Chapter Six: Dirty, Dirty
I walked into my house still feeling the sting of her Jeffrey’s hand. I couldn’t believe that he hit me. Thinking about it upset me. I realized that I probably should have come clean the moment he saw me.
I sighed and put my keys and purse down. When I flipped on the light I was surprised to see Jeffrey walk into my living room.
“Oh my God Jeffrey, you scared me.” Then I realized that he was in my house. “How did you get in here?” I asked, keeping my distance.
“I have a key remember?” He replied in a low neutral tone.
“Fair enough. What do you want? Did you come to beat up on me some more?” My tone was all anger and pain.
He sighed a huge sigh and didn’t look at me. “About that. I’m so sorry babe. I just kind of snapped.”
“Obviously,” I said, crossing my arms across my chest defensively.
Jeffrey stood looking at me before he said, “Look. I think we need to spend some time apart.”
My mouth fell open in shock. “What? Why?”
He walked a little closer to me and looked directly into my eyes. My heart was beating rapidly as I did not know what he was going to do or say to me. What I wanted was for him to grab me and kiss me passionately, but in his somber mood, I didn’t feel passion coming from him. What I felt was remorse.
“Because if I see you out with another man, I might do something I will regret.”
I was losing him. “But Jeffrey, it was only dinner.”
He crossed his arms and squinted his eyes in anger. “That’s not what it looked like to me. You were sitting there looking quite beautiful in a dress I bought for you. So, what did he want?”
I looked away. I couldn’t take his angry stare anymore. However, I answered. “Just to eat.”
“Mel, look at me,” he said coldly. I turned to absorb more of his icy stare. “Guys like Jacob always want more than dinner. That’s just where it starts.”
I smirked. How dare he think I was going to cheat on him? “Nothing was going to happen, Jeffrey.”
“You don’t know that, Melissa.”
Not knowing what to say, I felt something bad was coming, and I had to try and save my relationship. “But I love you.”
His eyes softened a little. “I love you too, but I can’t sit back and watch you cheat on me.”
“But I haven’t cheated on you,” I exclaimed.
Jeffrey stared at me a long time. He wasn’t sure what was going on between me and Jacob, but he didn’t allow me time to explain. “You were going to. Probably tonight. So, look. I don’t want you to call me. I will call you when I’m ready for us to see each other again,” and he walked out of the door obviously in pain.
“Jeffrey, wait,” I said quietly. I waited a moment and said it louder. “Jeffrey, wait!” He didn’t hear me. “Jeffrey!” It was too late. He was gone. What was I going to do without the man I loved? I fell on my couch and cried in my hands. He really left. Was what we had over? Was he going to come back to me? I had no idea, so all I could do was cry about it.
As I sat wallowing in my misery, my phone rang. I reached in my purse and looked at my phone. It was a number I recognized, so I answered.
“Hey,” I said. I listened to the other person on the phone. “He broke up with me. I’m sorry I can’t help you anymore…Okay. Talk to you later.”
I hung up the phone, laid on my couch and cried for the love I lost.
Two weeks later, I sat in my office trying to get some work done, but missing Melissa, I couldn’t concentrate. I was feeling pretty down and had to figure out how to clear my head and sitting in this office was not helping. I decided to take the rest of the day off. I turned off my computer, and lights. I walked to Dude’s open door and tipped my head in.
“Hey, I’m gonna leave.”
Dude looked up from his desk. “You alright?”
I shook my head. “No. See you later.”
Dude nodded. “Later man.”
I went outside and got into my car and started driving. I had no idea where I was going I just wanted to get away from the office. I got on the freeway. The next thing I knew, I was at the mall. I must have needed some shop therapy.
As I walked the mall, I could feel Melissa’s hand in mine even though she wasn’t there. I heard her saying, “Please babe?” And of course, I would give in. Those words in my head lead me to her favorite store. I found myself shopping for Melissa, and she wasn’t even there. This wasn’t exactly fulfilling, but it helped.
Going through a rack of suits, thinking of how she would look in each one, I heard a familiar voice from behind.
“Jeffrey?” Alani asked.
I turned to find the bright-skinned beauty behind me. “Oh hey, Alani. How are you?”
“I’m great. What are you doing here?”
I shrugged, not wanting to give her anything. “I had some free time and thought I would do some window shopping.”
Alani crossed her arms and smiled. “For who honey? You? If so, you are in the wrong store. Unless you’re into something I’m not aware of.”
Her comment brought a well needed smile to my face. “Oh, no. I guess I just wandered in here. This is one of Melissa’s favorite stores.”
The look on her face was concern. Real concern. “I heard about what happened that night. Did you break up with her?”
I shrugged again. “Well, not really. I’m just taking some time away from her. Trying to get my head on straight.”
“You must miss her.”
I nodded. “Yeah, I do.”
Not wanting to get in the middle of my relationship, she politely excused herself. “Hey look. I’m gonna go try on this dress. If you want to talk just give me a call.”
Nodding, “I will Alani, thank you.”
Therapy. That is what being in this store was for me. I missed Melissa with all I had, but I wasn’t ready to see her. Or at least this is what I thought.
Pushing through the dresses on a different rack, I tried to imagine Melissa in every dress that happened to catch my fancy. As I was doing this, a small voice came from behind. “Hey Jeffrey.”
Did I imagine it? Was it really her? I hesitated for just a moment, and then turned around to see my blue-eyed beauty staring right at me. “Hey.” My heart was pounding hard, and I wanted to reach out and touch her. I didn’t dare. I thought she still might be afraid of me because I made a mistake. I kept my hands to myself.
“What are you doing here?” Melissa asked.
“Doing a little shopping,” I replied. I looked at her from head to toe, turned, and continued to look through the rack.
“Who are you shopping for?”
I froze. Why in the hell would she ask that? I thought. Does she think I’ve moved on? I shook my head. “No one. Just...Melissa what do you want?” I huffed.
“I saw you in here and wanted to talk to you.”
I loved her. I loved her so much; I would give her anything she asked for. This was her chance to explain. If her answer was not satisfactory, I would leave her, and suffer the consequences. “If you are still hanging out with Jacob, we have nothing to talk about.”
She didn’t wait. “Honey look. The only reason I went out with Jacob is so we could talk about Kay in private.”
I was confused. “Kay? Why?” I asked.
“He still wants her. He’s a little upset that she dumped him for Dude.”
“So, you were going to stab Dude in the back?”
Melissa violently shook her head. “No. I was going to tell Jacob that he should give up on her. She seems like she’s happy.”
I paused and gazed at her. “Are you telling me the truth?”
“Yes. I love you, Jeffrey. I would never lie to you. Okay so I did that one time. But I did it for Kay and Dude.”
Feeling like an ass, I asked, “Why didn’t you tell me that night?”
Melissa shook her head. “You wouldn’t have believed me. You were too upset.”
I sighed. “About that. I want to apologize again. I’m not into hitting women. I will never do it again. I want you to forgive me. Will you forgive me?”
Melissa smiled, shrugged her shoulders, and gave me a playful smile. “Well, I don’t know...”
I was happy that she was smiling at me. I took her playful smile as though she had forgiven me. I chose not to look a gift horse in the mouth. “Since we are here, how about I buy you a new outfit and you wear it when I take you to dinner tonight?”
Melissa grinned. “How about you don’t buy me anything, and you come to my house and I will cook dinner for you.”
I laughed. “Mel, I love you, but you are a terrible cook. How about I cook for you at your house?”
“Okay sure. And I’m not that bad of a cook.”
I nodded. “Babe, yes you are. Come on let’s go.”
We met at her house. By the time dinner was finished, we made up. I reminded her how much I loved her by making love to her. She was very happy.
The following morning Melissa didn’t want to let me leave. I got out of the bed and went to the restroom. When I came out Melissa met me at the door. She grabbed me and kissed me passionately.
I enjoyed her aggressiveness, but I had places to be. “Kiss me like that again, and I won’t get to work.”
“I really missed you babe,” she said stroking my cheek.
“I missed you too. Hey, I’m gonna go get dressed so I can make it to the office before noon.”
“Wouldn’t you like to shower first?” Melissa asked, trying to get me to stay. Her carnal needs not yet met.
I laughed, “Babe I know that look. Now let me get dressed. I gotta go.”
“All right. Call me later.”
“I will. I love you.”
“Love you too.”
I walked out of Melissa’s house and made my way home to shower and get to work. Melissa took a shower herself. When she got out her phone rang. She picked it up to see that is was Kay.
I got dressed and drove downtown to the café next to Kay’s job. When I walked into the café, Kay was sitting at a table drinking a cup of coffee.
“Hey Kay. I came as fast as I could.”
“I’m glad you’re here. You have got to get Jacob to leave me alone.”
“I tried, Kay. But my little plan failed miserably.”
“If we don’t do something, Darren is going to end up in jail.”
“Why can’t you just talk to Jacob yourself?”
“Impossible. Ever since that little fiasco at dinner, Darren has been looking for a reason to hit Jacob again. I think he enjoyed it.”
I nodded. “I know his temper. Maybe he did. But look honey, I can’t do this anymore.”
Kay was defeated. “Alright. I understand. I guess I will just have to talk to Jacob at work.”
“Is that wise? When?”
Kay shrugged. “No time like the present. I will let you know how it goes. Well honey, I’m gonna get back to work. I will see you later.”
Kay walked out of the café leaving me on my own. I certainly hoped she knew what she was doing.
I was looking out of my office window with my arms crossed deep in thought. I was thinking about how I could possibly get Kay back, when I heard a knock on my door. I didn’t stop watching the goings on outside, but I said, “Come in!”
Just moments after I sent my verbal invitation to enter, I heard, “Hello Jacob.”
At the sound of her sweet voice, I immediately turned around to see if she was really there. My heart beat rapidly at just the sight of her. I desperately wanted her back. “Hey Kay.”
“How are you?”
“As well as can be expected. What do you want?”
“I just came to talk to you about us.”
“So, you are going to dump the douche and come back to me?”
Kay shook her head. “No Jacob. I came to talk to you about letting me go.”
I turned back to the window. “Not fair, Kay. I had you first. He needs to let you go.”
“That’s not going to happen, Jacob. I love him.”
“I loved you first,” I said quietly.
“You can’t know that.”
I turned around to face Kay with a slight look of anger around my eyes. “Oh yes I do. Seeing him all over town with a different woman every time I saw him. You were with me some of those times.”
“I know but...”
I walked closer to Kay. “How can you love a man who has the potential to be unfaithful to you?”
Kay crossed her arms defensively. “Jacob, everyone has that potential.”
“Not me. At least not with you. I have waited forever for you.”
“And I have waited forever for Darren.”
I turned his back and looked out of the window again. “So, you think a leopard can change his spots that fast?”
I stayed silent for a moment as I came up with an idea. I turned slowly to face Kay. “Well, I don’t think so. If I give you some proof he is being unfaithful, can we date again?”
“You will have to come up with some proof first, and then I will think about it.”
I smiled a crooked smile. “That’s a start. Now if you don’t mind, I have a contract I need to finish.”
Kay nodded. “Sure. I’ll let you finish your work.”
Kay left my office, and I immediately got on with his plan. I went to my desk and picked up my phone. “Hey. Its Jake…I’m fine, I’m fine. Hey, do you know a guy named Darren Smith? He goes by the name of Dude…Great. Hey, I need a favor.”
