost immediately, it began to vibrate. A call.
Not knowing how to react, I got into my room with it and closed the door behind me.
No number appeared on the screen.
After hesitating for a while, I decided to answer.
I almost screamed when I heard Leandro’s voice.
“Oh my gosh! Leandro?” I whispered aloud, in order not to be heard.
“Yes amor. How are you??” he asked.
“I’m happy to hear your voice but I’m not fine, Leandro. Not at all.”
“Oh, don’t tell me that. Why??”
I heard Leandro sigh, completely exasperated.
I told him all that had happened.
“This is unbelievable. Anthonio is harming himself. His brain!” Leandro exclaimed angrily.
“Please Leandro, I need your help. Send that medicine please.”
“Even if I do, he won’t take them. I have to be around.”
“Then come back here. Please!” I cried.
Leandro was silent for sometime.
“Please say something.”
“I’ll– I’ll do my best to get there. Maybe after tomorrow.”
I almost jumped.
“Oh, please do! He’s worse than ever now. And with this mouth of mine, I might say something carelessly and end up dead. He was getting better, friendlier and considerate. Until he was given some drugs again. He scares me.”
“Don’t worry. Avoid his trouble. Avoid talking too much. I’ll be there after tomorrow.”
“Oh, thank goodness! Please don’t let me down.”
“I won’t. Now put the phone you have back.”
“F– from where I picked it?”
“Yes. Goodnight amor.”
“Goodnight. Thank you.”
We both hung up and I went to drop the phone where I’d picked it. Then I closed the door.
I was gonna return to my bed but decided to check the phone one last time.
When I opened the door, it was gone. Just a few seconds after I’d dropped it. And the hallway was as empty as when I’d first checked. Surprised, I closed my door.
Leandro was gonna be back soon and that was the only thing that consoled me.
