The Words Of No One

“I'll begin this story with a clarification. This is a fictional story.

As such, all the characters mentioned in it are works of complete fiction, and any resemblances to real life people and or places are a complete coincidence.

That being said, allow me to discredit myself right away. After all, I’ve already begun this story, and if I'm in it, then I, too, am a work of fiction, and therefore whatever I say can't be taken at face value.

I suppose this is what could be called a paradox.

If a liar were to say “I am lying right now.” Just like that, with no other context, would that be true or false?

The answer of course, is that it can't be either true or false.

If that sentence was a lie, then it would make the liar’s sentence true, in which case, he was lying and the sentence once again becomes false.

No correct answer exists to the question.

But, speaking as a fictional entity, perhaps I can find one.

Since I am not bound by the chains of a nonfiction reality, perhaps a world can be created where these non existential answers to the unanswerable questions can be found.

Of course, even if I did find such answers, it would mean nothing, as I am, after all, fictional. In a world where confines and rules exist, this theoretical answer would be impossible, and therefore rejected by the world.

Now then, I believe it will be best to clarify something else at this point.

This story’s events may not necessarily be in chronological order. While each event will progress in a forward fashion for the most part, the order of events will not move in such a way.

Of course, I've previously disclosed that since I'm fictional myself, what I've just said may all be nothing more than me wasting up time. Of course, if I am, I've picked an interesting way to do it.

If I'm not however, what point must I be trying to make?

Could it be that I'm already closing in on one of those theoretical answers that don't existent within the confines of reality?

I'm sure those who are alert noticed that I am in fact speaking this, as part of some speech perhaps, even if it is directed towards nobody in particular, but that detail is not important, at least in my opinion anyway. Regardless of this supposed observer’s skill, I pose one final question before the story begins, and before I disappear from existence in the very world I'm about to create, before it is even created.

I've previously stated that, as I am now, I cannot be trusted. I hold by that statement. Which makes my question a simple one really:

Am I lying? Or am I telling the truth?

If one pays attention, the answer should become apparent.”
