Chapter Twelve: Heir to My Fortune
Kay had been with us for about three weeks. That was longer than I really wanted her to stay. It was extremely hard to see her in my house, though from a distance, and not walk up to her and kiss her. If she stayed much longer, I was going to sleep with her again. I couldn’t do that to her or Celiene.
A few days after Kay’s three-week anniversary with us, I was sitting in my office at home talking to Jeffrey on the phone. “Jeffrey, that is impossible. I’m looking at the numbers right here. Long and Associates accepted our proposal as it was…Have Amanda pull the file for you…Look in her desk. She might have filed it there.” Just then someone knocked on my door. “Hey man I gotta go. Call me if you can’t find it.”
I hung up the phone a little bit on the angry side. I’m gonna fire that girl, I swear. There was a knock on the door again. “Come in!” Kay stepped into my office. She didn’t look too good. “Hey honey, what’s up?” Kay let out a pretty ragged cough. “Are you okay?”
She shook her head. “I think I might have the flu or something.”
I smirked. “Kay if you want to stay hidden, you can’t go getting sick.”
“Seriously Darren? So getting sick is my fault?”
“I didn’t mean it like that honey. I’m sorry. You want to see a doctor?”
“I think I need to, but I can’t go out.”
“You can. We will just have to disguise you. However, I can’t take you and neither can Celiene.”
“So, who can take me?”
“I can have Josephine take you.”
She smiled at me, and I got all warm. “Thank you, Darren.”
Josephine drove me to the hospital, and we waited for my name to be called. To my surprise, the same doctor that waited on me before, saw me again. I guess he was my primary care physician. It was Dr. Hernandez.
“Well hello, Miss Jacobs. I haven’t seen you in a while. What brings you here to see me today?”
“Well, I think I might have the flu. I can’t keep my food down, and because of that I feel like I’m going to faint half the time.”
“Have you had a fever or the chills?”
“No. Just throwing up three times a day.”
“Ah, I see. Well perhaps we can do some blood work to see what might be happening.”
“Blood work? Is it serious?” I asked.
Dr. Hernandez chuckled. “No, Miss Jacobs. I just want make sure it’s not serious.”
“Okay. Doc, can you send my housekeeper in here?”
Josephine came in shortly after the doctor left. “So, Miss, what is the matter with you?” Josephine asked in a motherly tone.
“I don’t know. I guess he’s going to look at my blood under a microscope or something. He said he would be back shortly. I just wanted you to keep me company. I hate being in these tiny waiting rooms with no one to talk too.”
Thirty minutes after he took my blood, he came back in with a huge grin on his face.
“Well, Miss Jacobs, I have good news. It’s not the flu.”
“Well, what is it?”
His smile got even wider. “Congratulations, Miss Jacobs. You’re going to have a baby!”
I almost lost it right there. “What?”
He nodded and just kept smiling. “Yes, you are only a few weeks along, but you are definitely pregnant. Unfortunately, I don’t have any meds that will help with morning sickness, but here is a pamphlet with all sorts of helpful tips in it. By the time you are in your second trimester, you should be fine.”
I took the pamphlet from his hands. “Thank you, doc.” I was in shock.
“I want you to make an appointment for next month before you leave, okay? Well I’m going to let you get dressed, and congratulations again, Miss Jacobs.”
Hernandez left the room and my heart was beating a mile a minute. I turned to Josephine. “Do not tell him, Josephine. I do not want Darren to know.”
She agreed. “Your secret is safe with me, Miss.”
I put my clothes on, and Josephine drove me back to the house. I couldn’t believe it. No way I’m pregnant. Not now, I thought. I was scared. I didn’t want Darren to worry about me, and I certainly didn’t want him to know. I had to leave. I had a few thousand dollars in the bank, so I was going to hide myself from Darren, Jacob, and anyone else who wanted to find me. I just had to tell him I was leaving. My guess, Celiene would be happy. I’m quite certain she is jealous of me.
The next evening after Darren got in from work, I wanted to speak with both him and Celiene. I found them in Darren’s study, being…husband and wife.
I cleared my throat. “Excuse me for interrupting, but can I talk to you two for a minute?”
Darren smiled at me. “Sure Kay. Come on in.”
I went into the room, and they faced me arm in arm. I took a deep breath. “Thank you both for what you have done for me, but I can’t stay.”
“Where will you go?” Celiene asked.
I knew, but I wasn’t going to tell them. “I don’t know, but I have to leave.”
“You can’t go back to Jacob, we won’t let you,” Darren replied.
“I will probably stay in a hotel for a while before I find another job and get an apartment.”
The look on Darren’s face was of real concern. “Kay, you don’t have the money for that. At least let me pay for your hotel.”
I shook my head. “No Darren. I have some pennies saved up. I will be fine.”
Darren wasn’t happy, but I couldn’t burden him with me and a baby. I had to go.
Weeks after Kay left my house I got a very interesting visitor at work. I was on the phone wrapping up a phone call when I heard Amanda say, “Sir, you can’t go in there, he’s busy!”
Oh shit, who was it? I hung up the phone and prepared. “Thank you very much, Mr. Finn. I will speak with you soon.”
No sooner than I hung up my phone, Jacob burst into my office totally unannounced. My blood pressure went up so fast, I got an instant headache. Here this asshole was in my office, and he was the one who put a restraining order on me! What the fuck?
He had an angry smirk on his face, and well, I prepared to kick his ass once again. I made sure I stayed back so my fist wouldn’t accidentally slip and hit him in the face. “You are treading on very thin ice. What do you want, Jacob?”
He was pissed. “Where is Kay?” he asked loudly.
I shrugged my shoulders and spoke calmly. “I haven’t seen her.”
He took a step closer and pointed in my face. “You are a liar, Darren! You have my woman, and I want her back!” he yelled. “Where is she? Give her to me!” he yelled even louder. Now the whole office was going to be in my business. I didn’t like that. I had to get him out of there.
“The restraining order says I have to stay away from you. Why are you in my office?”
He had a moment of common sense and backed away. That didn’t stop him from making insane demands, though. “Because you have hidden my Kay! Where is she, Darren?”
I raised an eyebrow. “Your, Kay?”
“Yes, my Kay! She loves me, and I will not allow you to have her!”
I took a moment to take a few deep breaths. My subordinates were not going to hear me raise my voice, and they were not going to see me taken away in handcuffs. “Get the hell out of my office, Jacob. I do not have Kay, and I have not seen Kay in over a year.”
He pointed at me angrily and said through his teeth, “This is not over, Darren. I know you know where she is. I’ll be back.”
He stormed out of my office, leaving me with a huge headache. If I saw that fucker on the street, I was gonna take my chances and go to jail. Amanda came into my office not long after she saw him leave.
“Are you okay sir?”
I shook my head. “No, Amanda, I’m not. I have a headache. Will you please bring me something?”
“Fine. Just bring me something.” She turned around and went to find me some meds for my head. After that day, I didn’t see Jacob anymore. I hadn’t seen Kay. She just disappeared. I couldn’t worry about that. I could only assume she left to protect me, and rightfully so. I couldn’t be involved in her life anymore. She left me more than once, and I was married. Life goes on.
Two months later, I was again at home on the phone with Jeffrey. We were talking about another one of our multi-million-dollar deals. Our potential client this time was Harrison Industries. Richard Harrison Sr. had a reputation of being a stingy hard ass. If the details of his deals were not to his satisfaction, he has been known to pull out without notice. It took me and Jeffrey months to get him to come to our table, and I was not about to lose him.
“No, no, hell no. Harrison called last week. He told me we had the account,” I said, frustrated. “Call his ass again…Jeffrey, call him again. We don’t want to lose him. He is way too valuable.” Just then there was a knock at my office door. “Hey man I gotta go…Okay shit, I’ll call him then. I’m out.”
I hung up the phone pissed off. It looked like Harrison was trying to pull out of a deal he agreed on. I had to fix it, and I didn’t have time to deal with my wife or trivial household bullshit.
“Come in!” I yelled.
Josephine walked in the door. “Excuse me for bothering you Darren, but are you busy?”
I nodded my head. “Actually, Josephine I was. What is going on?”
“Celiene has some news she would like to discuss with you.”
She was not serious. “She couldn’t come and tell me herself?”
I took a deep breath. “Josephine, I am very busy now. What is this about?”
“I think you should go to her now, Darren.”
Both Josephine and Celiene knew not to bother me when I was working from home. I worked from home so I could get some peace from my subordinates coming into my office all day. I shook my head. “Not until my business is settled. Please leave me be, Josephine.”
“As you wish.”
She walked out of my door and closed it behind her. I took several deep breaths before I made a phone call. I got Richard Harrison Sr. on the phone to find out why he was trying to back out on us. It was a long and unpleasant phone call, but in the end, I talked him down off the bridge.
I ate late, took a shower, and prepared for bed. My wife was unusually quiet. I had forgotten that I was supposed to talk to her. Now was a good a time as any. When I came from the bathroom, she was sitting on the end of our bed in tears. I regretted not talking to her sooner.
“What’s the matter babe?” I asked sitting next to her.
“Oh, it’s nothing honey,” she replied wiping the tears from her face.
“Josephine told me you wanted to talk to me about something. I’m sorry I didn’t come right away, but I was trying to save a deal. What is it?”
“You’re going to be mad at me.”
“For what?” It took her a minute to gather her confidence, but what came out of her mouth next, I didn’t expect.
I thought I heard it, but I wasn’t sure. “What?”
She thought I was upset, but she repeated herself. “We’re going to have a baby.”
I leaped off the bed in excitement. “Oh my God Celiene, that’s wonderful!”
“You’re not mad?”
I managed to chuckle. “No baby, not at all.”
Four months later, I got another surprise. I was in my study reading, when Celiene came in to tell me that she was going to the doctor. I was disappointed because I forgot, and I couldn’t go with her. She reassured that she would be okay, kissed me on the cheek and left. Fifteen minutes later, Josephine walked in.
I turned the page of my book. “Yes, Josie, what is it?”
“There is a woman here to see you.”
A woman? “Who is it?” I asked, confused.
“She says her name is Lucy Hernandez.”
What’s she doing here? I thought. But I guess I could just go find out. “Very well Josie, show her to the sitting room.”
She nodded and left my study. I waited a few minutes and got up and went to our small sitting room. I was surprised to see her with a very handsome young man by her side.
“Lucy, it is so good to see you. What brings you here today?”
“I wanted to see you. I’m not sure if you heard, but my husband passed away suddenly.”
I was visibly upset. “Oh no Lucy, I’m so sorry. Dr. Hernandez was such a nice man. What happened?”
“Heart attack. He was a healthy man, or so I thought. Maybe he was keeping something from me,” she shrugged. “I don’t know.”
“I’m here for you if you need anything, you know that,” I replied sincerely.
I looked at the young man standing next to her a little closer. He looked like someone I knew, but I couldn’t put my finger on whom. “So, who is this handsome young man?” I asked with a smile.
“Oh, I’m sorry. Darren, this is my son, Walter. Walter, this is Darren Smith.”
The longer I looked at him, the more he reminded me of Charlie. At least from what I can remember of Charlie. “Nice to meet you, Walter.”
“Nice to meet you too, Mr. Smith.”
Lucy turned to her son. “Walter, I need to speak with Mr. Smith alone. Can you go wait in the car?”
Walter left the room. I couldn’t wait to hear what she had to say. I didn’t even bother waiting. “He’s my son, isn’t he?” I asked with my arms crossed.
Lucy shrugged. “Not in so many words.”
“What in the hell does that mean, Lucy? He’s either mine or he isn’t.”
“He’s actually Charlie’s son, but he doesn’t know that.”
“What does he have to do with me, and why did you bring him here, so I could meet him?”
“Have you ever wondered why I stopped talking to you all those years ago?”
“Um, you were angry with me?”
“Hell yeah, I was angry. You took away the love of my life.”
I thought about the moment when I pulled the trigger. I didn’t mean to kill him. I was just a scared kid. “I loved you, Lucy. I really did.”
Lucy sighed loudly. “I fucked your brains out, Dude. You didn’t love me. It was lust, and that was all.”
I didn’t want to talk about the past. I wanted to know why she brought her son to my house to meet me. “So, is he Charlie’s baby?”
“Charlie was white. Did you get a look at Walter? Of course, Charlie was his father.”
Now I was really confused. “So why are you here again?”
“Because you killed his father. You owe me, Dude.”
I shook my head. “I don’t owe you anything.”
“You must not have heard me. You deprived my son of a father. You owe me. He knew Gabriel wasn’t his real father.”
I crossed my arms in front of me and smirked. “So, you told him I was his father.”
Lucy nodded. “I did. But as long as Gabriel was alive, he had no need to meet you. But since Gabriel is dead, he’s going to need a successful male role model in his life. I don’t want him on the streets like Charlie and I was.”
I shook my head. “I can’t do this, Lucy. Not now. I have a wife and a baby on the way.”
Lucy shrugged. She didn’t care. “Congratulations. But you owe me, Dude.”
I think this was her way of getting me back for killing Charlie. I kill her man; she brings his baby to my doorstep and leaves him there. If that is what she was attempting, I was grateful that he was not ten.
“So, what do you want me to do?” I asked, really wondering.
“Get to know him. Hang out with him. Teach him things. He’s a smart kid. Looking to go to either Columbia or Cornell.”
I was impressed. “Wow. Ivy League?”
“Why not? Gabriel graduated from Harvard. And if I’m not mistaken, you yourself went to Brown. I will give you a chance to talk to your wife. But all I want is Walter to have a father figure in his life.”
I closed my eyes and sighed. How hard could it be? He seemed like a nice enough kid. “Agreed. Have him come over this weekend, and I will start to get to know him.”
“Oh yes, and Dude?”
Oh damn, another condition. “What?”
“Remember, he knows nothing of his birth father. I have told him all his life that you are his father.”
“That’s not fair, Lucy.” I smirked.
She looked at me with those beautiful soul-sucking eyes and replied, “There was a fifty-fifty chance that you could have been. I was sleeping with you and Charlie at the same time.”
Lucy and her son left my house while my wife was at her doctor’s appointment. I hoped that all was good with the baby, so Celiene would be in a good mood. What I had to speak with her about was certainly going to piss her off, but I had to tell her. I was coming from my office, when I heard her come in. Oh, holy crap. Brace yourself Dude.
“Darren!” Her voice echoed through our large house.
I made my way to the foyer and greeted her with a kiss on the cheek. Yeah babe, what’s up? How’s the baby?”
She was extremely excited. “The baby is great. I listened to his heartbeat today.”
“Him? It’s a boy?”
“The heartbeat was slow, so the doctor says more than likely it is a boy. If so, you will have a son to carry on the family name.”
I suddenly got just as excited as she was. A boy! I will do all kinds of things with him! I won’t let work get in the way, I thought. Of course, I was thinking of how my father was never there when I was a kid and wanted to do kid things. I was not going to do that to my son. “We will do all kinds of things together! I’m so happy babe!”
Thinking about what I was going to have to tell her next, wiped the smile right off my face. “Lucy came by to see me today.”
