Horror / Mystery

I pushed floor number 4.

I was in a hurry and was pissed off when I discovered that people normally go upstairs through the stairway. I didn’t want to look haggard while taking pictures of the crime scene. People want convenience when it’s available; the small lift I saw proved me right. It had grime around its entrance but I stepped inside anyway, noticing that I had made shoeprints of intricate design with it. The door closed and I wondered why the sole lift in this building had less than arms-length of space. I thought it must be a private elevator. As the lift went up, there was a constant beeping sound. I thought it must be the reason why the stairs are recommended. Thankfully, unlike those dreaded elevator scenes in movies, I got out without much trouble.

Walking all the way to the crime scene, I was greeted by Bob, the kind and fat police officer who was assigned in almost every crime scene I was sent to. I even wondered if he ate donuts in his free time. He gave me the usual rundown of the situation; this time a 12-year old girl was stabbed by a lurking madman who was caught not later after the incident. I stared at the police lines and then at the girl. She looked very pale and had a stab wound on her chest. A pool of blood collected beneath her. Her face looked like she was at severe pain during her last moments, as if it wasn't obvious. As I took pictures of her and the whole crime scene, I noticed that her shoes’ grooves were similar to the one I saw in the lift. She must have used the elevator to try to escape or something. I looked at the sole of my shoes and found that they were rather worn-out. I finished my job and went back to the lift when the police officer called me through my cellphone. I answered the call as the lift doors closed. “Why will you use that VIP elevator?”

“I don’t care if it beeps while moving or has little space, it’s still functional and there’s no restriction sign.” I replied, the lift suddenly beeping again as it went down.

“Beeping?” The police officer said with a confused expression. “It only beeps when the load is too heavy, usually when there’s more than one person inside.”
