I hear every word that Clara and Nick are share in the bathroom. I slide down the wall and Clara’s story replays over and over in my head. He beat me until I could hardly move. He left me there to die. My father burned me. I was twelve, Nick.

“Clean up,” Nick orders. “I’ll wait in your room.”

He walks out of the bathroom and closes the door. He falls onto his mattress and sighs. I let out a shaky breath and his head snaps up. He sees me sitting near the bathroom door and walks over to me. He crouches down in front of me and pushes my longish hair out of my face, his eyes widening when he sees my tears.

“Layne?” Nick asks.

I nod.

“How much did you hear?”

“All of it.”

“Layne...” He pulls me into a hug.

“Nick?” Clara asks. “Who’s crying?”

I look up.

“Clara...” I trail off.

“How much did you hear?”

“All of it.”

“Hell, Layne.”

She falls down next to me and pulls me into a hug. I sob and my tears soak her shirt. Nick pulls us into one of his giant hugs and he starts crying heavily. We sit like this for what feels like hours before Harriet comes in.

“Layne? Nick? Clara?” Harriet asks. “What’s going on?”

“What do you think, Harriet?” Clara asks.

“You better not be pregnant.”

“I’m not. Guess again.”

“You didn’t.”

“They know.”

“I trust very few people, Harriet.”

“That still-”

“You know why.”

“I know. Remember what happened last time?”

“Nick and Layne are nothing like that bitch.”

“What happened?” Nick asks.

“Back in Cheshire, a friend found out and she told the whole school Clara was a monster.”

“We’d never do that,” I say.

“Good.” Clara says.

“I guess you should tell Zeke and Luce,” Nick suggests.

“You might want to wait until tomorrow,” Harriet mutters, her face going red.

I groan. “They aren’t. Tell me they aren’t.”

“I hope not.”

“In the rumpass room?” Clara asks.

“Bathroom. Rumpass bathroom.”

“Seven Minutes In Heaven?”

“Harriet,” Nick and Clara groan.

“Zeke dared Luce. I didn’t do anything.”

“I guess you’re in the clear,” Nick sighs.
