Dash leaves for home early the next morning, probably to let his mother know that I’ll be joining them for lunch. I pull up in the driveway of his parents’ home. My hands start shaking because of my nervous. Dash rushes over with excitement. I take a deep breath and open my door. “Hey there” he greets and hugs me. “Are you ok? You look a bit pale” he says as he notices my blood drained complexion. “I’m okay” I reply. We walk to the door where his mother is waiting. It feels strange entering this house again. His mother stands in the passage waiting. A huge warm smile appears on her face when she sees me. “Alexis my child” she hugs and kisses me on the cheek. “Mamie” I reply. “Oh, I have missed you” she says while looking at me from arm’s length. “Still as beautiful as ever.” This makes me blush of course.
As I walk through the house I feel faint. I hold onto to Dash to stabilize me as my legs feel like jelly. The rooms are filled with pictures of David. It’s almost a bit scary but they loved him. Dash notices the grip I have as I hold his arm and takes me to the dining room table to sit down. Mamie makes us some tea in the meantime.
“You sure you ok?” Dash asks again concerned. I nod my head. Not long his father comes in as well. “My dear” he greets with a big smile. “How are you?” It’s strange to hear his father so pleased to see me, he was always very quiet, not saying a word. “I’m doing fine, Uncle D” I reply. Dash’s mother brings in the tea and some snacks and sits down alongside her husband. Dash remains by my side. “We’ve missed you my child. Why haven’t you called or visited? I know that it hasn’t been easy without him.” Mamie asks sadly. “I know that it’s been a while, but it still hurts to think of David sometimes. But Dash convinced me that I needed closure.” I reply taking her hand “He loved you with all his heart you know” Mamie replies, this makes her want to cry. “She knows mum.” Dash responds. The mood is a bit sad and dreary but I guess we needed to think of David then to give it all perspective. I help Dash set the table, which gives us an opportunity to have some fun. We are like two children playing. “Is the table ready?” Mamie asks as she hears the laughter in the dining room. We sit down and say grace and start digging into a delicious home cooked family meal, something I have not had in a very long time. We reminisce about David, remembering what type of person he was and the little things that made him special. After this we sit around the table enjoying some desert. “I’m glad you decided to come, Alexis. Dash hasn’t stopped talking about you ever since he got back” Mamie confesses. Dash blushes and it makes me giggle since I’d never seen him blush.
“I’m glad I came too, I really enjoyed the meal and just being here has given me some closure.” I reply. I help Mamie clear the table and clean the dishes. As I am busy packing away the dishes, I overhear Dash and Uncle D having a chat. “So are you dating Alexis now?” He asks Dash. “Dad, let’s not go there” Dash replies. “Well, it will be good for you, taking after your brother, you know that he would have wanted you to be happy” his dad continues. “We’ve decided to take it slow, nothing serious dad, I don’t want to force her into anything, and it’s entirely up to her who she wants to be with. Maybe it’s not even me that she wants” Dash continues. Uncle D pats Dash on the shoulder and doesn’t speak again. When I am done cleaning, I decide to take a walk around the house and look through all the pictures. David was really handsome, all his pictures showed his wonderful smile. Dash always seemed to be in the background.
I stand there looking through the pictures, then Uncle D comes and stands beside me. “We miss him a lot” he says as he places his hand on my shoulder. I just smile. “Come, I want to show you something” he continues. He leads me to a back room, which is filled with various items. I guess it’s a storeroom of some kind. He pulls out a box which is labelled ’David’s things’ and opens it. Inside the box is a few clothing items and objects that belonged to David. One item in particular, I notice and remember is his favourite leather jacket. I pull it out and put it on. I can feel David as I wear it, as if he’s right there holding me. I feel comforted at that moment. Uncle D pulls a little box from between all the clothing. “Ah, here it is” he says as he hands it to me. I look a bit confused at him. “Open it. David asked me to keep it in a safe place until he needed it. But I am sure he would want you to have it” he responds to my quizzical expression.
I open the box and it’s a beautiful white gold engagement ring with a blue sapphire stone. I stand there gaping and stumble backwards against the wall. I can’t believe my eyes, it’s amazing. “I don’t know what to say” I finally speak. “You don’t have to say anything my dear.” Uncle D replies. “Perhaps this should be given to Dash when he proposes” I say sadly handing the box back. “Propose?” Dash enters at that moment and looks baffled at what we’re doing. “What’s in the box?” he jokes. I hand the box to him and he opens it. “Wow, where did this come from?” he asks. “It belonged to David, he asked me to hold on to it” Uncle D replies. “I thought I would give it to Alexis, since I think he was going to anyway.” He continues with a chuckle. “Then you should keep it Lexi. You can add it to your chain, close to your heart” Dash suggests.
We spend the rest of the afternoon in the patio while Uncle D is resting in his room. Mamie decides that she too needed an afternoon rest so Dash and I remain. “It’s nice having you here for a change.” Dash says as he takes my hand in his. “I’m happy I came” I reply. I decide finally that it’s time for me to leave. I greet his parent’s good-bye and Dash walks me to my car. “So . . . have a good night Lexi” Dash says as he opens my car door. “Thanks Dash” I reply. He leans forward to kiss me, but I turn my face as his parents are still standing at the door. “Oh. Sorry” he says as he notices them still standing there and kisses me on the cheek instead.
I laid in bed playing with the ring and cry myself to sleep.
