It Might As Well Be The Apocalypse

A week and a day after our first kiss, Loki slept over. I woke up in the middle of the night, and he was gone. I padded into the living room, hoping he might be out there. No dice. What I found instead was a beautiful vase full of red roses. I walked over and picked it up. On the other side, a note was speared on one of the remaining thorns. It read:

Dear Kate,

I’m so, so sorry I have to leave you, but I have no choice. If I stay with you, you will be killed, and I can’t stand to have your blood on my hands as well. Please believe me when I tell you that I love you with all my heart, but that is why I had to leave. Don’t come looking for me, and if you do, you will die. Just do me one favor, and make sure you always have a weapon on hand.

All my love,

-Loki

I sat there with the note crushed in my fist, and felt my heart shatter into pieces. I went and sat in my window seat and waited for the sun to come up

Chloe stumbled into the living room an hour or two after dawn. As soon as she saw me, she rushed over and took me in her arms.

“Oh. Oh-oh-oh, babe, what happened?” I pushed her away and held out my fist wordlessly. Chloe uncurled my fingers and read the note that had been imprisoned in my hand since midnight. She read it and her eyes grew wide "Oh. My. God." At that, I burst into tears. I had succeeded in keeping it together all night, but now the dam broke and I cried like I had never cried before. Chloe drew me in again and I buried my face in her chest and sobbed. She rubbed my back and murmured comforting nonsense to me. We sat like that for a while, until I pulled myself away and attempted to dry my tears.

"I can't believe he left like that." I said between sobs, "I feel so broken inside, I don't know how to be myself anymore." She stared at me for a moment before saying,

"Well, I see only a few options." I sniffled and looked up, "You could A, you could sniffle and sob and mope around the house for months, B, forget him and find a new bae, or C, you could get up and find him." I nodded.

"You're right. I won't let this haunt me forever." I rose and armed myself for the adventure of a lifetime.
