Mystery / Romance

A few hours later, after revealing his dream to his friends, he couldn’t stress enough how important it was not to tell anyone about the dream or about William and Angela Douglas, both involved in the investigation into covert operations within the CIA and the Company. They understood.

Exhausted and with a heavy heart, they headed home. During the cab ride, they had some time to talk and Lisa decided to discuss more important matters, but was it the right time?

She took his hand. “I’m sorry,” Lisa said.

“Why are you apologizing? I should apologize to you.” He knew how much it hurt to see him like that, vulnerable and upset.

“No, I’m sorry that you had to go through that. I knew what it could mean, but you were determined to do it, so fearless and brave, that I went along with it. I wanted it to end; same as you. I want us to move forward and think about our future together.”

“I don’t understand; I want that too. What are you trying to say?”

“While you were sleeping, I thought about us meeting and falling in love. You were always confident and courageous, and I saw it from our first assignment.”

He ducked his head. “To be honest, I wanted to impress you.”

“Oh, you did very much so, but then you left to ‘rescue’ Mark, but you didn’t come back. While you were gone, all I wanted was to tell you, but then you came home, and now,” she hesitated.

“And now?”

“We’re here folks!” The cabbie announced.

Steve groaned and inwardly cursed a blue streak. Once inside their apartment, Lisa fussed over him; helped him into bed; fluffed his pillows; fixed him a cup of soup; and hot tea. Was she avoiding me? He wondered. In bed, all tucked in and ready to finish their talk, he grabbed her arm.

“Sit down and finish telling me what you were going to say.”

“You should eat first. The doctor was very specific about that, and besides, it can wait,” she replied.

“Lisa, tell me now!”

She sighed and sat down. “I truly don’t know how to say this.”

“Just tell me.”

“While you were gone, I went off the pill.”

“Oh, wow, and, are you pregnant?”

“I think so. I missed my period the other day. I’m sure it happened in Germany.”

“Lisa, that’s wonderful.” His eyes watered. “You have to take the test to make sure.”

“It’s too soon; I can’t take the test not right away, and not for three weeks.”

“Three weeks?!”

“I’m sorry; I shouldn’t have told you. It’s just, I missed you so much and I forgot to take the pill and I know we didn’t plan this, and,” she rambled.

He stopped her with a kiss. She kissed him back. After a minute, he pulled away, foreheads touching. “I love you.”

She smiled through her tears. “I love you too.” She picked up his soup. “Finish it.”

He chuckled. “Yes, Madam.”

She smiled and watched him eat.

Meanwhile, in the bustling city of New York, two men, with a lot to lose, sat on a park bench eating lunch, but to look at them, you would think they were just friends, enjoying a meal, but it wasn’t that simple.

“Where is he?” The first one asked.

“He’s at home recuperating,” the second one replied.

“I don’t like this. All of our work for the past year is turning into 20 years in prison.’

“Don’t bust a blood vessel. It’s not over yet.”

“You can’t kidnap him again; that won’t work.”

“I have another one.”

“Another agent. Apparently, he was on that mission to capture Mark, but he was hurt and there were complications. He’s home now, and we will get what we need.”

“I hope so. I’m ready to retire.”

Minutes later, they parted ways.

“Did you get that?” One agent asked.

“Yeah, we got it,” the other one replied.

Earlier that morning, after speaking with Lisa and Steve about his dreams and the ongoing investigation into collusion and extortion within the Company, they needed to update Jeff. He’s been entirely out of the loop and they couldn’t do it over the phone.

His wife answered the door and immediately recognized her husband’s friends. “Brad, Katie; what a surprise.”

“It’s good to see you, Anne, is Jeff awake,” Brad asked.

“Yes, he’s awake and ready to get back to work. Come in.”

“Thanks, Anne,” Katie said. “Are the kids in school?”

“Yes, they are,” she replied.

“Jeff, you have visitors,” Anne announced and opened the door. Jeff was at the computer, working.

“That didn’t take long,” Brad said and shook his hand. “No, don’t get up.”

“What are you two doing here? Not that I’m not happy to see you,” Jeff asked.

“We needed to update you about everything that’s been going on. It’s important.”

“I’ll let you guys talk,” Anne said.

“Thanks, honey,” Jeff said. “Take a seat.”

They sat down in several chairs. “If your faces are any indication, it’s bad?”

“Yeah, it is,” Brad replied. “I’m not sure where to start,” he began.

“Just start where it all started, after Jeff was taken to the hospital,” Katie suggested.

“Okay, it’s been several months, but Steve is back home; he’s safe.”

“Yes, I know that. My wife told me you called.”

“Once we had a chance to talk about not only the mission to rescue Mark, but our efforts to bring Steve home; all of it seemed to form a pattern.”

“A pattern of what exactly?”

“Steve and your abilities have come into play, and not in a good way.”

He nodded. “I get it; it’s the fact that we both can see the future?”

“Yes, we think and a few other people who’ve been investigating the CIA and the Company, believe that your abilities are being extorted to find out about future technology,” Brad explained.

“In our dreams; is that what you’re talking about?”

“Yes, but it hasn’t happened, and the kidnapping and extortion could continue if we don’t catch who could be behind it,” Katie replied.

’Do you have any idea who is behind it?” Jeff asked.

“Yes, we do, but we can’t tell you; not yet. But know this, there are people outside and outside of the Company who’ve been investigating all of it for over a year.”

“And you can’t tell me who they are?”

“I see no reason not to tell him,” Katie said.

“All of this could come to a head very soon now. Their names are William and Angela Douglas,” Brad finally replied.

“Angela Douglas? I’ve heard of her; she’s an attorney famous for that mob case earlier this year?” Jeff thoughtfully asked.

“Yes, and her husband is with the FBI.”

“The FBI is investigating? Wow, this is getting pretty heavy.”

A knock came at the door, then Anne entered and shut the door. “Jeff, there are two federal Agents downstairs and they need to speak with you,” she whispered, getting a bad feeling about them.

“What are their names?”

“Sam Jones and Bert Young?”

“Oh no!” Brad exclaimed.

“It’s them?” Jeff asked.

“Yes, but if you leave with them, we may never see you again,” Katie warned.

“Jeff, what’s going on?” Anne asked, heart pounding seriously concerned.

“Do they know I’m here?” Jeff asked his wife.

“Yes, I told them you were resting.”

“It’s alright. Tell them that I took a sleeping pill and I can’t be awakened. If they insist, tell them that I’ll call as soon as I wake up.”

“Alright, I’ll take care of it,” Anne said then shut the door.

“Brad and I will wait in the kid’s room just in case they decide to come up here. You lay down. Turn off the computer,” Katie instructed, then they managed to hide.

Minutes later, Anne could be heard explaining to the Agents that her husband was in a deep sleep and can’t be awakened. The doctor insisted. He had almost lost his arm.

They decided to leave. She apologized and showed them out. Brad and Lisa stood by the window and heard the car drive off.

Back in Jeff’s room, he was very upset. “Now tell me everything,” he stated firmly.

And they did.

Back in Steve and Lisa’s apartment:

Lisa came into their bedroom to collect the dishes, but the look on his face gave her pause. “Who was that on the phone?”

“It was Brad and things are out of control. Give me that card from William Douglas.” She handed him the card. “You won’t believe what just happened. Talk about bold: Sam Jones and Bert Young actually tried to pick up Jeff from his home and take him in.”

“What?! They must know the truth about him.”

“Yes, I could be next.”

He dialed the number. “William Douglas; this is Steve Gilbert.”

“Yes, Mr. Gilbert, I’ve been waiting for your call. We have news.”

“I have news, but you go first. The call is on speaker. My wife is here.”

“Hello, Lisa. Well, Jones and Young were followed a little while ago, and they were in a park bench talking about their covert operation. They were followed to Jeff James residence, where they tried to abduct him.”

“We know about that because our friends were there when it happened.”

“Well, we have them in custody.”

“You do?” Lisa asked, stunned.

“Yes, we have them.”

“But do you have enough evidence to convict them?”

“Oh, we have plenty, plus, we have witnesses: You, Lisa, Jeff, Brad, Katie, Mark, and Bobby.”

“Wait, Bobby and Mark, but how?” Lisa asked.

“Mark was brought back to the states and kept in a very secure location. As soon as we found out that Bert had traveled to Germany, we had people there to follow him. After he took Bobby from the hotel, we retrieved Bobby from Bert. He wasn’t happy about it, but there was nothing he could do.”

“So, that’s it? It’s over?” Steve asked.

“It will be once we turn over all the evidence to Mrs. Douglas; she is quite famous,” he replied with pride in his voice.

“Yes, she is,” Steve agreed.

“We don’t know what to say,” Lisa said and took her husband’s hand.

“Just be happy guys,” Bill said.

“Thank you, Bill,” Lisa said, truly grateful.

“Bye, Bill,” Steve said and hung up. “Well, talk about timing; we have it.”

“Yeah, we do,” she said, and picked up the dishes.

“Hey, is something wrong?”

“I can’t stop thinking about what you told me... the dream.” He didn’t respond, so she turned and headed to the kitchen.

“Lisa, wait!” Steve jumped out of bed, but he stood up too quickly. “Argh!” He touched his forehead and almost fell over.

“Steve, what’s wrong?” She helped him to sit down.

“My head is pounding.”

“The doctor said you may experience a headache. He left me a few pills; I’ll get them.” She pulled them from her purse.

“Thanks, sweetie.”

“Here, take these.” He took the pills and lay back down.

She covered him up and stroked his forehead and kissed his cheek. “It should be gone in a few minutes, and stay in bed.”

He smiled. “Yes, Madam.”

“Close your eyes; that’s it.” She stroked his forehead again.

Hours later in a very deep sleep:

I can see myself walking through a mist that slows my movements, but once the mist had cleared, it’s a nursery and I hear a cry. It’s a baby; my baby? I pick up the infant and wondered if it’s a boy or a girl. I hear her voice: Look, who’s awake. He’s hungry, Steve, I’ll take him. Lisa? Lisa?

“Steve, Steve, wake up!” She shook his shoulder.

“Oh, I’m awake.” He blinked and looked around.

“Are you looking for something?”

“No, I have everything I need,” he replied, and pulled her into his arms and kissed her passionately; she kissed him back enjoying it, but only for a minute.

“Someone is in a mood. I guess your headache is gone?”

He frowned. “How long was I asleep?”

She glanced at the clock. “Well, it’s 2am now; eight hours.”

“Eight hours?!”

“Yes, I couldn’t wake you.”

“I guess I needed the rest.”

“You really did.”

“I’m rested so,” he whispered and tried to kiss her again.

“Hold on; we can’t rush these things.”

“I’m not rushing anything.”

“Steve, the doctor said,” she started, but he kissed her.

She gave in, but only for a minute. She pushed him away.

He sighed and lay back down.

“You really need to rest. The doctor said.”

He rolled his eyes. “Lisa, I know my own body; I’m ready for sex.”

She chuckled.

“It’s not funny.”

“I’m sorry, but I’m trying not to think about… that thing we haven’t discussed.”

“I’m not ready to talk about that.”

“I understand, so we won’t talk about it, but please just give it a day or two, and we can have lots of sex. You don’t want another headache at the worst possible time; do you?” She raised her eyebrows.

“No, I don’t.” He turned on his side, his back to her, and tried to get comfortable.

“Please don’t be mad.” She paused and kissed his cheek. “I love you, Steve.”

“I love you too.”

Morning came, and they had to check in at the office. It’s probably chaos over there. In the kitchen fixing Steve’s breakfast, she turned on the television, but kept the volume low as not to wake him, then she turned on the cable news, and there it was:

This is Connie Madison, coming to you live outside the FBI headquarters in New York City, where an Indictment was filed this morning in the U.S. District Court in the Southern District of New York. Per our sources, the Indictment states that two high ranking officials within the U.S. National Intelligence Agency were arrested, charged with conducting covert operations, including kidnapping, extortion, and other major crimes against federal Agents in their attempts to extort ‘top’ secret information; and to either sell or distribute said information for personal gain. If convicted, they could face 20 years to life in prison. The Indictment has not been made public. Once released, we will bring it to you live on this channel. We will keep you updated in the hours and weeks ahead. We now return to our studio.

“Well, that about covers it,” Steve whispered and picked up a strip of bacon.

“Yeah, Sam and Bert are not that young and their families must be devastated.”

“I’m sure they kept it a secret,” Steve commented. They stared at each other. “They are not like us.”

“I know,” she said. “Are you hungry?”

“Starved,” he replied.

“Eat up. You need it.”

“Thanks, honey. About last night, I’m sorry.”

“Please don’t apologize. I understand. You were tired, not thinking clearly, plus I had a lot on my mind too.”

“Yeah, you were right. This is so good. Thanks for this.”

Her cell phone rang. “You’re welcome. Hey, Brad. You saw the news?”

“Yeah, I did. How’s Steve?”

“He’s eating, and feeling much better.” She handed him the phone.

“Hey, Brad; yeah, I saw it.”

“What do you think will happen to them?”

“I’m not sure. I don’t remember anything like this ever happening before.”

“I don’t either, but I suppose corruption is possible, no matter where it is.”

“I know, but it’s awful to think about the trust that’s broken, not to mention the time that was lost; it can’t be returned.” He glanced at Lisa.

“Yeah, but we will get past this.”

“We will.”

“I’ll talk to you later. Bye Steve.”

“Bye, Brad.”

“Are you Okay?” Lisa asked.

“I’m alright, but I’m not hungry anymore.”

“Do you want to head into the office; check in?”

“Sure, we can go together to show a united front.”

She smiled. “Sounds good.”

A few hours later, at the office, Steve and Lisa walked in, hand in hand. “Where is everyone?” Lisa asked.

Alice, Lisa’s assistant, walked over to them. “Hey guys, welcome back.”

“What’s going on?” Steve asked.

“Cleaning house?”

“What do you mean?” Lisa asked.

“Not everyone was in the dark about Bert. I had no idea, but,” she let that hang.

“How many?” Steve asked.

“Ten staffers and a few more executives.”

“That’s crazy!”

“I hear you,” Alice agreed. “How long can you stay?”

“A few hours, at the most,” Lisa replied.

“Well, I guess we still have our jobs, but I’m not sure,” Alice thoughtfully said.

“It will take a while to clear all of this up, but I’m not worried about our jobs,” Steve hopefully said.

“We may be reassigned or moved to another office?” Lisa asked.

“Another office?” Alice did not like that idea. “I love New York.”

“We do too. Let’s get to work,” Steve said.

“Okay,” Alice said and went back to her desk.

An hour later, and after checking in with a few staffers, they were notified of a meeting to introduce their new boss. They walked in and managed to find two seats together. A few minutes later, William Douglas made his way to the podium and shook hands with his boss, and several other staffers who seemed pleased to meet him.

“William is our new boss?” Lisa asked, thrilled and excited to be working with him.

“It certainly looks that way, but does he have any experience?”

“I’m not sure. He joined the FBI about a year ago, but he did crack the case wide open, and I guess this is his reward.”

“He definitely earned it,” Steve said.

“Everyone, please take a seat,” Agent Saunders said, third in command, under Bert.

“Well, things have been a bit crazy around here since yesterday. As you may know, Bert Young is no longer with us; neither is Samuel Jones. They were arrested and will face criminal charges. In the meantime, we have work to do and I’m pleased to announce that William Douglas, Special Agent to the Head of the Department of Criminal Justice at the FBI, is now the Head Agent here at the Company. Please welcome Bill.

“Thank you, Agent Saunders.” After the applause died down, Bill had a few words to say. “Thank you for that warm welcome. I’m happy to accept the position of Head Agent here at the Company. My background in criminal justice in New York for the past 15 years has enabled me to see many facets of this city, good and bad. I will accept nothing less than the best from you and you will accept nothing less from me. Please feel free to come and see me if you have any questions or concerns. I think it best that I touch briefly on what happened here yesterday. As head Investigator on the case, it was my job to find out the truth. Believe me when I say, that I will always search for the truth, no matter who they are or what your position. You will not escape justice. Now, let’s get to work.

Everyone stood up and clapped. After the meeting, he stood by and shook everyone’s hand and thanked them for accepting him and he looked forward to working with the entire staff.

“Lisa, it’s good to see you,” Bill greeted her warmly. She hugged him for a moment.

“Bill, this is my husband, Steve.” They shook hands.

“Nice to meet you, Bill, and under such unique circumstances.”

“Nice to meet you too.” He glanced around. “Can we speak in private for a minute.”

Lisa and Steve glanced at each other. “Of course,” Lisa replied. They followed him down the hall to a small conference room.

“This is going to sound odd, but I know why Sam and Bert targeted you,” Bill stated without preamble.

“Oh, is that going to come out in court?”

“Maybe, but I’ve stressed to my wife to keep it anonymous, but it may not happen.”

“That’s unfortunate,” Lisa said.

“I understand because… Angie and I can relate to what you’ve been through.”

Lisa gasped and so did Steve.

“Are you?” Lisa couldn’t finish.

“Yes, my wife and I share a lot of traits, as it were,” Bill said with a smile.

“Well, maybe we can form a club, as it were?” Lisa suggested and smiled at her husband.

“I wouldn’t go that far,” Steve said.

They all laughed, enjoying their rather odd connection.
