“Sit” Logan ordered and walked to his black leather office chair. He shrugged out his black coat suit and hung it on the back of the chair. He’s wearing a crisp white shirt, a black skinny tie finished off with some tightly fitted suit trousers. He rolled his sleeves up to his elbow before making his way to the bar.
I sat down on a chair, fiddling with my fingers nervously. Logan poured himself a drink before turning around to stare at me. The intensity in them caused me to suck in a breath.
“So, Miss Kingston. What’s your next plan?” he asked in an authoritative tone.
“What do you mean?” I asked confused. He chuckled darkly and slammed the glass on the counter, the alcohol spilling out of it.
“Stop playing innocent.” He hissed. My breath hitched in my throat as he took a dangerously slow step towards me.
“L-Logan I don’t understand what you’re talking about-“He slammed his hands on either side of the armrest, cutting me short. I could feel his hot breath on my face and that made every hair stand up on the back of my neck. Goosebumps erupted all over my skin.
“All right, you want to do this in a hard way? Then fine by me” he said and grabbed my arms, lifting me up from my seat. He slammed me to the desk, caging me between him and the table. I closed my eyes as I hissed in pain.
“Look at me” he growled. No words could be used to describe how much scared I was right now under his deadly glare. I shivered as I sensed the anger radiating off his body.
“I said LOOK AT ME” he yelled at my face and I immediately opened my eyes. I looked up to meet his piercing eyes as tears started to roll down my face.
“L-Logan please y-you’re h-hurting me” I whimpered. He tightened his grip on my arms, and I yelped in pain as it became unbearable.
“You’ve hurt me more, Karolia”
“Please tell me what’s happening” I pleaded.
“I know the reason why you came to New York, Karolia. I know your dad” He said and I stopped breathing immediately. Does he know?
“H-How do you know?” I stammered. He released his grip around me and took a step back.
“Your dad had a small relationship with my company which wasn’t for good.” He said, looking straight into my eyes.
“What are you implying?” I asked and I wiped away my tears.
“You came to destroy me. Right?” he asked, hurt and anger displayed in his voice. Before I could reply, a knock interrupted us.
“What?” Logan shouted to the person behind the door, clearly annoyed in disturbing us. I looked down, getting uncomfortable by his gaze.
“S-Sir. I just need to talk to you” a feminine voice said.
“Not now, Mia,” he said, running his hand through his hair in frustration.
“But Sir, It’s important.” She said. Logan groaned and walked to the door, unlocking it. He opened the door to see Mia, with some papers clutched tightly in her hand. It seemed like she was nervous about something.
“What is it?” Logan asked, annoyed. She looked at me for a brief second, before turning to Logan.
“S-Sir, I’m s-sorry. S-She isn’t involved in it.” Mia said nervously and his shoulders tensed. He stepped out and closed the door, leaving me all alone.
I stared at the door. Logan’s haunting words echoed in my mind. He knows the reason why I came to New York. He knows that my parent’s death wasn’t just a car accident, but a murder. He knows my life was in danger in Worcester. But why? Why is he so angry at me? Was there something Dad was hiding from me?
“Your dad had a small relationship with my company which wasn’t for good.” He said, looking straight into my eyes. Please don’t tell me he did that to my parents!
“You came to destroy me. Right?” he asked, hurt and anger displayed in his voice.
Feeling dizzy and overwhelmed, I buried my hand in my face. The sound of the door being opened made me look up. Logan walked in and he looked up at me with an expression I couldn’t figure.
“Get out,” he said. A stab of pain hit my chest and I clenched my jaws. I bit my lips hard as I tried to hold in my tears. Of course, he had said those words earlier, but this time it was different. It felt as if he was saying to me to get out of his life.
I took a deep breath and took my bag. Without tearing my gaze away from him, I walked out of the room as he held the door open for me.
It was completely silent and I could feel everyone’s eyes on me, but I looked straight with an expressionless face as I kept walking. Calm down, Karrie. Only a few more steps, then it’s over.
“What are you all staring at? Get back to your work.” Logan’s voice filled the entire office and pretty soon everything around me was moving around. I walked to the elevator and pressed the button.
As I waited for the doors to open, Logan came and stood beside me. I didn’t dare to look at him and kept my eyes fixed on the doors of the elevator.
“My driver will drop you home. He’s waiting down,” he said. The doors of the elevator opened and I stepped in. I turned around and looked at him.
“I don’t need your help, Mr. Watson. I’m capable of going alone.” I said confidently before the doors of the elevator closed. I took a breath and pressed the button for the ground floor. I stepped back, leaning my head on the cold surface of the mirror.
I passed a small smile to the receptionist and walked out of the office. As he said his driver was waiting for me, but I politely denied. I walked through the pavement until I got a taxi.
“Where to, Miss?” the taxi driver asked.
“To the nearest park.”
I sat on an empty bench in the park. There were few kids running around, their mothers sitting and looking after them. I wished my mom would be here with me, to laugh with me, to scold me. There are some moments when we would be really frustrated with our parents. Every small mistake we do, they shout at us. At that time we feel that it would be better to have a life without parents and siblings. But we’ll only understand how precious our family was when they leave us forever. All our happiness will be buried down along with them. Then every single moment we spend with them, good or bad will be a memory. A memory that can’t be restored back.
I placed my head between my palms and cried. My life turned into a mess after THAT day. The day I lost all my happiness. I lost my mom and dad. I was so lost in my thoughts when my phone rang. I lifted my head up and looked at the caller ID- Logan.
I ended the call and switched off my phone. He’s the last person I want to talk with right now. I looked ahead as the tears trickled down my cheeks continuously and I didn’t make any effort to make them stop.
“Mom, I’m home,” I shouted and kicked off my shoes. The house was silent and I frowned. Where did they go? That too leaving the front door wide open? Today I went to the beach with my high school friends and we had a lot of fun. And dad promised me he would take mom and me for outing tonight. He’s a very busy person and I rarely see him. C’mon I understand he runs a company. But is there any company which works till midnight? Every day he reaches home at 11 or 12. He even doesn’t think he has a wife and a daughter.
I walked to the kitchen and it was empty. I groaned and dropped my sweater on the kitchen table. I took a glass and filled it with water. As I was about to take a sip from it, I heard a loud sound, making me drop the glass from my hand.
My heart started to beat loudly in my chest and I ran to where the sound came, which was from the basement of our house. I walked through the staircase which led to the underground. As I neared, I could hear screams, loud screams of my mom. I dashed straight into the door, opening it. There I saw my parents. I saw dad on the floor unconscious with his head bleeding. Mom was tied up, sitting on her knees, bawling her eyes out.
“Mom” I yelled. I couldn’t move. I felt numb. My feet were glued to the spot. There were two men standing in the middle of the room, their face covered with a mask. Their head snapped to my direction.
“Oh hello, Miss Kingston.” man with bright green eyes said.
“Karrie, baby run.” Mom shouted. But I just shook my head.
“No, I’m not leaving without you guys,” I said, tears rolling down my cheeks.
“Call police.” Mom mouthed to me, when they weren’t looking at her, but at me. I nodded and took a step back. But somehow the man with bright green eyes understood it.
“Go catch her,” he yelled to the other man. I quickly turned around and began to run. But it was too late as I felt his arms around my waist, stopping me from moving any further.
“How dare you.” the green-eyed man, who wasn’t holding me shouted at my mom, kicking her on her stomach.
“NO” I screamed, trying to get free from the man’s grip. But he was very strong and held a firm grip around me. The green-eyed man looked at me.
“Now, it’s time to tell goodbye to them,” he said and the world around me stopped.
“No, please, no. Why are you doing this to us?” I yelled.
“Sorry sweetheart. My boss’s wish is my command.” And with that, he shot my mom on her head.
“Noo” I yelled. I watched blood oozing out from her head, as she crumpled to the floor. Then he shot my dad, who was already unconscious. I stood there numb, unable to do anything, only watch my parents getting killed in front of my own eyes. Then soon I was injected on my neck and I drifted into unconsciousness.
I buried my face in my hands again and cried harder. That day was the worst day of my life. Sometimes I wished they could have killed me at that time so that I didn’t have to face any more danger alone.
I closed my eyes and took deep breaths to control my tears. I counted until ten before I opened my eyes. I wiped away my tears.
I took my mobile and switched on. I checked the time and realized I had been here for six hours. Then I checked my call log. Gosh! It had 15 missed calls - 8 from Logan, 4 from Scarlet and 3 from Grecia. Huh? Grecia?
I decided to call Grecia and Scarlet once I reached home. I got up from my seat and went back home, hailing a cab.
I reached the mansion in ten minutes. And as soon as I entered the house, I heard a familiar voice –
“Oh dear! Where were you?”
