At Marathon High School, I am probably the most unpopular seventeen year old girl, aside from the creepy girl who talks to herself and doesn’t bathe.
I have long blonde hair that hangs down to my waist, that no one ever sees because I always tie it up in a bun. I have an athletic, curvy build that could be viewed as hot, but I keep it hidden away under over-all’s and heavy sweat shirts. I have bright violet eyes that nobody ever sees because I always have my nose stuck in one book or another and I’m usually very quiet at school.
I’ve never been asked out, never mind kissed or even acknowledged in public by any type of guy.
I don’t even really care.
I have a secret.
You see, my family heads a very powerful coven of witches called the Wyld Moon Circle. (Try explaining that to modern day teenagers!) Our family have carried witch blood since the Arthurian days. Our family are royal by blood, and so, I am quite literally a princess - but I prefer to be called priestess.
There is another royal blooded family that is still alive today. They head Circle Twilight, the next most powerful Circle in the world with blood as rich in magick as ours.
I have another secret.
In just less than a month, I would take part in a Hand Fasting ceremony - a marriage in all legal standing - that would bond our two families together once and for all, creating the most powerful Circle that ever existed.
I have never met the boy I will be married off to. I can only hope that he will be good to me. I am a higher station than he is, but just barely. Even so, our magickal world is heavily matriarchal and so I can only pray that he doesn’t care if he’s asked to step back and let me lead. Some of the men that had married into the royal bloodlines had cracked under the pressure of being a shadow in the wake of a Queen High Priestess. They even went as far trying to kill their wives in the hopes of taking her place. Foolish really. What with all the spells that protect the QHP, it’s no wonder the men find themselves cursed or worse.
School starts again in two weeks. My grade twelve year. The only thing I look forward to is that I might be able to have my new husband… whoever he is, take me to the school dances!
