KIARA: I only wanted revenge. I studied him, watched him, played him. But did I get myself in too deep? MATIAS: She was an innocent woman caught in the hairs of one of my assignments. I had vowed to never love anyone, but it was like she'd been sent to test that promise. *Neither of them knew as much as they thought about the other- and when all the secrets are exposed, who would be the one to win their silent battle?

Chapter 1: Matias

I was putting away my binoculars, ready to call it a night when a flash of something caught my eye in the upstairs window of the house I’d been surveilling for the past couple months. I hurried to bring the binoculars back up to my eyes and raised the magnification. It only took a few moments for me to figure out what I’d seen- long, golden blonde hair. The group of men I’d been contracted to kill had apparently brought a new piece of meat home, and I shook my head in disgust. A part of me wanted to help her, but it would be incredibly stupid of me to barge in there without the necessary tools and information. I still had two weeks to complete the contract, and I had everything planned to the last detail. I knew their routine would allow me the perfect hit in eight days, so I just had to hope she’d survive that long.

I decided to watch for another minute, and I saw them chaining her arms to a hook in the ceiling. One of the men paused, his head tilted like he was listening to something she said. He drew back and I saw a look of surprise and anger cross his face before grabbing a fistful of her hair and pulling her head back sharply. I caught my first look at her heart-shaped face, and my mouth went dry. I could see even from this distance through binoculars that her eyes were a bright green, her lips full and cherry red. Her expression gave away nothing as to what she was feeling, and she didn’t react to whatever his response was.

I moved my gaze back to the man and saw that his face was turning red in anger. His mouth moved with another reply, but her face stayed blank. He released her hair and drew a hand back, smacking her hard across the cheek and her head whipped to the left. Anger razed through me and I gripped the binoculars tightly. You’re going to be the first to die, fucker, I thought to myself and committed his face to memory. He and the other men started laughing, and the girl slowly raised her head. A look of deadly hatred crossed her face and disappeared so quickly that I told myself I imagined it. Her face was completely blank again, and the men left the room still laughing at her expense.

The girl started at the door for several seconds and then looked around the room, breathing calmly. I came to the realization in that moment that throughout the whole thing, she hadn’t cried or cowered away from the men, hadn’t yelled or screamed for help. Either she was resigned to her situation, or she was brave as hell. A surge of pride for this unknown female went through me, surprising me. I had no idea who she was, only that she was the most beautiful creature I’d ever seen. Not only was her face stunning, but her body was fit in a way that was obvious she took care of herself, and still had curves that would stop a truck. My gaze roamed over her from her hair to her toes, back to her face. She’d closed her eyes and her lips were moving slightly, like she was repeating something to herself over and over.

Suddenly her eyes popped open and she looked around the room like she was searching for something. Her eyes slowly went to the window, searching the street below before roaming up the abandoned building I’d easily broken into. She searched the windows one by one before passing mine and then coming back a second later. I held my breath as she stared right at me- if she caught the glare of the binoculars she’d only know it was from a living being if I moved. If I didn’t move, she would probably think it was just something that’d caught the glare from the moon. We were both frozen for seconds, waiting for a break in the tension. Finally, she turned those green eyes away, closing them and going back to repeating her mantra.

I let out my breath and decided that I better head out of there. I’d already stayed too long and ran the risk of getting caught. I packed up my shit and headed back to my place across town, trying to go over the plans for the hit but getting interrupted by the green eyes of the woman. Something primal and possessive had risen in me, and it was telling me that she was going to be mine. I would kill the scum, save the woman, and claim her. A satisfied smile crossed my face, and anticipation that I hadn’t felt in a long time filled me at the idea of getting her into my arms and under my body. She had no idea what she was in for.
