“Kill you, kill you, kill you” the green-eyed man shouted repeatedly into my ear. I tried to cover my ears, but I couldn’t move my hands. They were tied together to a pole above my head. I tried to scream, but no sound came out of my mouth. I tried to move my legs, but I couldn’t feel it. I tried everything, but it was like my body was numb, unresponsive. I feel helpless.
Green eye man looked at me evilly and pulled a knife from behind. The silver color of the knife glistened in the bright moonlight, it’s sharp edges sending a shiver throughout my body. He brought his hand up for the air before stabbing me in my chest. But I didn’t feel any pain. I didn’t feel anything.
It was like souls were reversed. Instead of me, the person tied to the pole was my mom. She screamed loudly as he pierced the knife onto her chest while I stood there, watching her screaming for help.
“No!” I screamed and awoke with a start, my heart beating loudly. I clenched my bed sheet tightly as tears started to roll down my face and I hugged myself with my arms around me. This nightmare, it brought back the memories of past which I’m trying to forget. I cried harder, gripping my hair tightly. The memories which I could never forget…..
I continued to cry silently, my hands covering my sobs. I tried to ooze out the pain. But I can’t. The feeling that I’m alone in this room made me more scared and I cried harder and I started to choke. I couldn’t take this pain anymore, It’s too much for me to bear. I need to do something to reduce my pain. I pushed myself up from the bed and headed towards the bathroom. I locked the door of the bathroom and turned on warm water and splashed it over my face for a few minutes. I turned off the water and got a towel to dry my face. My eyes were bloodshot and there were dark half-moons under my eyes.
I opened the cabinet and started pulling out everything, but the thing I needed wasn’t there. I opened every other cabinet, trying to find the razor. Finally, I found it in a cabinet, beside a shampoo bottle. I bit my lip as I stared at it in silence. I could stop this pain. I could stop all this for just a bit. I took the razor with trembling hands and brought it towards me. Holding onto the small metal piece, I edged it closer to myself. As I was about to make a small cut on my forearm, I heard a knock, startling me.
“Lia, are you in there?” I dropped the razor and started to panic. I picked the razor from the ground and threw it inside the cabinet. I then started picking everything from the ground, arranging it in its position.
“Lia?” Logan knocked again, this time harder.
“Karolia, open the door!” he shouted.
“Y-yeah. I-I’m coming” I stammered. My hands started to shake as I kept dropping things to the floor with a loud noise.
“If you don’t open it right now, I’ll break it” he shouted from the other side. I took a few deep breaths to control my racing heart before walking towards the door hesitantly. I unlocked the door and opened it to see Logan standing there with his fist clenched, as if ready to break the door.
“Y-you scared me, Logan. What’s the matter?” I tried to put an angry face but instead, it was a sad frown. As soon as he saw me, his anger washed away and his face was filled with concern.
“What happened?” he took a step forward.
“Nothing” I tried to smile, even though it was very difficult.
“Tell me, what happened? He restated, obvious of my lie.
“I told you it’s nothing. By the way, what are you doing in my bedroom?” I asked, trying to change the topic.
“I heard noises coming from your bedroom. Are you alright?“. In the haste of searching for that small metal, I didn’t realize I was making too much noise.
“Ye-Yeah. I’m fine” I said, laughing nervously. He stared at me unconvinced by my answer, trying to figure out from my face. But all he got is an emotionless face. He nodded his head.
“You have classes tomorrow. Now go get some sleep” he ordered and left the room. So demanding!
I was relieved when Logan didn’t ask for any questions. I know I was far too stressed to sleep, so I did something I have never done before. I deliberately took unnecessary cold medicine, the kind that knocked me out for a good six hours.
I woke up early, having slept soundly, without any nightmares. Thanks to my gratuitous drug use. I had just finished brushing my teeth and was heading downstairs when I heard Logan speaking in a powerful and formal tone through his phone.
“Good morning” I smiled at him when our eyes met. But Mr. Hothead chose to ignore me and turned around and continued to talk through his phone
“Good morning,” I said more loudly this time, in order to irritate him more. He turned around and shushed me and then continued to talk again. Why can’t he wish back? At least a smile would be enough. But he’s Logan, right? Won’t even smile! I went behind his back and poked on his shoulder. He turned around, glaring at me.
“Good morning” I smiled widely at him. He just raised his eyebrow at me.
“Yeah, I’ve arranged a conference meeting today at -” Suddenly I snatched his phone from his hand cutting off his conversation, taking him by surprise. Ha, let’s see what he’s going to do now!
“What.The. hell” he growled as I smirked at him. I started to take a few steps back, his phone still in my hand.
“Lia, give back the phone. It’s a business call” he said as I turned around and started to run. I was laughing loudly as I got chased by him.
“KAROLIA, GIVE BACK THE PHONE” he yelled at me, trying to catch me as I rounded the couch.
“Nope” I laughed loudly, turning my head back only to realize he was close to me. Really really close. Then suddenly he grabbed my waist and pulled me back. A squeal of surprise escaped my mouth as I tripped on my feet. He lost his balance and both of us fell onto the couch. I was on top of him and him under me, our faces inches away from each other. Tingles and sparks danced on my skin at our contact. I could feel my heart beating loudly as we stared at each other, so lost in each other gaze.
“Can you please get off of me?” I asked him, breaking the silence. He muttered something under his breath, speaking so quickly that I couldn’t understand. I guess he didn’t like that I broke our staring contest.
“I think I should say that to you” he smirked. I blushed as I realized I’m on top of him. I placed my hands on his chest and pushed myself up. But he interlocked his arms around my waist and pulled me closer. Our lips were inches apart, our chest pressed together, making it hard for me to focus on his words.
“Next time, don’t ever snatch my phone away. You understand?” He said slowly. His words weren’t angry, but with amusement. I nodded my head immediately and struggled to free from his grip.
“And, -” he trailed off
“Don’t forget to release the breath you’re holding on now,” he smirked and his phone started to vibrate which made me snap out from his intense gaze. I jolted up as soon as he released his grip around me.
“Yes, Xavier. Tell me” he said and left the living room. Then I released my breath once I made sure he was out of the sight.
My classes just got over and I’m currently standing near my locker with no idea how I’m gonna reach home. You may ask where the hell is Scarlet? But that’s the same question I’m asking myself right now. While we were having our lunch at the cafeteria, she got a call and then she left. I thought she would come back and pick me up from the university after classes, but guess I was wrong.
OH MY GOD!! Now how am I supposed to reach home!?
“Hey, Karrie” Tyler shouted from a distance as he weaves his way through the crowd.
“Hey” I replied as he reached my locker, not in the mood to talk.
“Bad mood?” he asked me, noticing my crestfallen face.
“Yeeahh” I trailed off.
“Why, may I ask?”
“I don’t have a ride back to the mansion. Scarlet is missing since lunch, most probably with Patrick.” I said, hopelessly. Tyler wrapped his arm around my shoulder and pulled me closer to him.
“Oh, Karrie. That’s not a problem. I can always give a ride” he said grinning at me.
“But, you said you’ve to go somewhere with Finn after class today”
“I’m sure Finn will understand,” he said. I smiled at him gratefully and we weaved our way to the parking lot. Literally, I was running to catch up to his long strides.
We talked about random things on our journey back to the mansion. I told him about my life in Worcester, my high school friends, beautiful memories. But one thing I kept as a secret from him. That my parents are dead. I lied to him that my parents are on a business trip and Grecia is my mom’s friend. So since they are always traveling, Grecia is my guardian. I really feel guilty lying to him, but it’s for the good!
“And… we’re here!” Tyler exclaimed. I looked out of the window and mansion’s huge gate came into my view.
“Thank you so much, Tyler,” I said and gave him a side hug.
“Always” he replied. I stepped out of the car and bid him goodbye. It was a five-minute walk from the gate to the main door. I actually hate to walk, but this five minutes gave me time to think. Think about everything that happened in my life. From being homeless to living with the most eligible bachelor of New York under the same roof. I think I’m slowly falling in love with Logan. I know it sounds very soon, but it’s the truth. As I neared the main door, loud noises were heard from inside. I dashed inside and the loud noises were increasing louder and louder. I froze, my mouth parted speechless as I reached the living room.
“DAMN IT” Logan screamed in frustration as he broke a glass with his hand. A bowl which was used to keep fruits, many glasses were scattered across the floor.
“Logan?” He ignored me and slammed his fist onto the wall. I flinched at the sound.
“Logan” I took a small step forward, scared to go near him. Right now he looks murderous and I would be lying if I say I’m not scared. He slowly turned around, his cold eyes meeting with my brown one.
“What?” he spat, clearly annoyed by my presence.
“What’s all this? Are you alright?” I asked him, taking another small step forward.
“None of your business,” He said and I winced visibly at his sudden flash of rage and stepped back.
“Oh my god!” I breathed once I saw Logan’s left hand. Blood was oozing from his knuckles and I rushed to him, forgetting about my fear. But he pushed me away and turned around, facing away from me.
“I’m fine” he growled, running his bloody hands through his hair
“No your hurt” I insisted, going around him. I took his hand in mine and examined the wound. He winced slightly as I trialed my fingers on his wound.
“Why? Why do you have to hurt yourself” I whispered as he stared at me with an emotion I couldn’t figure.
“Come.” I pulled him to the nearest washroom. I half expected him to pull his hand back and throw curses at me for not leaving him alone, but he followed me to the bathroom silently. I took a towel from the cabinet and began wetting it.
“I’m fine” he repeated. Ignoring his words, I walked up to him and took his hand, cleaning his wound. I began to grow uncomfortable once I noticed that Logan had not taken his eyes off me the entire time.
“Can you stop staring?” I frowned, my eyes fixed on his hand.
“It’s not my fault that you’re so beautiful” he replied huskily and my cheeks flushed. I looked up to meet his mesmerizing electric blue eyes. He stepped closer and my heart started to accelerate faster. Slow down, heart!
“The blush on your cheeks is lovely.” He murmured softly. He gently brushed my cheek with his other hand. I stiffened under his touch. My blood was racing and I wished I could slow it. He lowers his head and we stand there in the bathroom staring at each other. I realize there are only centimeters separating our lips. He seems to realize this and swiftly leans away. Then he smooths back a strand of hair that fell on my face. With deliberate slowness, his hands slid down the sides of my neck as I shivered. But his hands didn’t pause as they softly moved to my shoulders and then stopped. But the entire time, he didn’t even look away, his blue orbs locked in my brown ones. Finally, I broke the contact and continued to wipe away the blood and started to wrap his wound with a gauze.
“Tell me, why did you do this?” I asked him again.
“Something bad happened in the office.” He muttered angrily.
“So? Why do you’ve to hurt yourself?”
“I couldn’t control my temper. I need to release it before I snap at everyone, especially you.” He shrugged his shoulders. My heart did a flip as soon as the words left his mouth. Does he care for me?
Suddenly we heard familiar loud voices coming from the foyer. We glanced at each other confused. With a last glance at me, he left the washroom as I started arranging everything back to place. I heard a familiar voice, yelling at Logan.
“What the hell did you do to her?” I heard her asking Logan in a furious tone.
“You better low down your voice. I don’t care your Patrick’s girlfriend. I’ll throw you out of my house.” Logan growled. As I entered the living room, I noticed Scarlet and Patrick looking at Logan angrily and latter anxiously. As soon as Scarlet saw me, she relaxed and paced towards me to envelop me in a tight hug.
“Are you okay?” she asked me releasing her grip around me. I nodded although I didn’t quite get why she asked me that.
Patrick took Logan out to discuss some business kinds of stuff. Scarlet decided to stay for a while as she told me about how Patrick gifted her with a necklace that she was wearing today.
“Are you working today at the cafe?” Scarlet asked.
“Yeah” I whined, thinking of that manager or should I say owner - Drake.
“I’m not working there anymore,” Scarlet said and I frowned.
“You’re aware that he looks at every girl with a lust in his eyes right?” She asked and I nodded, shuddering at the thought. Drake is a man whore and it’s uncomfortable when we’ve got a pair of eyes watching our every moment with lust in their eyes.
“He even tried to seduce me, but Patrick dealt with him,” she said.
“What did Patrick do?” I asked curiously.
“Nothing much. Just broke his nose and few ribs” she smiled making me widen my eyes. Just broke his nose and few ribs!
“Hmm, guess he learned his lesson.”
“I think you should also leave the job. If he does something to you, which he might do if you continue to work there, then he won’t see the daylights next day” she smiled knowingly.
“How?” I asked confused.
“Logan will kill him, as simple as that”
“Ha, as if” I rolled my eyes. “Let’s see. The job pays a good amount and I’m in need of some money right now” I said. She placed a hand on my shoulder and squeezed it.
“You know, I’m always there to help you right?” She asked, her eyes glistening with emotion.
“You’re late” Drake scowled at me.
“Sorry,” I said shamefully. I didn’t realize time flew away so fast as I got engaged in a serious conversation with Scarlet. By the time I read the clock, it was 5 pm, which means I was 1 hour late. I went to the back of the kitchen and put my apron over my head. I then took a small book and a pen and walked to a table of 5 with a forced smile on my face.
It’s currently 10 pm and I’m really tired. Today we had a steady stream of customers coming in and my feet hurt like hell. I literally was running from one customer to the other to take their orders. When I first joined this cafe, there were 10 staffs overall, but now there is hardly 6 staffs including me. Guess it’s because of his behavior. Trying to flirt with women and trying to get them on the bed.
The bell rang as someone opened the door of the cafe. I was currently sitting on a stool in the kitchen, tired out of my mind. Isabella, another staff was doing the dishes. There are only two more other staffs excluding me and Isabella at this time and it seems they both were busy taking orders from the customers. I let out a sigh and stood up, straightening my skirt before walking out of the kitchen.
But I halted in my step as soon as I saw Logan sitting in a table of two. He was scrolling something in his phone with a frown on his face. I took a deep breath and walked to him with a smile.
“Hello, what would you like to drink?” I asked him as I clicked my pen. He snapped his head up and stared at me.
“A glass of water,” he said after a moment of silence and I raised a brow at him. I’m sure there’s plenty of bottles of water in his car. I’ve seen it myself. Then why does he has to come to this cafe just to drink a glass of water?
“Anything else?” I asked him and he shook his head in reply.
“You’re working late tonight,” he said as I took down his order.
“Yeah, the manager asked me to stay for a while,” I said and he nodded his head. I know I don’t need to explain to him, but he’s giving me a roof to stay in for free, least I could do is tell him about my whereabouts. I brought a glass of water and then later he orders a cup of coffee. Something tells me the reason for his arrival here is to check up on me and my heart did a flip at that thought. Maybe he cares!
It was 11 pm and all the staff had left. Logan said he’ll be waiting for me in his car and left 15 minutes ago. Even though I protested a lot, he insisted that it’s not safe for me to take a cab at this hour of the night. The manager had asked me to stay little longer to help him close the cafe and I couldn’t bring myself to say no to him.
“So, how old are you?” Drake asked me, as I cleaned the dishes. Drake was standing near the threshold, watching me with his hawk eyes. It was really uncomfortable but I didn’t dare to raise my opinion about that.
“I’m 18” I replied back. I think I hear him say ‘fresh piece’, but I shrugged it away. Maybe I’m just imagining things.
“Do you have a boyfriend?” he asked out of blue.
“Oh, that’s great! Could you pass me that towel?” he stood behind me, so close that I could feel his breath on the back of my neck.
“S-Sure” I tried to step away from him, but he snaked an arm around my waist and pulled me closer to his chest.
“You smell so good,” he said inhaling my scent. My heart started to beat loudly and anger started boiling in my veins. How dare he touch me! He turned me around and smirked at me.
“Let go off me“ I tried to push him away which made him press me harder against his chest.
“I won’t get a fresh piece like you anymore, so keep your mouth shut, ” he said and pushed me to a wall.
