Blurb

The apparently invisible traces that everything happening during childhood may take a toll in one's adult life. Carmina grew up being a happy girl, playing and enjoying life together with her siblings. Born in a Caribbean country from Spaniard parents, her life was like a dream for most of her childhood friends. Specially when her parents decided to move back to Spain when she was a teenager. A whole new world just opened for her, but she was not ready to face the awful truth: racism, conflicts, an abusive boyfriend... And that was just the start of what would give her the duty of having to choose between the courage to face all that was happening to her or letting herself go and crumble, let others break her heart into pieces and abandon the fight. Sometimes life is tough, and she had to wake up many days thinking: "what doesn't kill you makes you stronger" How will she manage it all? Can she count on her family? Friends? Will she have the protection any kid needs or will she have to face it all alone? Carmina is ready for this trip called life.

Chapter 1

Carmina was born in a sunny January day.

It was the year 1975 and some lucky countries in the Tropics enjoy their Summer from approximately November to March.

They call Summer those months where rains give them a break. When the Sun shines in the sky all day long allowing people to enjoy heavenly beaches, jungle and forests full of life and specially, the pleasure of not having to carry an umbrella all the time.

Her mother started worrying 10 days after her due date. What was happening in there? Carmina seemed to be having such a good time in the womb, moving as usual.

Anyway, Carmen asked her husband to take her to the Hospital 15 days after due date. She started being really concerned about her first child, and so was him.

After a whole day running tests and monitoring both mom and baby, doctors decided to help mom go into labor. And after many hours of pain, cursing everybody in the room from her husband to the last nurse, Carmina came into this world like any other baby, crying her lungs off, all red and feeling cold. Where was that warm, comfy and almost silent place she was enjoying?

This was a very special day for her parents, like it probably is for most new parents. Dad just couldn't stop looking at Carmina's little face, talking to her, carrying her around the Hospital proud of his newborn daughter.

This was not a new situation for him, though.

A couple of years ago, he and his wife flew away from Spain, looking for a new life across the sea. And after visiting Mexico, Guatemala, and taking a road trip heading South, they stopped in Costa Rica and decided to stay in that beautiful country where people were always kind, weather seemed to be perfect and peace was a guarantee.

They would tell their children many different reasons why they decided to leave old Europe and move to America. But the fact that Mr. Molina was married when he met Carmen, the fact that he left a wife and her 4 kids abandoned in a country managed by a dictator, where women didn't have any basic rights, like owning a bank account or managing their wealth; that was a secret they would keep hiding from everybody.

It was such a big scandal in their small towns. Mr. Molina was a good friend to Carmen's father. In fact, he knew Carmen since she was a little girl. He was 23 years older than her and when she decided to leave her house to start a relationship with a married man, in a country with so many prejudices, under a dictatorship and with him being unable to get divorced, the shadow of shame and many pointing fingers started being a constant in both Mr. Molina and Carmen's families.

Excommunicated by the Archbishop, and becoming the irresponsible husband and the whore who took him away from his four children and wife, they decided it was time to leave everything behind and look for a new start overseas.

And there they were... Holding a precious newborn girl and ready to start a fresh, new life in Paradise, where nobody knew them, nobody could ever know the reasons why they decided to leave Europe and much less, know how much pain, sadness and tears they had left behind them.

And as welcoming, sweet and nice they are, Ticos welcomed and helped this Spanish couple setting.
