Chapter Eleven: Bad Dreams and Old Feelings

It didn’t take long for me to fall in love with Celiene. She was all the things she was when we were just friends with benefits. Sweet, caring, beautiful, generous and holy cow could she cook! When she was just a friend, I didn’t get all her all the time, but now, I saw what I was missing by not really dating her.

I loved Celiene, really, I did, but I just couldn’t get Kay off my mind. Now that I knew just what Jacob was doing to her, I had to find a way to help her. I happened to be thinking of her quite hard lying next to my gorgeous wife, and I tried my hardest to sleep. I tossed and turned, trying to get comfortable. I decided to pull Celiene close. I was able to relax, and finally fell asleep. As usual when something was bothering me, I dreamt.

When I opened my eyes, I was looking at myself in the mirror. I was much older. My dreads were no longer the color of a young man. I was beginning to grey, but for some reason, it didn’t bother me. It was just another day. I heard the front door open and made my way to my living room. When I got there, there was a young couple kissing.

“Hey, hey, hey!” I exclaimed. “What’s going on in here?”

A good looking young man was kissing on a very pretty girl in my living room. They stopped what they were doing when I entered the room.

“Oh, hey dad. I’d like for you to meet my girlfriend.”

I smiled and greeted her. “Hello, young lady.”

She returned the smile. “Nice to meet you, Mr. Smith.”

“Where’s mom?” the handsome kid asked. I assumed that he was my son, since he asked where his mother was. My subconscious led me to believe that Celiene was his mother. He was a mixed kid. He had brown, Asian like eyes, and light skin. Of course, this kid in my dream was my kid. Mom was Celiene.

“She’s working. Would you like me to go get her?” I asked.

He nodded. “Yeah. I want her to meet my girl too.”

I turned to leave the room and added, “Alright. And hey, no kissy face when she walks in here.”

My son smiled. “Yes sir.”

I left the room and heard them laugh. Young folks, I thought. I made my way to my wife’s office. I walked in to announce something I thought was pretty exciting.

“Babe, guess what?”

It was like I was watching a movie. The camera or my eyes in this case, speed across the room and focused on someone I didn’t expect.

“What is it?” she asked, looking up from her paperwork. Holy shit, it was Kay.

What the hell? Kay is my son’s mother? No way, she can’t be!

I sat straight up in bed, my heart racing. I woke up Celiene. I was breathing heavily as that dream woke me up out of a dead sleep.

“What’s the matter, Darren?” Celiene asked.

I got my bearings and calmed down a bit. I couldn’t tell her about my dream. “Just a nightmare babe. Go back to sleep.”

I lay down and again pulled my wife close to me. Why in the hell was I dreaming about Kay? It has been months. She didn’t love me. She didn’t want me. Damn it Darren, stop thinking about her! It’s hopeless! She does not want you!

I held Celiene tighter, and finally went back to sleep.

Two weeks later, I had a very important meeting, and I needed my paperwork for it. I went to the file room to look. I looked in every place I thought they should be filed, and nothing. Where in the hell is that paperwork? My assistant told me she filed it, but I didn’t see it anywhere. Damn it where did she put it? I looked through the paperwork on the desk in the file room and still nothing. I’m gonna kill her.

“Amanda! Get your little boney ass in here!” I yelled.

“Coming sir!” she yelled from the other room. “Yes sir?” she said as she entered the room. My assistant, Amanda, was a good-looking red head with avocado green eyes, and freckles that didn’t make her look like a kid. Basically, her freckles fit her face. She had a fondness for dressing for the weather, and not like she was coming to work. Well, at least she wore a skirt to work every day. That way I could admire her very long athletic legs in the three to four-inch heels she often wore.

Yes, I thought she was attractive, but that wasn’t all about her. She was smart as hell, and very good at her job. She took care of me while in the office, and I appreciated it. However, this day, I wasn’t very happy with her.

I crossed my arms and gave her a very stern look. “Two days ago, I gave you some paperwork to file. I told you it was important.”

She nodded. “Yes sir, you did.”

“Well I have a meeting with Leonard Long of Long and Associates in fifteen minutes. Were the hell is it?”

“Oh, sorry sir, I put it in my desk.”

She stood there looking at me. Perhaps waiting on me to tell her good job. Not so much. I stared at her for a few more seconds before I lost it. “So, are you going to make we wait all day? Go get it!”

She jumped, startled, “Yes sir!” She ran from the file room to retrieve the paperwork from her desk. I patiently waited. She re-entered with a file in her hand. “Here you go sir. Sorry sir.”

I took the file from her hand. “Thank you. The next time I ask you file something I mean in the file cabinet and not in your desk.”

“Yes sir, I will sir. Sorry sir.”

I looked at how she was dressed. She wore a shirt that showed her midriff and a skirt that was above her knees. I immediately got in her ass about that too. “And I have told you a thousand times to wear some decent clothes to work. This is an office not a night club.”

“I’ll remember sir. Um, Mr. Smith?”

“Yes, what is it?” I asked as I thumbed through the file.

“There is a woman in the waiting room asking for you.”

I closed the file and looked at my watch. “I don’t have time. Tell her to come back.”

“I tried, but she said it was important.”

I rolled my eyes. “Alright, alright. Go put this on my desk and see if Jeffrey is ready.”

She nodded. “Yes sir.”

I moved past her with purpose. Who in the hell is here to see me? I made my way to the waiting room, and saw a woman covered from neck to toe. Long sleeves and a long skirt. Her hair was a little messy, and she had her back to me. I had no idea who she was, but I was polite. “Excuse me ma’am. I’m Darren Smith. You wanted to speak to me?” She turned around, and I couldn’t believe it. It was Kay. “What are you doing here?” I asked. My heart turned nineteen flips almost all at once.

“I need your help. He won’t stop beating me.”

What she wore, was not something I would normally see her in. I was used to seeing her in good quality clothing, that fit the occasion. She always looked good in everything she wore. I was stunned to find her in the long sleeves and skirt that went all the way to the floor. She closely resembled a homeless woman. For some reason, I was fixated more on her attire than why she was really in my office. “Kay, what are you wearing?”

She looked around the room as if someone was watching her. “When I leave the house, this is how he wants me to dress,” she whispered. “He says he doesn’t want anyone looking at me.”

I sighed heavily. I couldn’t believe it. He finally broke her. I really didn’t want to get involved in her relationship. Celiene and I were happy. I really just wanted to move on. “Honey look. I have a very important meeting in like five minutes.”

“Darren, don’t make me leave, please!” She replied in a panicked state. She was scared. I couldn’t let her leave without talking to her first. Perhaps I could help in some way. I did tell her that she could come to me if she needed help.

“I want you to stay here. Go into my office and lock the door.”

She was really scared. “No, no! Please don’t leave me! I don’t want him to find me!” She was almost in tears as she continued to look around the room.

I put my hand on the small of her back. When I did, my heart beat out of control. Oh shit. It can’t be true. “Calm down sweetie, calm down. Come on. We will go to my office and you will be safe.” I walked her to my office. My meeting was starting without me, I had to go.

“How long are you going to be?” She asked with real fear in her eyes.

“To be honest, I don’t know. But I want you to wait for me. There is some water and juice in my refrigerator. Help yourself to whatever you want. I promise I will be back as soon as I can. We will talk when I come from my meeting.”

She took a deep breath and seemed to relax a little. “Thank you, Darren.”

I smiled a crooked smile. “You’re welcome, Kay.”

I went into my meeting with her heavy on my mind, but I didn’t let it distract me. I did wonder why she came to me. I guess I would find out after my meeting.

My meeting lasted two hours. I hope she didn’t leave. When I opened my office door, she lay on my couch sound asleep. She was still beautiful even with her eyes closed. I needed to talk to her to find out what was going on.

“Kay honey, wake up!” I said firm enough to wake her from her sleep.

She slowly opened her eyes and blinked a couple of times. “Darren?”

I nodded. “Yeah honey, come over here.” I watched her walk across the room, and for some reason, I was excited. After my meeting, and before I got to my office, I figured out how I was going to help her. She got close enough for me to feel the tension coming off her. Or was it me? I wasn’t sure. I just knew I had to help.

“Kay, you are going to go home with me.”

She shook her head violently. “No, no. I can’t.”

I didn’t understand. I thought she wanted me to help her. “Why not? You will be safest with me.”

She stared up at me with those gorgeous brown eyes, and said, “Because you’re married now, Darren. I can’t impose on you and Celiene.”

“Would you rather stay with Jeffrey?” I asked, giving her an alternative.

“No. I just don’t want to go home.”

I stared at her, wondering what happened to the strong woman I knew. Where did she go? The woman that stood in front of me was definitely not her. “Baby, what happened to you? How did you let that vile piece of shit break you down like this?”

There was a hint of anger in her eyes as she replied, “You. You happened to me. All I wanted was your love, Darren.”

Oh shit, the guilt. “I know baby, and I am sorry. I shouldn’t have cheated on you.”

She took a deep breath and smiled. She moved closer to me and placed her hand on my chest. I’m sure she felt my heart going crazy in my chest. My breathing became erratic. “I still love you, Darren.”

I just stared at her not knowing what to say. Did I still love her? I wasn’t sure. But I do know that I wanted to get closer to her. I pulled her in, and I kissed her. I kissed her so passionately; I was beginning to get an erection. I was going to have her. I had to have her, at least one last time.

I started pulling at her clothing, and she didn’t seem to mind. Oh shit. I was about to cheat again. This time on my wife. I couldn’t stop myself. Did I really want to stop?

No. Her breasts, her ass, her sweet lips. They were mine again after so long, if only for a while. We quietly made love in my office. It was as if I had never been away from her. I did know one thing for sure. If I were going to stay married to Celiene, Kay couldn’t stay in my house for long.

I had to tell my wife. Why I didn’t call her before I left with Kay in my car is beyond me. She might be a little pissed that I brought my old girlfriend home with me. But I wanted to help her. I didn’t have any ideas in the office. Maybe Celiene had an idea.

I found her in my study reading. Celiene was as beautiful as Kay, I loved her too.

“Hey babe,” I said as I walked into my study.

“Hey,” she replied with a smile and a kiss on the cheek.

“How was your day?”

She smiled. “Great. How was your meeting today?”

“Long and productive. What did you do all day?”

“Nothing really. I went out and did a little shopping, then came home. I argued with Josephine about what I wanted you to have for dinner.”

I laughed. “Let me guess. You lost.”

“Of course, I did. I swear that woman is like your mother.”

I nodded in agreement. “When my mother wasn’t around, she was my mom. She helped raise me, Celiene.”

“She hates me.”

I chuckled. “No, she doesn’t hate you. She just wants you to respect her.”

“I will fire her ass.”

No one was going to get rid of Josie. Not even my wife. “No. But I don’t want to talk about Josie. I have something kinda important to speak with you about.”

“What is it?”

I was pretty nervous. I expected Celiene to lose it. Here goes. “Kay showed up at my office today, babe.”

Celiene rolled her eyes. My guess, she really didn’t want me to see that, but I did. “What did she want?”

“From how she looks and how she is dressed, Jacob is still abusing her.”

“What? Oh, my goodness where is she now?” Celiene asked in surprise.

Was that a genuine reaction? I have no idea, but I went with it just in case it was. “That’s what I wanted to talk to you about. I brought her home with me.”

“For goodness sake, Darren,” Celiene smirked. “Why didn’t you just tell me?”

“I didn’t know how you would react.”

She crossed her arms in front of her in anger. Did I fuck up?

“Damn it, Darren. I know what she means to you. You know I would have understood.”

Maybe I did, maybe I didn’t. “But babe...”

“I want to talk to her alone. Go get her,” Celiene interrupted.

I left my study and went to get Kay. I sent her into my study where Celiene waited patiently. What was going to happen? I had no idea. But I hoped there wouldn’t be any screaming.

Celiene

Kay walked into Darren’s study and I couldn’t believe my eyes. She had a look of embarrassment on her face. I immediately felt sorry for her.

“Hello Celiene,” Kay said softly as she didn’t look me in the eyes.

Darren was right. She looks terrible. I thought. “Kay honey, how are you?”

“As well as to be expected, I guess,” she said softly.

“Kay, please. You don’t have to pretend with me. Just tell me the truth.”

After a few moments, Kay broke down and started crying. “I’m so sorry Celiene. I didn’t have anyone else to turn to.”

“It’s okay, it’s okay. I understand.”

“Jacob doesn’t trust me. He keeps me locked up in his house.”

“You can stay here for the time being, honey. Darren and I will help you.”

“I don’t know how to thank you, Celiene. You didn’t have to do this for me.”

“It’s okay honey, it’s okay. You are our friend. We’ll do anything to help. I promise.”

“Thank you. You don’t know how much this means to me.” Kay sobbed almost out of control.

I couldn’t stand it anymore. I walked closer and gave Kay a hug. “It’s okay honey, believe me. Come on let’s go get you cleaned up.”

I showed Kay to one of our many rooms that had an adjoining bathroom and left her there. We were about the same size, so I went to my closet and found some clothes for Kay to change into. Not knowing what to do next, I went to talk to Darren.

Dude

“How is she?” I asked.

“She’s taking a shower. Holy shit, she stank. Jacob is not good for her.”

In my head, Celiene was agreeing that Kay could stay. I was happy. “She can sleep in the east wing. She will have her own space. We’re not using it anyway.”

“She can’t stay here, Darren.”

What the hell? Seriously? Here I thought she was on board only to be blindsided with what I assumed to be jealousy. Celiene had nothing to be jealous about. She was my wife, not Kay. “Honey, if you are worried about us being together, you don’t have too.”

Celiene shook her head. “I trust you. However, you must have forgotten about the restraining order.”

She was lying to me. She lied to my face. She didn’t trust me, but I was going to do what I wanted anyway. The house she lived in was my house.

“The restraining order says I have to stay away from Jacob. It has nothing to do with Kay.”

“You’re right. Sorry.”

“So, what did she tell you? Did you talk with her?”

“No, not really. She is still too upset.” Celiene was upset, and I knew it. I’m not sure what was going on in her head, but she obviously didn’t want to discuss it. “Babe I’m going to bed. We can sort this out in the morning.”

I let my wife leave me without explanation. It was good that I did. I was going through some things that I didn’t want her to see. I really think I was still in love with Kay but was denying it. I had to deny it. I was married. In love with Celiene. Yes, in love with Celiene.

Kay stayed with us for the weekend. She was still crying a lot, and I didn’t know what I could do to help her. In the meantime, I stayed away from her, and gave Celiene all my attention. This way, there was focus. I needed that.

However, I wanted Kay to be comfortable around both me and Celiene. A shopping spree is what I planned for her. Spend a little money, get out, and see other people. It would be good for her. I was dressed and ready to go to work when I dropped my latest idea in Celiene’s lap.

“I want you to take her shopping today, Celiene.”

“Isn’t that a bit risky? I thought you wanted to keep her hidden.”

I hadn’t thought that far ahead. “You’re right.” I suddenly thought of something I hadn’t before. “Call my mother’s designer. You’ll find his number in my phone book on my desk.”

“Will he come on such short notice?”

“Celiene, you did not know my mother. Believe me, if her designer is still alive, he will come. I have to get going. I’ll see you later babe.”

I gave her a kiss on the cheek and walked out of the door.

Celiene did as I asked and called my mother’s designer. His name was Jacques Deveraeux. A real pain in the ass, but brilliant.

Three days later Jacques Deveraeux entered the Smith Mansion once more. His larger than life personality filled up my house as soon as he entered. I was in my study, quietly reading when I heard him coming before he even knocked on my door.

I rolled my eyes and there was a knock on my door. “Come in!” I said loudly.

The door burst open, and in he walked. Jacques Deveraeux was a tall, dark-skinned man who wore his long wavy dark hair back in a tight ponytail. He sported a navy, window pane suit with a light blue shirt, navy tie and some good-looking black Italian leather shoes. I will give it to him, he was always well dressed. Too bad he only designed women’s clothes.

“How have you been, Darren? It has been years since I have seen you. I’m so glad that you didn’t forget about me. I miss your mother. She was one of my best clients. So, who are we dressing today?”

“A friend of mine.”

“Well, where is she?”

“She is staying in my mother’s wing.”

“Well come on, Darren, let’s go meet her.”

I rolled my eyes again. “How’s Jean Paul?” I asked getting up from my chair, walking towards the door.

“I don’t want to talk about him, Darren. He was cheating on me, so I left him.”

I laughed, “His loss.”

“You bet your sweet ass, it was his loss.”

I laughed again, and we made our way to Kay’s room. I knocked, and her sweet voice invited me in.

“Kay, I thought you could use some new clothes. So, I called my mother’s designer.”

“Oh Darren, you didn’t have to do that.”

“I wanted too. I would like to introduce Jacques Deveraeux.”

“It’s nice to meet you, Jacques.”

“Oh, my goodness. You are beautiful! I can’t wait to dress you.”

I crossed my arms in front of me. “Jacques, please cool it. This woman is fragile.”

“She won’t be after I’m done with her. Darren darling, please leave us. I need to work some magic here.”

“I am paying you a small fortune. Please dress her properly.”

I walked out of the room and left Kay in the hands of a professional. I hoped she would appreciate what I was doing for her.
