Blurb

Blaze Laflamme knew, ever since she was little, that she was different. She had unusually coloured eyes and hair that represented her in more ways than one. She was the epitome of fire, and everyone knew it. She was also the most feared. But she hadn't always been feared. She had been bullied, and had gone through a lot, though she'd never actually tell someone that. She didn't like the pitying looks many had given her. The only reason why she was feared now was because she had snapped. That's what happened when you were fire. Then one day three new kids showed up at her school unexpectedly, looking for her, and she doesn't know why. They drug her and take her to another where she battles, once again, with her inner demons, and a certain gorgeous water elementalist.

Prologue

I was playing out in the garden by myself. I was picking flowers. I was about ten at the time, before the bullying had started. There was a little girl playing with me as well. Her name was Sophia. We were great friends.

We were both picking flowers, and then suddenly Sophia stole all the ones from my hand.

“Look, Blaze,” she said. “Now we can make a bouquet for our parents. They would absolutely love it.”

I was angry that she hadn’t asked for the flowers. She just ripped them out of my hand.

I felt the usual heat bubble up. This happened when I was feeling a particularly strong emotion. Usually anger.

Then I erupted in flames, and Sophia recoiled away from the sudden heat. Then she started hyperventilating until the combination of heat, and panic, as well as her asthma, made her heart stop beating.

I also recoiled away form the sudden heat because this had never happened before. Yes, there had been unbearable heat, but never actual flames. That’s why I didn’t notice Sophia on the ground, her breathing non existent. Until I got my fire under control.

When I did notice her I started screaming.

Isabelle, and Ezra, who were just freshly married, came running out. They took one look at me, and one look at Sophia. The look of Panic on their faces made me start sobbing. Even as a ten year old I knew what certain looks meant. This look meant ‘a tragedy has happened’ and ‘Sophia’s dead.’

Isabelle ran into the house and called the police, running outside with the phone on her ear. “Yes, hello. There’s been a horrible accident. MY step daughter, Sophia Smith, has died. Suddenly.” Sob. “We live...” sob. “on 73 Albert St.” sob. “She’s about ten years old.” sob. “Please, get here soon.” sob.

Then I took my attention away from Isabelle, and focused on a grieving Ezra. He was visibly sobbing over a cold Sophia.

How could I have done this? I was the reason she was dead.

Then her sister, Chloe, came out, just waking up from her nap. After rubbing her eyes, trying to wake herself up, she realized the chaos around her. She took one look at Isabelle, her eyes widened, confused. She took one look at Ezra, Sophia in his embrace, and his shaking shoulders, and started sobbing. She ran over to Sophia, her twin, and started grieving with her father.

I started to hear sirens heading this way, and I took my eyes off my step sisters, both alive and dead, and Ezra, to look in the directions of the sirens.

What had I done?

After the authorities and left, after trying to get a statement out of me. Isabelle, and Ezra ushered them out, even in their grieving state.

When they were still at the door Chloe approached my and said, “I know you did this. I will make you hate every single day of your life, hate every single thing about yourself, for what you did to her. watch your back, Blaze.”

I shivered at her malicious words. She turned and stomped up to her room.

She didn’t have to make me hate myself. I already did. I had killed the only light in my life. And I had killed Chloe’s too.
