Chapter 45: Congratulations
Abigail sat in a hospital room, staring out the window. Rebbeca came back in the room with crutches and slowly climbed into the bed.
“How’d it go?”
“I can go home tomorrow, even though I don’t want to. I’ll be on crutches for two weeks, and then, I’m not supposed to do anything that requires a lot of moving for two weeks, but we all know that’s not going to happen.” She looked at Abigail and couldn’t find any physical response from her. “You did the right thing, you know…even if you didn’t mean to.”
“How are we supposed to get her in jail if she doesn’t remember?”
“I’m going to do a little recapping for a moment. Three days ago, we attempted to stop Whitney, and we did. Shadow Sweeper, Bandit, Caster, and Dark Rose got fifty years in prison. Yes, Whitney is still on trial, but there is no way she’s getting off easy. Drake told me you were so mad, your emotions were controlling your powers, and not you. So, when you touched Whitney, your powers wiped twenty years of her memory. As far as she’s concerned, Sam is three years old and you haven’t even been thought of.”
“Congratulations, Abby, you just put our mother in prison,” Sam said, as he and Drake walked into the room.
“What?” Abigail asked.
“Sam told the judge that you wiped her memory in order to protect our identities,” Drake said. “He bought it, and Whitney got life in prison.” Abigail hugged and kissed Drake. Then she hugged Sam. Bryan, John, Shawn, Sarah J, Bella, and David walked into the room.
“Good job, team,” Rebbeca said. “And since I’m not in the position to hug any one, you’ll have to settle for a hand shake.” They laughed and then, they all shook her hand.
“What are we going to do now that we are out of a job?” Drake asked.
“We’re far from done. But if you want to be done, you can leave and go have a normal life.”
They looked at each other, smiled, and looked at Rebbeca.
“I think I speak for all of us, when I say: we’re with you,” Drake said.
Rebbeca smiled. “Then suit up. There’s a town full of really confused people out there, and they’re going to need your help.”
“On it, boss,” Bella said, as everyone but Bryan, Shawn, and John left.
“You guys going home?”
“John and I are,” Shawn replied.
“I’m going to stick around for a while, help out with the cleanup,” Bryan said, as they started leaving the room.
“Okay, thanks.” She sighed. “Hey, Bryan.”
“Yeah?” He stopped and looked at her.
“Thank you so much for risking your team to help us save our city. If you ever need the same, don’t hesitate to ask.”
He nodded. “Well, then. I look forward to working with you.” He smiled and then left.
