Chapter 8: Drake's Birthday (part one)
Rebbeca rolled over in her bed, and grabbed her cell phone from her night stand. “Hello?” she said, rubbing her eyes.
“Were you…sleeping?” Abigail asked, on the other end.
“Because you said you’d call me three hours ago.”
“What time is it?”
“Kern.” She sat up. “I slept in.”
Rebbeca walked over to her desk, put her phone on speaker, and set it down.
“What are your plans for today?”
“Right now, all I know is that it’s Drake’s birthday.” She slipped on a pair of jeans and a new shirt. “We usually go out, but sometimes we spend the day watching TV. Have you talked to him?”
“Yeah, his dad is taking him to Riverstone to take a driving test,” Abigail said, as Rebbeca put her hair in a ponytail. “And, we’re not supposed to plan anything before three.”
“Sounds good. What should we get him?”
“I haven’t known him as long as you so…you pick.”
“Okay, I’ll be there in about twenty minutes.” Rebbeca heard Abigail hang up. Then, she put her phone in her pocket.
Dark Rose walked into the old Cougar Shipping warehouse, the same one as the night before. She walked into the main room, and saw the silhouettes of three people standing in front of her. “I’m here. Just like you said.”
“Good,” Retsacnal said. “What is your weapon?”
“I just have a hand gun…”
“What are you good at?”
“Weapons and boxing.”
“Can you hold your own in a fight?”
She stood up straight. “I believe so, yes. What’s with all the questions?” The door opened and two people walked into the room. They walked over and stood next to Dark Rose.
“Dark Rose, meet your new partners, Oystra and Card Shark,” he told her. “But most people know them as Samantha Jordon and Danny Habanero.”
Rebbeca pulled into Abigail’s driveway in her dad’s old jeep. She parked in front of the garage and shut off the car. As she got out, she saw Sam walking from his house to Abigail’s. She closed the door, reached through the window, and grabbed her bag.
“About the other day…” Rebbeca said, as she walked over to him. “I know it may not have sounded like it, but I wasn’t trying to be mean.” She watched as he looked off into the distance. “I’ve been told it just comes naturally.”
He smiled and looked at her. “So, I’ve heard.” he replied. They started walking toward Abigail’s house.
“So, are we cool?”
“Yeah,” he chuckled. “You better get over there. I don’t think Abigail will wait much longer.”
“Probably not.” She smiled. “See you later.” Rebbeca walked up to the front door and knocked.
“Come in,” she heard Abigail yell, from somewhere inside. Rebbeca opened the door and walked in.
“Abby?” She shut the door behind her.
“Hey.” Abigail came around the corner. “Well, it’s about time.”
“Yeah, I know.”
They walked over to the couch.
“So, about Drake…what are we doing?” Abigail asked, as they sat down.
“We could just order pizza and hang out.”
“Sure, why not?”
“And as for a gift…what do you think?”
“All I know is that he’s a science geek.”
“Well, he loves two things,” Rebbeca said, “science and comics. But if you ask me, he’d like science stuff more.”
“I know this is totally off the subject, but is there something going on between you two?”
“I don’t think so, why?”
“I don’t know. You guys just seem like there’s a wall between you.”
Rebbeca knows what Abigail is trying to get at, and she wishes she’d stop. Rebbeca and Drake’s relationship hasn’t been the same for a year or two. “It’s nothing. I think I know what we can get Drake.”
“What if we bought a lab for him?”
“That…” Abigail said, “is perfect.” She quickly stood and left the room.
“Partners?” Dark Rose gasped, as she looked at Oystra and Card Shark.
“Do you have a problem with that?” Retsacnal asked.
“Yes, I do.”
“Well, get over it. If you want revenge on Dark Vengeance, you will have partners.”
“I can find her on my own.”
“But will that keep your father out of jail? Or better yet, alive?”
“Are you threatening me?”
“Do you understand?”
She replied with a slight nod.
“Good.” He looked at the others. “Girls, wait in the next room.” Oystra and Dark Rose looked at each other before leaving.
“About the other night-” Card Shark began.
“Why didn’t you return home with the others?”
“I…was,” he looked up at Retsacnal, “following a lead on my parents.” Card Shark knew if he told the truth, that he was with a girl, he’d be in a lot of trouble. So, in this case, he had to lie.
“What have I told you in the past? Your parents are gone, Danny. They’re not coming back.”
“Wow, you’re so up lifting.”
“How do you know they’re not coming back? How do you know I won’t find them?”
“You’re not listening to me.”
“Why should I?”
“I need you to stop your pity party and grow up. I have a very important job for you.”
“What is it this time?” he asked.
“I want you to be the leader of my new team.”
“Oystra and Dark Rose, under your leadership, with the help of anyone else you can find,” Retsacnal told him. He could tell Card Shark was interested. “Dark Vengeance won’t stand a chance. So, what do you say?”
“When do I start?”
“So, we’re a team?” Dark Rose asked.
“Yeah, we are.” Card Shark walked into the room. “So you better start acting like it.”
“What did he say?” Oystra asked him, as they sat down around a card table.
“Well, this room is our new headquarters, and I’m our leader.”
“And you don’t look too happy about it.”
“It’s not that.”
“So, now what?” Dark Rose asked.
“Well, maybe we can make something good out of something bad…?” Oystra suggested.
“Like what?” Dark Rose scoffed. Oystra looked at the old computer monitors up on the walls.
“Like Alley Cat.”
“She’s another villain, like us.”
“Yeah, she’d be great,” Card Shark said. “If you could find her.”
“Come on, how hard could it be to find an alley cat?” Oystra said, smiling. She knew she’d be the only one that thought it was funny. Dark Rose put her forehead on the table and Card Shark threw his back.
“What do you do, anyway?” Dark Rose asked, sitting up.
“I’m twice as strong as any man, and I can control any and all sea life,” she replied.
“What about you, Shark Boy?”
“It’s Card Shark,” he corrected with a scowl. “And I don’t have any powers.”
“Wow. Some leader,” she scoffed. “Can’t even defend himself.”
“Oh, yeah? What can you do?” Oystra asked her.
“Create portals to other worlds,” she replied. The room went silent. She nodded with a look on her face like she couldn’t believe it either. “Anyway…I know a guy-”
“I’m not surprised,” Oystra cut in, sighing.
“That might want to join our little club,” Dark Rose finished, scowling at Oystra.
“What does he do?” Card Shark asked.
“He messes around with arrows, pretty boring stuff. Anyway, I’ve got to go and I’ll see you guys tomorrow.” Dark Rose left the room.
As the door closed, Oystra looked at Card Shark. “Well, isn’t she full of joy?”
He simply replied with a smile. Then he got up and left to room, too. As Danny started to walk down the hall, he heard a woman called for him. He stopped, turned around, and saw her walking up to him.
“We need to talk,” she said.
“Just hear me out. I’m Retsacnal’s right hand, remember?”
“Why should I care?” he asked.
“I know a lot about you, Daniel. More than you know.”
“What do you want?” Danny asked. “Nothing good ever comes out of your mouth.” She handed him a file.
“I have another side mission for you.”
He opened the file.
“Find this girl and get close to her.”
Danny saw a picture of Rebbeca attached to the inside.
“Just like last time.”
“Yes. Now listen.”
“Haven’t you learned not to ask questions? I want to know everything about her,” she said.
Danny sighed. “How close do you want me to get to this one?”
“However close you have to, to get the job done,” she replied. “Just know, this one will be terminated. So don’t get attached. Retsacnal is counting on this one being done right, by the book.” She stopped and looked at him. “Now, will you do it?” Danny looked at the photo again.
“Yes… I’ll do it.”
