Prologue

I knocked on the office door hearing the usual command from the geneticist. Edgar, one of her most trusted assistants entered the room as I followed behind him. I had told him I needed to speak to Hudson. He had asked me if there was something wrong with the baby and I nodded. It was the only way they could let me out of that horrible room.

She was taking notes about something before she lifted her head towards me. "What is it?"

"I need to speak to you," I glanced at Edgar. "Alone."

I waited for Hudson to tell him to go away, but she didn't. Instead, she prompted me to continue. At that moment I felt scared they could feel my discomfort. God knows what they would do to me, but it was too late to go back now.

"I'm going to keep her," I declared, the statement almost echoing on the walls.

"And you will," she agreed. "Until she turns ten. By that time, I'm hoping you can teacher her how to control her abilities."

I was afraid this was going to happen. She knew what I really meant, but shrugged it off with the hopes I would give up that idea.

"No, Hudson. I have decided to raise her myself.”

She laughed, probably waiting for me to tell her I was only joking. I kept silent. She got up from her seat and walked towards me with caution so as not to scare me away. Every step she took made me flinch, but I wasn't about to run. When I first met Hudson in the military basement, she looked very professional and calm but in truth we couldn't have been in worse hands than hers. There were rumors around the lab about her going mad after her sister’s death. I didn’t know what had happened and I didn’t dare ask. Not anymore.

"You signed a contract. A contract that cannot be broken," she reminded me calmly.

I kept my stance firm. "Which is incomplete. You never mentioned you were going to change her, or that you were going to give her to the military."

"I was willing to ignore you spying my conversations, but now that you brought it up I have a problem with that.”

How did she…? The cameras.

“I would have stopped if my child’s fate wasn’t at risk.”

The moment I came here she had revealed to me she had injected herself for quite a while with the hopes she could develop the same abilities Jordan and I had. However, she still hadn't made it. I didn’t think too much about it, and that was my mistake. This kind of behavior couldn’t be from a rational person. She even had to ally with the military to find people like us. We were told there were many that weren't better than circus performers, but there were a few special ones. Their genes could be combined, changed, enhanced.

"Change of plans," she said nonchalantly.

I've heard that each geneticist had its own goals to make this work. Some were doing it to help people. Others, like Hudson, seemed to be doing it to prove something to her colleagues.

"No," I shook my head, walking slowly towards the door. "She's my daughter and I'm quitting."

I extended my arms to reach the knob, but Edgar was now in my way. Realization dawned on me. They wouldn't let us go. I had to do something. I grabbed Edgar’s arm using my abilities as he screamed, I tried to run while he was still in pain but he was stronger and faster than me. One second I thought I had touched the knob and the next I was on the floor not knowing what had happened. I could barely see because the throbbing on my cheek was overcoming all my other senses.

“Watch out for the baby,” Hudson scowled at Edgar.

He picked me up by my arms as I shook my bad vision away. I tried to twist away from his hold, but I was too weak to match his strength. Hudson went to her desk as my shouts increased. She would always carry sedatives with her, and now that I have revealed my intentions she would probably keep me sedated before getting Susan and killing me. I wasn't different now from her experiments. I had just become another, and if needed, I would be treated just like one until Hudson had what she wanted.

"No, please, don't change her," I begged.

"Stop with the perfect mother act," she spat.

Edgar grabbed me by the arms. "Help! Someone help me, please!"

"What are you doing? No!" I screamed with all my might when she pinched me.

"Take her back to her room and make sure no one visits her without my permission first. Tell the team from the control room to watch her at all times over the cameras," she ordered.

“What about Jordan?” Edgar asked.

“Tell him to start equipping his new home with electric insulators. His new family will be with him soon enough.”

What was she planning now? I didn’t know about this either. I wanted to ask, but my words came out slurred as my vision blurred once again. I needed to tell Jordan that he had to take Susan away from here. I couldn’t let them change and sell her.

Edgar nodded, lifting my body with ease. My protests were starting to recede as I was being carried away from Hudson’s office, the cold liquid traveling through my bloodstream.
