Down memory lane
"The only thing worse than not knowing a secret, is discovering one...”
The ride was completely silent. I stared out of the window, watching the buildings and trees pass by. We both were lost in our own thoughts. I don’t know where he was taking me, but it was out of the town. We’ve been driving for a while now and Logan still hasn’t spoken a word to me. Now and then, his jaw would clench slightly.
He pulled off the main road into one of the small side streets that’s filled with houses that were decent sized.
“Why are we here? At the coast?” I asked staring at him, confused.
“Just wait and see.” he said, still looking straight at the road. I humph and look back out the window in silence. After two kilometers down the road, he slowed down and stopped the car in front of a half constructed building.
I frown and look around the place. Seriously? If he wants to talk, why can’t we go to a park or something? Why here?
He unbuckles his seat belt and gets out of the car, walking in my direction. Before he could open the door for me, I quickly unbuckled my seat belt and jump out of the car. He stood there, staring at me with an amused expression before he shook his head, muttering something along with the line ‘special character’.
“Why are we here, Logan?” I asked him, irritated to the fact that he’s not giving me any clue.
“You’ll see.” he said and I rolled my eyes at him. I hate surprises!
I take time to get a good look of the place. I can tell it’s a two storey house. Its ground floor was fully constructed and the first floor was half way done. There was a two tier Boca Hexagon Fountain without water in front of the house.
“Whose house is this?” I asked, looking around. He was silent for a moment before answering.
“Its mine.” he said and I looked back at him, frowning.
“I don’t get it.” I said.
“Come with me.” he said and takes my hand in his. The sensation of his skin against mine is enough for my heart to beat loudly against my chest and a shiver ran down my spine.
Why the hell does he have this effect on me? I’ve never experienced this kind of feeling when I’m with other boys. But don’t get me wrong, I have only been with two boys in my life excluding Logan.
He guides me along the side path of the house to the backyard. I gasp loudly as I looked at what was in front of me. The property is on the edge of a U- shaped cliff and the sea was below it.
“It’s so beautiful.” I breathed out. Subconsciously I grabbed his hand and squeezed it lightly.
“Come.” he said and pulled me after him to the side of the cliff where there was a flight of stairs, going down towards the ocean. We walk down the stairs and soon we were walking on the sand near the ocean. I shivered as a cold breeze brushed against my exposed skin and I couldn’t help but regret the fact that I was only wearing a white bardot top and a black knee length skirt. But then again, I didn’t know we were going to the beach.
“No, I’m fine.” I said but he didn’t listen and slipped off his black leather jacket and wrapped it around my shoulders before I could even stop him. He was wearing a white shirt and black pants and his hair was messily styled which made him look more handsome than he was. I dig my fingers into my palm to prevent myself from running a hand through his smooth hair. We sat down on the sand and stared at the sea in silence for what seem liked hours.
“I bought this property 3 years back and constructed this house . I wanted to give this house as a gift to mom on her 45th birthday. But I couldn’t.” Logan said finally breaking the silence. I looked at him and noticed him clenching his jaw and staring at the sea, lost in his own thoughts.
“Why?” I asked softly.
“Because I lost this property in a game.” he said and stared at me and I stared back at him in confusion.
“In a game? What kind of game?” I asked curiously.
“Poker, actually. I lost the game, so I didn’t have any choice but sell the property.” he said, closing his eyes tightly. For me poker was just a friendly game of exchanging marbles whenever someone won but I knew that there was so much more at stake for people like Logan.
“Why did you play that game?”
“Because I was in a fucking debt, Lia. I needed money and that was my only option.” He said.
“I had some illegal side business and the government appointed some secret agents to investigate about my business, as they got a clue from one of my worker. But they couldn’t find anything as I shifted the items to another place beforehand with one of my trusted worker, Treydon. But it turned out to be that Treydon wasn’t that trustworthy as he sold the items to another person at double charge without my knowledge. I couldn’t find him as he ran away and I was in a huge debt. I was not able to pay my company staffs.” He said and I tried to take in everything he said.
“You’re rich. Then why did you start doing illegal business?” I asked curiously. He let out a loud laugh like that was the stupidest question in the world.
“Dad died when I was 13 years old and I couldn’t take up the company as I wasn’t an adult. The company was then in the hands of mom’s brother who already had a business to take care of. But seeing my mom’s helpless state, he told he will look after the company till I turn 17. So when I turned 17, he gave back the company to me. And it was me who made this company powerful as you see today and I was able to do that because of this side business. I also bought this property after that.”
“What kind of illegal business was that?”
“Export and import of drugs.” he said and sighed heavily.
“After Treydon ran away, I stopped the drug business. I knew if I restart it again, I will lose my only family, mom. So I went asking for help to other multinational company owners. It was through that way I met Mr. Collins, Natasha’s dad. He offered me help and in turn I was asked to date his daughter. I was confused at the first but eventually I realized that Natasha had a crush on me and wanted to date me. She was the one who persuaded her dad in helping me. And so, I did.”
“I also started doing street fights to save some money. But it wasn’t enough to repay the debt. It was Patrick who told me about Poker. At first I started playing with small amount and I was able to repay the debt. I was overconfident as I was able to win every game, so I played for a huge amount. But luck wasn’t with me all the time. I lost the game once which made me to sell this property.” He said and looked back at the sea.
“Did Grecia know about this property?”
“Yes, she knew I bought this property. But she didn’t know I was constructing a house for her here. She even didn’t know I was selling drugs. She knew I had some side business and once asked me about it. But I lied to her. I told her I was selling medicines instead of drugs. Poor mom believed it and I was guilty about it. But I didn’t have the confidence to tell her the truth. I knew she will break down. Even when I was in debt, she didn’t ask me anything, instead she helped me to repay it. She said she trusted me. Once she found out I was doing street fighting, she got scared and made me promise to not do it again. But I broke her promise and started doing it. But this time it wasn’t for money, it was for my self-satisfaction. Though all my problems were solved, my past life always haunted me no matter how much ever I’ve tried to move on. This might sound weird but I’ve had nightmares too. I wanted to take my anger out on someone rather than a punching bag. Therefore I was left with no choice.” He said and shoved his head in his hands. This is the first time I have seen him this vulnerable and my chest tightened seeing him in this condition.
I moved closer to him and removed his hands from his face. He looked at me with red eyes. I immediately wrapped my hands around his neck and pulled him into a hug. He hugged me back and held onto me tightly, crying softly on my shoulder. I couldn’t help but cry with him as I didn’t know how to comfort him.
We pulled back after a long time and I wiped his tears away with my thumb and he did the same to me.
“Thank you for opening up to me.” I said and kissed his forehead.
“Thank you for listening to me patiently and for not hating me.” he said and pecked my lips. I blushed red. Logan throws his head back and laughs, his eyes lighting up.
“Logan, then what about the house? How did you get it back?” I asked and his face turned serious.
“I bought this property back last month with my savings.” He said and I smiled.
I then realised our position and a hard blush coats my cheeks. I didn’t know how but I ended up sitting on his lap. My legs wrapped around his torso and his hands were settled on my waist. I tried to move away, but this only made him to pull me closer, if that was even possible.
“Logan, leave me.” I giggled and tried to remove his hands from my waist, but he only tightened it.
“No, stay. I like this position.” he said and I can feel the blush deepen on my cheeks. I don’t reply and instead nibble on my bottom lip embarrassed.
There’s no use fighting with him. He’s stronger than me! I’m sure I now resemble a tomato.
“Then why were you angry at me?” I asked and he stared at me, debating whether to say or not.
“Your dad was the part of the secret agency that the government appointed to know the details about my side business. But he couldn’t find anything and he was terminated from his job as he failed in it. So when I came to know that you were his daughter, I thought you came to take revenge and expose my identity.” He said and my breath hitched in my throat.
“Dad was a secret agent? I didn’t know about it Logan.” I said and he smiled which confused me more.
“I know you didn’t know. The day when you came to my office only I found you wasn’t a part of it. And I was guilty about accusing you as a traitor but my pride didn’t let me say sorry to you until now. I’m sorry for snapping at you.” he said genuinely and this time I pecked him on his lips.
“You’re forgiven, Logan Watson” I said and his eyes sparkled.
“Really?” he asked and he looked so cute right now.
“Mhm.” I hummed and kissed his cheeks, running my hand through his hair.
“Someone can’t keep their hands to themselves.” he teased and I blushed, but didn’t make any effort to remove my hand from his hair. Instead I buried my head in the crook of his neck and inhaled his scent. He wrapped his arms around me. Since when did I get so comfortable around him?
“Now tell me your story.” he asked and I pulled away to look up at him, confused.
“You lied to us, didn’t you?” he asked and I froze.
“Your parents death wasn’t a car accident, right?” he asked and I shook my head, unable to say anything.
“They were shot.” he said more like a statement. I stopped breathing.
“H-How do you know?” I asked.
“Well…” he said and looked around, not meeting my gaze.
“Well, what?” I asked, my voice slightly breaking.
“You won’t like my answer.”
“Say it.” I said, getting bit frustrated.
“Well, I kind of blackmailed Scarlett into telling me.” he said guiltily. I gasped and slapped his chest.
“Why did you do that?”
“Hey, it’s not my mistake that the words slipped out from her mouth” he defended himself.
“Say it clearly, dumbass.” I said and slapped his chest again, harder.
“Ouch, that hurts.” he whined and grabs my wrist, stopping me.
“You better say what you did before I rip your head off.” I threatened him.
“Feisty. I like it.” He teased and I gave him my best murderous look.
“Okay I’ll say. Yesterday morning I saw Scarlet in Starbucks. She was angry and started yelling at me for shouting Patrick and shutting him out. She also said that he’s grumpy now. And also that I was a dick to treat you like you’re invisible, etcetera. Who the hell was she to yell at me? I got really angry and started to snap at her. Thank god she was a girl or else I would’ve broke her nose right there and then.” he chuckled and I rolled my eyes finding no humour in it.
“Then she said something about your parents being murdered. So I understood you were hiding something from us and I blackmailed her to know the truth. She only said your parents was murdered and told me to ask you the rest.” He said and I took a deep breath.
“About what did you blackmail her?”
“That I will take away her dads job if she didn’t say the truth.” he said smiling in triumph and I groaned.
“Of course you’ll do something like that.” I said, rolling my eyes.
“So, Miss Kingston, what’s your real story?” I closed my eyes and took a deep breath. I untangled myself from him and got up. I turned towards the sea, my back facing him.
“Yes, I lied. My parents didn’t die in a car accident. They were shot in front of me and I saw it with my eyes.” I said and closed my eyes, controlling my breathing level. I found myself struggling to breathe, my throat tightening. A hand was placed on my lower back and Logan gently turned me around, his eyes full of worry and confusion.
“Lia, you don’t need to say me if you’re not ready for it. It’s fine” he said.
“No. You need to know. I’m tired of hiding this from everyone.” I said and a tear rolled down my cheeks. I wiped it away harshly.
“There were two people and I don’t know who they are. But one day they suddenly appeared in my house and killed my parents, right in front of my eyes. Mom and Dad were everything to me, Logan. But they killed them mercilessly without a reason.” I said and closed my eyes tightly, fighting back the tears.
“What happened then?” he asked emotionless. My heart was beating so fast against my body. I inhaled and looked at Logan. I need to tell him. It was making me go crazy. I need to tell him the real reason of my nightmares. I need someone to help me come over it. And Logan is the right person.
“After they shot my parents, I was injected on my neck. W-When I opened my eyes, I was in a dark room, tied up to a chair. It was a b-basement of some building. I was locked up there for a-almost five days. First day no one came to check up on me and I-I was starving. Next day that m-man who killed my parents came. I couldn’t figure out his face as it was dark. But I understood it was him by his voice, which was so deep and scary. And also he had a.. tattoo of lion head on his hand and his eyes were b-bright green. Everything about him frightened me.”
“I was given only a loaf of bread and water to eat. Then that man started to ab-abuse me physically. Beating me with his belt and kicking me on my stomach repeatedly until I spit blood. Then h-he started to t-touch my body, teasing me and humiliating me. Once he came drunk and removed the rope around me and took me to a room. W-When he was about to rape me, someone pulled him off and took h-him away from that room. I used that chance to escape. Thankfully no one was there outside and I was able to escape without being caught.” I said and I finally let the tears slide down my cheeks.
My hands were shaking uncontrollably. Logan was watching me carefully. His eyes were completely emotionless, but his jaw was clenched tightly in anger. His hands were tight fists by his side and he appeared to be rooted to the spot.
“After I escaped from there, I stayed with my mom’s friend. Her husband was a police officer and he told me it was difficult to find the kidnappers as I didn’t recognize their face. She told me that everyone believed I was dead and it was better if I stayed hidden for my safety. For six months I stayed in her house, locked in my room, scared to go out. Then somehow the kidnappers found out where I was staying and they tried to kill my mom’s friend. She was hospitalized for two months. Then it was her husband who told me to leave this country and go somewhere else where there is no threat and danger. That’s why I came to New York as Scarlett was here. She knew my parents were murdered but she didn’t know about my kidnapping. No one knew except me and now you.” Logan was silent the entire time with an emotionless face.
“Please say something” I urged him, fear settling inside my stomach as I couldn’t make out his expression.
“You’re so brave. Come here” he finally said and his arms outstretched and I exhaled a deep sigh of relief. I walked towards him and fell into his embrace. His warmth wrapped around me tightly, and I felt safe with him. Logan rubbed my back soothingly, his face nuzzled inside the crook of my neck.
“Why didn’t you tell me this earlier?” he asked and I felt butterflies in my stomach as his hot breath hit my neck.
“B-Because I was scared. Scared that you’ll leave me if you find out my story.” I said and he tightened his grip around me.
“But you know what? This only made my feelings grow more towards you.”
