Chapter 35: Jail Time

The Next Day…

“Hey, Drake…yeah, I’m fine…yes, I’m sure it was Bandit,” Rebbeca said into her phone. “Well, have fun cleaning and I’ll get there when I can…okay, bye.” She closed her phone and put it in her pocket, as she sat outside the hospital. She looked up and saw Sarah J pull up in front of her.

Sarah J got out of the car as Keko climbed into the back. “How are you feeling?”

“Like any person would that got shot with an arrow.” She got into the car.

“At least you didn’t lose your sense of humor,” Keko said.

Sarah J got into the car. “Okay, so are you ready for the next mystery?”

“Bring it,” Rebbeca said.

“Some guy went around and robbed every bank in town.”

They pulled out of the hospital parking lot.

“Why is that such a mystery?”

“Because he robbed all of them, twice.”

“I know,” Keko said. “You would think seven cop cars would have scared him off the first time.”

“Well did they catch him?”

“Oh they caught him alright.”

“Well, who is it?”

“Danny,” Sarah J said.

“What?” Rebbeca asked. “Why? I know he can be stupid sometimes, like we all can, but robbing four banks twice in one day? That doesn’t sound like something he would do.” She turned and looked at Keko. “And no, I’m not defending him. I’d just like to know why he did it.”

“That’s one of the questions,” Sarah J said.

“And he’s pleading innocent,” Keko added, “even though the cops have proof, solid proof, that he did it.”

“And he won’t talk to anyone but…you.”

“Great,” Rebbeca said, watching the trees fly by.

“So, what do we do?”

“You guys keep looking for Coal Dust…and I’ll go talk with my ex,” Rebbeca replied. “In jail.”

Kernsville Police Department.

Forty-Five Minutes Later...

Rebbeca got out of the car and brushed her hair out of her face.

“You sure you don’t want me to stay?” Sarah J asked.

“Yeah, I’m fine. Thanks for the lift.” She shut the door and then Sarah J pulled away.

“I have to say,” Sam said, walking up to her. “You look a lot better with a sling than you do with a hole in your arm.”

“Yeah, well.”

They started walking inside.

“You know me. I like to try new things.”

Sam smiled as they walked down the hall.

“How is he?”

“Fine. Besides the fact that he killed two officers and wounded twelve.”

“Sarah J said no one was hurt.”

“Her info is two hours out dated. Right now, he’s looking at life.” Sam led her down the hall to Danny’s holding room. “I’m going in with you.”

“No. He’ll talk more if I’m alone. Besides, even if he wasn’t hand cuffed to a table, you know he wouldn’t hurt me.”

“Yeah, well, it’s looking like none of us knew Danny.” He unlocked the door. Rebbeca pushed the door open and walked inside. Danny was hand cuffed to a table in the middle of the room.

Rebbeca leaned against the wall farthest away from him. “Two days.”

He looked at her.

“We broke up two days ago, and now you’re robbing banks and killing cops.”

“It’s not what you think,” Danny said.

“Then why don’t you tell me what happened?” She got closer and stood more under the light.

“What happened to you?”

“Your friends aren’t very happy that you betrayed them. And, quite frankly, neither am I.”

“Which one did that?”

“Does it matter? You’re the one that’s facing jail time.”

“Because they framed me.”

“They have proof you did it.”

“Yeah, proof that someone else did it.”

“Danny, what are you not telling me?”

“Sky is my half-brother. Whitney gave him the power to change his appearance to look like one person…me. So, every time he robs something, kills someone, or breaks the law in any way, he does it using my face. And every time, I get caught. That’s why there is no paper record of him anywhere.”

“Really?” Rebbeca asked. “That’s your story?”

“A member of your team is a talking monkey, and you think what I just said sounds ridiculous? I’m telling the truth.”

“Then why didn’t you tell me this before, when we were still a couple? You know, back when I still trusted you.”

Danny replied with silence, and looked away from her.

“Did you know my parents were going to die?” she asked hesitantly, not wanting to know the answer. Danny slightly dropped his head. Rebbeca bit her bottom lip as her eyes started to burn. “Did…” She swallowed. “Did you even love me?”

Danny looked up at her, their eyes locking. He looked tired and worn. He opened his mouth and then sighed, nearly on the verge of tears. “I didn’t want to.”

Rebbeca closed her eyes, a tear running down her cheek.

“But I did and I do. You weren’t just a mission. Not at first.”

“The whole thing was a lie?”

“No,” he shook his head. “I had no idea who you were when we met. But, Whitney, she…she told me to get close to you.”

“And you couldn’t refuse.”

“Rebbeca, it wasn’t-”

“No, don’t try to dumb it down.” She quickly whipped the tear from her face, becoming more enraged. “I don’t know what you were thinking, Danny. You played both sides, and now, no one trusts you. I suggest you pick a side, and stay on it. You got yourself into this mess, so I’m sure you’ll figure a way out.” She opened the door. “After all, that’s what you’re good at.” She left the room and slammed the door behind her.

She told Sam everything Danny told her, and to her surprise, Sam was thinking the same thing she was. Drake came and picked her up and then drove her to her house.

“We fixed the front door and taped the back door,” Drake said.

“Do you think he’s trying to trick us again?”

“I don’t know what to think any more.” She looked at Drake. “Don’t ever let go of Abigail.”

“I won’t.”

Rebbeca reached over a hugged him. She got out of the car and then watched him drive away before she went inside.
