INTRO

The moon cascades over the dark alleyway as young little Becca tries to adjust her mask. She had just recently been given her first one. It’s not as large as the adults, what with it just barely covering her cheeks, but soon it will be. As her burdens and life piles on top of her, her mask shall get bigger and cover more of her shameful face.

She doesn’t see the dark shadow slinking behind her slowly. His face is completely covered by a black mask, symbolizing him as being in the Dark Clan.

He wears a cloak that swirls around him as the frigid air bites at his figure, watching and waiting for something to happen to her.

He knows her. He always has, ever since she was a baby. Since she was maskless.

His footsteps fall lightly as Becca busies herself with her mask again. Suddenly, she stops and pulls at the strings that hold it to her.

“I hate this!” She cries as the mask falls to the cement.

Suddenly a black gloved hand is on her and shaking her wildly.

“What have you done?” The strange masked man cries from behind the plastic. “Put it back on!”

Scared, Becca turns and tries to run away, but the man in the mask holds onto her, his hand cutting off circulation.

“Put it back on!” He screams. “Put it back on, Becca!”

Tears fall from her eyes as the fear inside of her explodes outward. The man picks up the mask hastily and shoves it onto her face. Becca cries out in pain as he screams at her again.

Suddenly, he stops yelling and takes a step back, still holding onto her wrist.

“Oh,” he says softly, sweetly. “That’s better.”

The masked man turns and walks away from the terrified little girl.

Brian Shaber: I very much enjoyed this. I was a fun read, the characters and story expanding immensely as it went (almost to the point of bewildering me). The characters, settings, and scenes were vivid. The world-building (though, as I said, bewildering after a while) was most impressive. The grammar erro...

snowview03: This is the first book I have read on this app and I loved it! When I read the title I thought about the hunger games, but this novel is so much more. re8622: The Last Exodus quickly grabbed my attention. Almost as soon as I started reading the story, I couldn't put it down. jusdafax: This is an enjoyable SF/coming of age story with a strong plot some well drawn characters and an interesting background in Green Hell. I enjoyed the flow of the book although I did find the switching between different characters and venues (good guys vs bad guys) a bit abrupt and off putting. A...

Deleted User: Rarely do I find a mystery that peeks my interest, but Jack Huber's Pat Ruger reminds me of Parker's Spenser or Spillane's Hammer! Strong character with the right connections and plot drivers to keep anyone engaged and never putting it down. The encounters of the characters Ruger engages, continue...

Chevonne Prinsloo: I loved this book.. I didn't want to stop reading it! just my kind of book... I really love how the plot of the story carries along. I hope there are more books to follow after this one! I like the way she describes how Rogue is feeling and the way she shows the emotions going through Rogu. I als...

CC-Lemon: Just read the first chapter. Love how the main character thinks and is conflicted over his wife and the trickery he uses on her.
