Chapter 19

It was late at night when I woke up naked with Lucifer’s arm draped over me. The stuff he used to tie me up and the sting of his hand on my ass cheek can still be felt. Slowly moving out from underneath him I moved to the bathroom to pee before coming back into the bedroom. Lights flashing by the window caught my attention. I frowned and walked closer to see what it was.

On the hidden alley behind the apartment stood a nightmare. I screamed and crawled back as fast as I could. Lucifer shot out of bed immediately. He looked for me and found me on the ground with my knees to my chest. He looked around the room for danger when he saw no signs he moved to kneel in front of me.

“Are you okay? Hey, hey. It’s okay.” He murmured as he cupped my cheeks. I was looking at him but not seeing him. He shook me gently.

“Rayna!” He shouted and I blinked. My eyes flickered up to his. He looked worried.

“What’s wrong? What did you see?” He asked in a concerned voice.

“Jim.” I whispered. I shuddered and shook my head. “I have to go. I have to leave.”

I scrambled to my feet. Lucifer shot up after me. He tried to grab for my arm but I yanked my arm away from him and continued to pack my stuff. I threw his shirt over my body and pulled on a pair of sweats. He yanked on my arm again and turned me to face him.

“Rayna! What the hell is going on? Where are you going?” He asked impatiently. I swallowed hard and dropped my bag. I wrapped my arms around his waist. He wrapped his arms around me.

“He found me, Lucifer. I saw him. He was outside that window.” I pulled back far enough to point to the window. He moved closer to the window but I pulled away-too afraid to be seen. He glanced out and after a moment looked back at me.

“I don’t see anything or anyone.” He said and walked back to me. “Are you sure you were not seeing things?”

My eyes narrowed accusingly and I pushed away from him again. “You don’t believe me?”

“I didn’t say I didn’t believe you. I just wanted to make sure-hell, Rayna, we are in the middle of nowhere. How the hell would he know you were here when we just got here?” He growled and ran a hand through his hair. I shook my head. I can’t believe it. He doesn’t believe me.

’I saw it with my very own eyes!” I shouted and pushed on his chest hard. He fell back a couple of steps.

I moved to grab my bag and clutched it to my chest as I dashed for the front door. I heard Lucifer swore before his feet quickly following me. I quickened my pace.

“Rayna! Stop!” He shouted. I got to the front door and unlocked the chain before the bolt and then moving to the door knob.

“Rayna!” He grabbed me again and yanked me around to face him. “Stop for a moment and talk to me.”

“I can’t stay. It’s not safe. I have to run.” I murmured and shook my head.

“Okay, okay. Calm down. I get it. It’s not safe.” He slowly repeated. “Can you at least wait until I am dressed then we can leave together?”

I glanced down his body and clutched my bag closer to me. I don’t know if I can risk waiting. Any minute wasted was a step closer to my death. He sighed and moved to cup my cheeks.

“Please, baby. Talk to me. Don’t just run. You can’t keep running. I promise you I will protect you.” He said softly. His eyes lowered to mine.

“How can you protect me? He is dangerous, Lucifer.” I whispered back in disbelief.

He smiled weakly. “Did you forget, I am a dangerous man too, Rayna.”

My body relaxed and I dropped the bag and threw my arms around him. He pulled me close and propped his chin on my head.

“Always running.” He mumbled. “You don’t need to run any longer, Rayna. I will end this for you.”

I tightened my arms around him and buried my face in his chest. I felt safe around him. An overwhelming sense of freedom surrounded me and I felt the burden on my shoulder being lifted.

“Now can I trust you to wait here for me while I go and get dressed?” He asked as he pulled back to look at me.

I nodded and he turned into the bedroom. I was about to turn and lock the doors again when the door opened slowly. It was like cold water splashed over my body and I froze. The smell of a familiar cigarette hit me and I screamed and pushed hard against the door. The person behind the door was surprised and pushed back. I went flying across the floor.

Lucifer came running out wearing only his jeans. A gun in his hand as he pointed at the door. It opened to revealed Rafe. Rafe raised up his hands as he looked at both of us. Lucifer dropped his raised hand.

“What the fuck, Rafe?” Lucifer growled.

“Sorry.” He mumbled.

“What are you doing here?” Lucifer asked as he pulled on a black t-shirt. He walked over to me and helped me up from the floor.

“I’m assuming you two know already.” Rafe stated with an arched eyebrow. “My men spotted a man behind the alley. When they chased after the man he fled on a bike. We couldn’t find him but got his license plate. I pulled him up in the system and that man got a bad record. He is bad news.”

“Who is it?”

“Jim, motorcycle thug gang in the southeast area. The man is a large drug dealer. He’s got connection and is very well known in the drug ring.” Rafe glanced at me. “Sorry I pushed the door. Your scream was what kicked me into kicking the door open.”

“It’s ok.” I mumbled. “Jim is dangerous. I can’t believe he found me.”

“You know him?” Rafe asked.

“I’m surprised you didn’t find that while looking up the man.” I mumbled. “He and I have a past. The past that cost me a criminal record.”

Rafe nodded in understanding before glancing up at Lucifer. Lucifer was quiet before he wrapped an arm firmly around my waist and pulled me closer to him.

“Should we find him?” Rafe asked.

Lucifer shook his head and then glanced down at me. “I have what he wants. He will find a way to get it. We just need to prepare ourselves.”

Fear grew inside me and I felt it was hard to breathe. A chill set in my bone and I moved closer to Lucifer’s body for warmth. He tightened his arms around me and then spoke again.

“Get everyone ready. We are returning tonight.” Lucifer ordered.

“But I thought we were going to spend a couple of days here?” I asked.

He sighed and turned me to face him. “We can’t. It is too dangerous and this is out of our territory. I do not have enough men with me and that is unsettling to me. My first priority is your safety and if that means going back home then we are going back home.”

A few hours later we were on a private plane and on our way back home. Lucifer had stepped out to make a few calls. I sat by the window and looked out. Rafe moved to sit next to me in Lucifer’s seat. I turned to face him.

“I have never seen him like this.” Rafe stated as he looked at Lucifer across the private plane.

“What do you mean?” I asked.

“He is a man who is always in control. He never cared about anyone except him until you. He put you first.” Rafe replied and turned to look at me. “I’ve know him for a very long time and this isn’t like him.”

“Is that a good thing or a bad thing?” I asked.

He smirked. “It’s a good thing. He likes you. I can see it. I don’t know if he told you but I can see it. You are more than you think you are in his eyes. Listen to me when I say he has never done this in his life. You are the first woman I have seen that he has gone to this kind of length to keep safe.”

“Does he have family?” I asked.

He shook his head. “No. They are all dead. He is the only one left.”

Lucifer hung up and started walking back to us. Rafe waved goodbye and left the seat. Lucifer settled back down and grabbed my hand in his as he pulled it into his lap. I looked at how our hands intertwined and thought about Rafe’s words.

Lucifer cared for me I knew that but does he like me? I knew deep inside of me that I was already in love with him and I knew I was too far gone to even return. His hand came up and he put two fingers under my chin and lifted my eyes up to his.

“Are you okay?”

I nodded. “I’m ok.”

“Get some rest. I will wake you up when we land.” He urged and placed my head on his shoulder. I closed my eyes and allowed sleep to take over.
