Chapter 24

“Our complexity is much more to lead us astray than any simplicity we may follow.” - Roger Kimball

CLARA

Lucy pulls up at Sam’s party and we get out of the car. It feels good to get out of our cramped positions and stretch. We only had Lucy’s car due to the fact that Layne doesn’t have a car, and Harriet’s car was out of fuel - thanks to Nick taking it and going for a little joy ride.

That means that I had to sit on top of someone, and it wasn’t going to be Nick. Harriet was in front seat, Lucy was driving, Zeke was curled up on his seat, and Nick just wasn’t an option. That meant that I had to sit on Layne, and boy was that awkward.

“Stay with Layne,” Harriet says.

“Don’t do anything stupid,” Zeke adds.

“Layne, don’t get drunk,” Lucy warns.

Nick doesn’t say anything and they almost melt into the crowd around them. Layne grabs my hand and pulls me through the crowd, keeping me close to him. We are almost through the massive crowd when someone pulls me away from Layne and into a hug. I look up and grin. Jeremy.

“Hey, Jer,” I greet.

“Why are you here?” Jeremy asks, chuckling.

“Zeke and Layne said this will help.”

“Help you end up with a hangover.”

“That too.”

“Jer!” Layne calls over the music.

“Hey, Layne,” Jeremy says.

“Have you seen - Clara!”

“Sorry, Layne,” I say.

“Don’t run off. Harriet will kill me.”

“Sorry, Layne.”

“Let’s go.”

Layne grabs my hand and I follow him through the crowd. He pulls me into an empty room and hands me a cup filled with...coke? I frown at him and he shrugs. I take a sip of the coke and it burns my throat slightly.

“What the hell?” I exclaim, shock rolling through my voice. "I thought you would have been making me stay sober to look after you idiots."

“It’s only rum and coke,” Layne explains. "What they don't know won't hurt them.”

“Okay.”

“How are you feeling?”

“Fine. Why?”

“Some people can’t handle any alcohol.”

“Well, I’m not ‘some people’.”

“No, you’re not. You’re you and I know what you’re like.”

“Not the completely drunk me.”

“I’ll know soon.”

“I hope I’m not a bad drunk.”

“I hope not.”

Layne drinks the rest of his drink and grins at me. I follow suit and everything starts to feel better, calmer almost. Layne gets us more drinks and is soon muttering about how it seems that Harriet doesn’t even notice him anymore and I am telling him things that I never even told Harriet.

“I’m surprised,” Layne says.

“Why?” I ask.

“Hari, Luce and Zeke were almost passed out after five and this is your...what?”

“Seventh or eighth.”

“Nick passed out after four and Jer is on six, I think.”

“Nick would have had something stronger than rum and coke.”

“Yeah.”

“How many have you had?”

“Six or seven.”

“I thought you weren’t allowed to get drunk?”

“Luce won’t remember this tomorrow.”

“That’ll make it worse.”

“Actually, I think Luce took the others home.”

“Speaking of home, Layne...”

“Yeah. We better go.”

Layne calls a taxi and I hunt for Jeremy. I find him almost out on the floor and I help him up before almost dragging him outside. I can see Layne waiting for us and I drag Jeremy to Layne. We pile into the cab and Layne tells the driver our address. A familiar songs starts on the radio and we all start singing - off-key of course.

I was walking away,
But she’s so beautiful it made me stay
I don’t know her name,
But I’m hoping she might feel the same
So here I go again,
She got my heart again!

Tonight we’ll dance
I’ll be yours and you’ll be mine
We won’t look back,
Take my hand and we will shine
Oh, oh, oh
She needs a wild heart
She needs a wild heart
I got a wild heart

Stay here, my dear,
Feels like I’ve been standing right here for years
My mind’s beat up
Tell me that you feel this, and I won’t give up
I won’t give up

Tonight we’ll dance
I’ll be yours and you’ll be mine
We won’t look back,
Take my hand and we will shine
Oh, oh, oh
She needs a wild heart
She needs a wild heart
I got a wild heart
Oh, oh, oh
She needs a wild heart
She needs a wild heart
I got a wild heart

And I know it’s late, I know it’s cold
But come right here, I swear I’ll never let you go
The way you move, it’s wonderful
Let’s do it now, ’cause one day we’ll both be old
Oh whoa oh

Tonight we’ll dance
I’ll be yours and you’ll be mine
We won’t look back,
Take my hand and we will shine
Oh, oh, oh
She needs a wild heart
She needs a wild heart
I got a wild heart

Tonight we’ll dance
I’ll be yours and you’ll be mine
We won’t look back,
Take my hand and we will shine
Oh, oh, oh
She needs a wild heart
She needs a wild heart
I got a wild heart
Oh, oh, oh
She needs a wild heart
She needs a wild heart
I’ve got a wild heart

Ten minutes later we are walking inside and trying to figure out a place for Jeremy to sleep. We end up laying him on the mattress in my room and him passing out instantly. I put a bucket next to every bed and some painkillers and water on the cupboards.

The rest of the night passes in a blur and it’s about midnight when Layne and I head up to bed. Whatever happens after that is too hazy to focus on and it doesn’t seem to be of any importance to Lou and I.

Oh, how I hate being wrong...
