Romance / Thriller

Looking out of the car window, I’m blessed with a wonderful view of snow covered trees and pathways. People warming themselves with heavy sweaters and jackets, kids trying to make snowmen and hitting each other with snowballs.

Turning the heater a notch higher, I rubbed my freezing hands together and let out a sigh and relish in the beautiful scenery and feeling the winter emits out. I absolutely love winter. Being inside the house, slumped on the couch wearing thick sweaters, and a hot steaming coffee nearby with a really good book in your hand to read. There is nothing better to ask than that. That’s how I spend most of my winter days.

But this time a man named LOGAN FREAKING WATSON decided to change my routine. I glare at him with all of my irritation I could muster up. He gives me an ‘oh so innocent look’ as if he didn’t just drag me out of my peaceful sleep which I managed to get after all the hours trying to get him to sleep.

After he proposed to me, Logan decided he would sleep with me in my apartment rather than sleeping alone in his house only with a bunch of pillows to accompany him. Not my words.

On our way back we called Grecia letting her know about our current relationship status. We didn’t want to hide this from her. I was beyond nervous when Logan talked about us to Grecia through the speakerphone. But her reply wasn’t the one I expected.

“I was waiting for this to happen.”

She said she was sure we would end up together but didn’t know it would take this long. She said she was happy for us and was waiting to see us soon but for now she asked us to enjoy our lonely time together in each other’s warmth. If you know what I mean.

I was beyond embarrassed and was blushing hard when she said that but Logan being the best son, he took her words very seriously. The whole night Logan couldn’t keep his hands to himself. He kept hugging and kissing me whenever he got the chance and I had to pry myself away from him even to use the washroom.

I was beyond exhausted and while I was trying to get some sleep, he wouldn’t stop roaming his hands all over my body trying to distract me. He was being really horny tonight and it was getting on my nerves. He knows I’m not ready to complete our bond physically and he promised me he won’t try to make a move without my consent, but he said he could touch and hold me whenever he wants and me being in a fantasy world at that time, allowed him for it. Which is why ladies and gentlemen, I’m suffering right now and he’s enjoying it to the extreme. I finally got him to stop by threatening to kick him out of the room to spend the rest of the night on the couch. It was only around 2 am that we fell asleep in each other’s arms.

At 6 in the morning, he practically dragged my ass out of the bed saying he had a surprise for me and told me to be ready in 20 minutes. I am beginning to think that there is something really wrong with this guy. I mean who would want to give a surprise in this cold freaking morning. It’s official my dear friends.

Logan has gone crazy!

All through the ride, Logan kept trying to lift my mood by talking about random stuff. I was getting really annoyed because he wouldn’t even tell me where he was taking me to. After some time I just stopped asking and sat there silently, staring out of the window with a permanent scowl on my face.

“Babe?” he called me in a soft and innocent tone. I didn’t even turn to look at him. He sighed and turned his body towards me. We were in the signal and the red light was on to our way.

“Babeeee” I turned ever so slightly to look at him with an annoyed face. His lips were slightly puckered and I couldn’t help but find it cute. I kept a straight face trying to not give in to him.

“Oh, come on. You don’t have to put up a face for this. You don’t even know what all is waiting for you out there. It’s going to be fun, Lia. I promise.” He says with an excited tone.

“We could have just stayed at the house and watched some movies. Why do you want to go out in this cold?” I asked with a grunt.

“But my surprises aren’t over yet. There are so many things I have planned or you. Yesterday was just a glimpse for that. And I wanted to make up for all those times when I was an ass to you. And it’s not my fault that you happen to hate winter mornings.” Logan defended.

“I never said I hate winter mornings. It’s just I’m not really a fan of going out during this time. All I wanted was to stay in bed all warmed up.” I said.

“Is that what you want sweetheart? You want to be warmed up? All you had to do was ask babe. I can make you all hot and bothered if you want?” he said with a seductive smirk. His eyes were getting dark at this moment.

“I-I didn’t mean it that way. I was just….. I-I…” I stopped my stuttering the moment I felt his hands on my cheek. His hands are so warm that I feel like to just bury myself in him. Okay, that came out wrong! I blushed furiously at that thought. Logan’s eyes held so much power and intensity that I couldn’t just look away. I felt like being captivated by those clear ocean blue eyes.

I snapped out of the little daze and focused on the road ahead. We didn’t even notice the light go green. Logan let out some series of curses before shooting the car forward.

“Ice skating.” I turned to look at him when we approached the building. He brought me to ice skating, and not just any ice skating rink, the Rockefeller one. I always wanted to come here but never got any chance. I turned to Logan with a wide smile stretched on my face.

“Yeps,” he said, grinning. I threw my hands around his neck and buried my face in his neck, surprising him as he took a step back to catch the balance.

“Thank you. Thank you. I always wanted to come here.” I mumbled in his skin and he stiffened. He wrapped his hands around my waist and hugged me back.

“Thank god. I thought you wouldn’t approve it for a second there. And you don’t have to worry if you don’t know skating. I can be your teacher for this. I’ll catch you if you fall on your butt.” He said with so much confidence. Ha…this guy is so full of himself.

“Let’s see.” I pulled away from him and gave a smirk at him before walking towards the booth to get the skates.

“2 for ice skating,” I said to the man sitting in the booth.

“That will be $60.” He said. I was about to reach for my purse when I remembered that I didn’t carry one.

“Here,” Logan said handing him the money. “Wouldn’t want my girlfriend to pay when I’m here.” He said with a wink. I rolled my eyes at him even though I had a slight blush on my face after hearing him calling me his girlfriend. I still couldn’t fathom the fact that I’m his and he’s mine now.

The man gave us the skates of our sizes. We headed towards one of the benches to put on our skates. After I was done I looked up to see a smirking Logan holding his hand out for me. Ohhh, he still has no idea. I inhaled a sharp breath before walking past him, seeing his face drop made me stifle a laugh. Ha…You didn’t expect that.

I stepped on the ice and let myself go. I moved across the ice gracefully and effortlessly feeling the cold breeze against my face. Skating was one of the things I had learned from my dad. He used to take me to skate whenever we had the chance and trained me to lose myself on the ice. I was pretty much like a pro at it. I thought I would struggle in the beginning when I stopped because it’s been a hell of a long time since I did this but thankfully I still knew how to control my body and got the knack again. I did a little spin before sliding again. I looked to my side to find Logan but he was nowhere, making me frown. I glanced at the entrance and there he was. With his mouth hanging open and a disbelief look on his face. I skated towards him and stopped waving my hands to get his attention.

“You liar. I thought you didn’t know how to skate?” he asked with an incredulous look.

“Hey, don’t call me that. You didn’t ask me whether I knew to skate or not. It’s not my fault that your egotistical ass decided to believe that I didn’t know skating.” I smirked. Logan sighed shaking his head thinking about something.

“There goes my plan on making me look like a sweet charming boyfriend teaching his girl how to skate and catching her when she looks like she is about to fall on her back.” I laughed at him shaking my head at his cuteness.

“Aww, how sweet of you. But better luck next time, huh.” I said, winking and started moving to the middle of the rink but this time with Logan following close behind me.

I should say though. Logan is also really good at skating. He even knew some special spins that he offered to teach me just to satisfy his failed expectations. We skated for a long time until our hands became numb and freezing. We decided to get out when we were not able to feel our own faces.

Once in the car, Logan started the engine and put the heater at high. I was literally shivering and was desperate for the need of warmth. The car soon became warm but it wasn’t enough for me. I wanted a certain kind of warm. Logan’s warmth. I looked over at him and noticed him already looking at me with lust. As on cue, Logan stretched his hand to grab me and soon I found myself seated on top of him on his lap. Don’t ask me how the freak did I even end up there? I really have no idea.

I stared at Logan and saw his face had changed, his eyes looking darker in the dim light. In a flash, his lips found mine in a rough kiss which made me hold on to him more tightly. He pulled me closer to him by the waist and started to slide his hands towards my hair. He tangled his hand in my hair slightly tilting my head to give him more access. This was the first time that we kissed like this, with so much intensity. Logan didn’t care about hiding his lust and urgency and it was all too new for me. By the time we parted, I was gasping for air. I opened my eyes to see Logan resting his forehead against mine while breathing hard. His hands had a tight grip on my waist and that was the moment I realized our position. We were too close. Logan opened his eyes and I was able to tell he was holding himself back.

“Hot chocolate?” he asked with a breathless tone. I nodded my head immediately after hearing it. I slowly pulled myself away from him and sat back on the passenger seat. After what happened I think I really need some caffeine in my system to think properly.

We fell into a peaceful silence as Logan drove off to nearby café. Logan got out of the car once he parked the car at the side of a café. I looked at his figure disappearing inside the café and thought about what all happened in the past two days. I looked down at the ring in my finger and a smile made its way on to my lips. I looked through the glass walls of the café for the man who stole my heart and was able to see him talking to the elderly lady at the counter. If you say I’ll find the love of my life six months back, I would’ve laughed at your face and call you crazy.

I watched him secretly and soon realized that I was kind of being stalkerish. I was about to put on the radio when I noticed a dark golden color envelope on the dashboard of the driver’s seat. I quickly picked it up and realized that it was some invitation card. An invitation card?

As they say, curiosity killed a cat, I opened it to my curiosity and thanked the god that it wasn’t sealed. I hope Logan doesn’t mind me going through this. Or will he? I pulled out the card from inside and read through the lines.

I immediately understood that it was an invitation for a ball, and not just any ball, a masquerade ball. Woww! I have never been to it before and I have always dreamt of going to one. I read the invitation and came to know that the ball is held the day after tomorrow by a man named Marshall Adams for his achievement at some business. I was beyond excited when I read that they can come with their partner. Why didn’t Logan tell me about this? Maybe he was going to ask me as a surprise. This man is full of surprises.

Just as I placed the envelope back I saw Logan coming out of the café holding two cups of steaming hot chocolate. He asked me to roll down the window and passed me the drink. My mouth watered at the smell of chocolate.

Logan got on his seat and settled before turning to watch me drink the heavenly tasting liquid, a small smile grazing on his lips.

“Stop staring. It’s creepy.” I laughed nervously. He shook his head and let out a chuckle. As I couldn’t keep it in me anymore I decided to ask him about it.

“Looks like you have a ball to attend?” I asked him.

“Were you planning on making this a surprise for me as well?” I asked with a smile on my lips. I noticed that his face had become silent for a moment. He exhaled slowly and looked at me with a serious expression.

“I was never planning on asking you, Lia,” he said with a straight face. His reply left me totally flabbergasted. Don’t tell me he’s serious.

“Why? It’s written that you can come with your date. Then why can’t you take me?” I asked with an expectant look.

“You can’t come.” He said with a straight tone. I started to get angry at that answer.

“And why is that?”

“Because there is going to be a certain someone that I think you shouldn’t want to meet.” He snapped at me.

“Who might that be huh?” I asked not caring that my voice was raising.

“Olivier.” He said looking dead straight. I became silent. I didn’t know what to say. His name itself makes my heart race in fear. Facing him again is the last thing I want. But then if I go what if I can get to know something? What if I can find out something about my parents died from Olivier?

“Logan, I want to come,” I said with a determined tone.

“No,” he said. .

“Just think about this. What if I can manage to find something from there? Something that might give away about my parent’s death. And-”

“That’s enough. You have no idea how powerful he is Lia. I don’t want you to get into this. I’ll take care of this myself.”

“No. I want to be there. I-“

“Why can’t you just listen to me for once? I’m trying to keep you out of danger, Lia. You’re are not going to come and if you try, I won’t bother locking you up inside your room.” He said and faced front, fastening his seat-belt and starting the car as if that was the end of the discussion.

Something tells me that Logan isn’t going to budge from his decision and he might actually lock me up if I try to go. But I can’t just leave this opportunity. I guess this is the only chance I’ll get if I want to know anything about my parent’s death. So I can’t just let it slip away just because he thinks I’m in danger. But that is the truth. I know that I’m playing with fire, I just have to know how to control the fire.

Easier said than done.

I woke up to my phone ringing beside me. I answered it without looking at the name and held it to my ear.

“Hello?” I answered sleepily.

“Don’t tell me you haven’t woken up yet!” I heard Scarlet gasp from the other side.

“Good morning to you too Scar,” I mumbled sarcastically, rolling over my bed to glance at my clock. It only was half past ten.

“Karrie! Get your ass off your bed and better be ready in an hour. We are going shopping.” She said, excitedly.

“Why do you want to go now? Why can’t we go in the evening? I want to sleeeeeep.” I said drifting off.

“Karrie!! You better be ready when I reach or else I’ll surely kick your lazy ass. Now get up!” She hung up with that. I groaned as I reluctantly got off my bed. Oh, how I wish I could kill my best friend now!

I did my morning routine and wore ripped black jeans with a simple white crop top along with a converse. I didn’t feel like wearing any makeup so I decided to leave my face plain. Hell… I didn’t even feel like to go shopping if it wasn’t for Scarlett’s annoying and demanding self.

After what happened yesterday I just want to stay in my bed sulking. When I and Logan came home yesterday I went straight to my room and locked the door not wanting to see him. I spent an hour just sitting there and wandering around my room not wanting to get out and face his wrath. I knew he was pissed but I was pissed as well. After some time I noticed there was no movement from outside, so I opened the door to find out that Logan had left. That was the last time I saw him and I didn’t even receive a text from him since that. It’s quite funny if you see. It has only been two days since we confessed to each other our feelings and thought that everything was falling into place and now both of us are angry and didn’t want to see each other.

I locked the front door of my apartment before heading down to the street where Scarlett was waiting for me in her Porsche. I spotted her car and entered in before tugging in my seat-belt. We exchanged our morning greetings which included fist bump and side hug. I noticed that she was driving us to the nearest boutique.

“So...?” I started as Scarlett just hummed in response.

“Why are we going to a boutique?” I asked, not able to contain it anymore.

“I thought you knew.” She said as I raised my brow.

“What do you mean?” I asked her.

“Didn’t Logan tell you?” She asked making me even more confused.

“Tell me what?” I asked puzzled.

“Huh... There is this success meet being held in the town hall the day after by a billionaire from New York. It’s more like a masquerade ball. And the guests can come with their date it seems. Patrick and Logan are invited and Pat had asked me to come with him. I thought you were coming with Logan.” She said.

“Oh…” was all I said and fell silent.

“What? Didn’t Logan tell you about this?”

“He did. But he isn’t going with me.” I said.

“What? You are kidding right?” She said while parking the car in the lot.

“No,” I said honestly.

“The hell! Why isn’t he taking you for the ball? Wait, does that mean he’s taking someone else in place of you?” I shrugged my shoulders not knowing how to answer that question. I myself don’t know whom he’s planning to ask to accompany him.

“The nerve of that guy! I’m surely going to kick his balls and make him su-“

“Scarlet. Calm down.” I cut her off. I sighed as I looked around to see people giving us weird stares. We probably look like two crazy girls and also the fact that window was rolled down wasn’t helping either.

“Scarlet. Do you think I’m not pissed at this either? I tried my best to convince him... but he has his reasons which I can’t oppose.” I said with my head low.

“Reasons? What kinda reason will approve him to take another lady to a ball instead of you?” She asked, her voice raising slightly. Guess I’m not only the one who’s pissed at him.

“Aa—aah ... that....” I stammered at realizing what I had just said. Scarlet doesn’t know anything about what’s been happening to me since the past month. The strange followers...Oliver... death threats... She has no idea about them. I wasn’t planning on telling her about it since I know she would freak out and get worried. But I can’t keep it from her any longer. I want to-

“Karrie!” She cut my thoughts off.

“Huh??” I asked unconsciously.

“Were you even listening? Why isn’t Logan taking you for the ball?” She asked impatiently.

“Aah... Scarlet... there’s something that I have to tell you....” I started to open up everything that had happened the past month. She had her palm over her mouth when I had finished. She was utterly shocked to hear me, which I had expected. She just pulled me into a tight hug as I felt her sob on my shoulder. I rubbed her back in a comforting manner.

“Karrie... I’m so sorry that you had to go through that. I swear I had no clue about any of this. I’m sorry that I wasn’t there for you. I’m not a good friend. Why the hell didn’t you tell me about this? “

“Shhh... It’s okay Scarlet. I just didn’t want you to worry.” I pulled away and rubbed her tears that had fallen on her cheeks. She hung her head low.

“Hey, I’m okay now. See. This is why I didn’t tell you anything. I knew that you would bawl your eyes out for this and feel sorry when you’re not at all responsible for what happened. Now come on, wipe your face and let’s go hunt a dress that’s going to have your Patty boy swooning around you.” She laughed at that and wiped her face.

“But you still haven’t answered me.” She said, walking by my side.

“What is the reason why Logan isn’t taking you to the masquerade ball?”

“Oh that. That’s because Oliver is also going to be there. So Logan doesn’t want him to see me. He says that I’d be safe at home rather than in the presence of Olivier.” I said sighing.

“Oh... I guess he’s right. You must stay away from Olivier as much as possible.” she said as we entered the boutique.

“Not you too! You don’t get it Scar! I want to go not just because of Logan. The real reason is that I want to see Oliver. I know I might sound crazy... but this is the only way I can dig a little deeper. He is the reason for my parent’s death. I want to find out more about him and this is the only way out!” I said.

“Actually... you’re right. And you-“

“Hello, ladies!” She was cut off by a cheerful voice. We turned around to see Tyler. What is he doing here? I thought this was a women’s boutique.

“Tyler” Scarlet and I said in unison. We hugged him and kissed his cheek, making him go red.

“How are you, bro?” Scarlett asked.

“I’m grand!”

“But what are you doing here?” I asked confused.

“Oh… I’m just here to pick my suit that mom had bought for some ball held the day after.”

“Wait, you mean the masquerade ball hosted by Mr. Adams?” Scarlett asked a bit bewildered.

“Exactly.” Tyler said with a small smile.

“What? You’re also going?” I asked him and he nodded his head.

“Yes. And what do you mean ‘I’m also going?’” he asked confused. Scarlet smacked behind his head, making him pout as he rubbed his head.

“That means we’ll see each other at the ball. Patrick and Logan are also invited.” Scarlet said.

“Oh. I forgot they were f***ing billionaires” he said as realization dawn on him.

“Hey, so what about you? You’re also invited, which mean you’re also from a high-class family.” I said as I recollected the words from the invitation card. The man who held the ball was one of the top billionaires of the world. And I’m sure he won’t call middle-class people to his party.

“My family is rich and I was born into it.” Tyler defended and Scarlet and I looked at each other before rolling our eyes in unison. Suddenly an idea popped into my head.

“Whom are you going with?” I asked.

“I’m going with Finn.” He said proudly.

“Tyler..umm... would you mind if I tag along?!” I asked hoping that he would agree.

“Umm... Sure… why not.” He said with a smile.

“But what about your boyfriend? I thought you might be going with him.” He said.

“Oh, that’s a long story. We had a fight and his stubborn ass decided not to take me to the ball.” I said, careful with my words. I don’t want to repeat the same mistake by spilling out the whole truth. Tyler has no clue what had happened in my life and I think it’s better that way. He thinks that my parents are on a business trip. But I’ll tell him one day though. That’s not now!

“So. You’re sure you’ve no problem in that?” I asked him again, just to make sure he has no second thoughts.

“Oh stop being so mannered Karrie. I don’t mind at all. In fact, I’m looking up to make your boyfriend jealous. He is just so hot when he gets angry you know.” He said giving me a wink as I hit his shoulder playfully.

Tyler had left shortly after. Scarlet had chosen her dress pretty fast and I have been looking for a dress since the past. Scarlet is making me try every piece of cloth she likes. And when I tell ‘she likes’, that includes tons! I’m very much exhausted to the point that I want to rip off the clothes around me.

“This one!” Scarlett popped in front of me with another gown.

“Not again Scarlet!” I growled at her.

“This is the last one I swear.” She said.

“You have been telling the same for the past half an hour!” I complained.

“I won’t tell again. This is the final one. Now go try it on.” She said, rushing me into the trial room.

I stripped my clothes off for the millionth time today and wore the one Scarlet had handed me. I looked at my reflection on the mirror and was pretty much surprised to that it looked perfect on me. It was an off-shoulder burgundy taffeta dress with beading on the waist and at the bottom. There was also a slit on the right side of the dress which shows up to my thighs. It wasn’t too tight but at the same time it defined my curves well and made me look pretty. I don’t know whether I’m saying so because I’m more than exhausted to try anything more and just want to go home and sleep.

I walked out of the room and presented myself to Scarlet in a dramatic way with my one hand raised upwards and another one on my hips. She ignored my act and gasped loudly.

“This is the one!” Those words were the ones I’ve been longing to hear since forever.

“Aaah Finally!!” I sighed in relief, before rushing back to change.

We paid for our dresses before heading home. It’s time to bring the badass girl inside me. For that, we have got a lot of planning to do.

One thing I’m pretty sure. Tomorrow is going to be a long night.
