Short Story

I lay awake in bed, unable to get back to sleep. I can't stop thinking about him! I can't stop thinking of his long black cape, his knee high boots, his... his headless body, and his head which he carries in his hands. Every time I shut my eyes, I hear his evil laugh, which just wakes me up again. Who is he, and why is he haunting me?

What was that? Dear God, there’s something outside my bedroom door! It sounds like something or someone hitting a chair out in the dining room. I sink deeper beneath my sheets, trying my best to hide. I hear my bedroom door slowly creak open. It’s him!

I try my best to hide from him. My heart is beating a hundred mile a second, my eyes are tightly shut, and my teeth are beginning to chatter. Never have I in my whole life been so scared. I hear him walk through my bedroom, right up to the side of my bed. I can sense he is close, like if he is just above me. I begin to grind my teeth together, to prevent him from noticing I was here. I remain as still as I can, and as quiet as a mouse. Beads of sweat are dropping from my pale white skin, drenching my sheets.

I suddenly hear him snuff like a horse, and begin to walk out of my room. I hear my bedroom door close slowly and he was gone, I think. Still I hide beneath my sheets, knowing he would soon be back as soon as I thought it would be safe. All I hear now is the pattering sound of rain on my window, combined with the thunderstorm that is raging on outside, like a steam train roaring out a tunnel.

I once heard of him in folklore, but I didn't think we would be like that. I thought we were the country that sent our criminals to the gallows, not the one who would chop their heads off medieval style. I continue to lay there; still unable to get back to sleep, afraid he might come back again…

Matthias Hehn: Well written, could hardly put it down. The story is not too far fetched, a drug that messes up basic human emotions, and the effects on people and society as a whole. Hope there will be another book in the same style

SeanSavage: Good plot that moves fairly quickly. Time passage somewhat vague. but not indecipherable. Very good syntax, grammar and punctuation. The story flowed very well, however, the breaks between chapters and the time jumps tended to be slightly confusing at first. I could see where the author was going...

Aditya Harikrish: It had me on tenterhooks since the very first page. Excllently developed plot and characters. You've done an amazing job of building a fantasy world from scratch. Hats off to you!A sequel is a must.

William Elliott Kern: Long story, the plot uncovered midway through the story. From beginning, the story was fast moving. Then dragged on for quite some time. The Author was good in describing her characters, their clothing, etc. but a lot of that disclosure distracted from the story moving fast. Not withstanding, the...

Sammy Styles: It is one of those stories that keeps you on the hook till the last moment. A roll of pictures were piling up and with continuous moving, it was like I was watching a film. The scenes were dramatic with a bit of every emotion. The story contains every essence of mystery, romance and adventur...

Andrea Norton: This story was so well put together. It was suspenseful, the storyline flowed perfectly and it was full of interesting twists and turns. I found myself getting very involved in the story and read it in just a few hours. I'd really like to read more of this author's work!

Victoria Lovett: I really enjoyed reading this. The ending was a very nice twist. I never expected that. Overall this has been one of the best books I've read in a long while. Excellent work. I would buy this as a real book instead of just one on my phone if I had the chance.

iann4701: I'm no expert but I know when I have read a good book and this was one. From the beginning it had me wondering where it was going next and what the outcome would be. If you fancy a read with a slightly different perspective from the norm then I would certainly give this book a read. I will look o...

danijelstoilkovic: I really like this story. The characters, the mysteries, that bonding in the end, but I would really like to see what happened next. Is there a second part? And this would really be one cool horror movie and if I was the director, I wouldn't change a thing. It's awesome!

MusketeerAdventure: Well - I really enjoyed this very much! The whole idea of a shared haunting really intrigues me. I thought you did a wonderful job; and I really liked the idea of hearing from the first ghost's point of view. It would be interesting to read more about these two - and the ghost-busters that inf...
