Chapter 20: Sarah James

The Next Day…

Rebbeca walked through the halls of the high school on her way to the counselor’s office. Every time she misses one day of school, they send her to the counselor’s office. They, the principal, think she’s a troubled teen because her mom is dead and her dad is the sheriff.

Rebbeca’s used to it; she has a whole script written out that she tells the counselors. But, they got a new counselor and have caught on to her tricks.

She walked into the office and saw a blonde haired woman with blue eyes sitting behind the desk.

“Good morning, Rebbeca,” she said, as she took off her glasses and laid them on the desk. “My name is Sarah James.” They shook hands.

“Let’s cut the kern.” She sat down. “Why am I here?”

“The principal thought it’d be a good idea to sit everyone down and talk about what happened.”

“You mean what happened…three weeks ago? Look, this might score points with the parents, but not me. I’m fine.”

“Skipping school is not fine.”

“Look, Sarah J, this school has had seven different counselors in five years. And every one of them had the same speech and did the same thing the last one did. So, what makes you think you’re going to change me?”

“Because if you’re not careful, everyone’s going to know your secret.”

“What are you talking about?”

“You’re Dark Vengeance,” she said. “That’s what I’m talking about.”

“So…you know my secret, big whoop,” Rebbeca said. Sarah looked puzzled, “So have the last three counselors.”

“How?”

“Probably the same way you did. So, why didn’t you tell?”

“Because the city needs Dark Vengeance. So, as of now, you’re free to go.”

“Just like that?”

“Just like that,” Sarah said. Rebbeca got up to leave. “Let me know if you decide to start a team.”

Rebbeca nodded and left. She walked outside the school and looked across the parking lot. Her eyes landed on her car, and the one person she does not want to see standing next to it: Sam.

She sighed and walked across the parking lot to him. “What now? I haven’t seen Abigail all day.”

“Are you dating Danny Habanero?” Sam asked.

She took a step back, taken off guard. “Yeah…? I thought we’ve been over this. At the party?”

“Did you know he was Card Shark when you met him?”

“No.”

“Yet, you don’t look surprised. Does your dad know?”

“Okay, I think you’ve crossed the line,” she said, calmly. “Which, by the way, is something I thought was over. As is this conversation.” She took a step forward, reaching for the door handle. He stepped to the side, cutting her off before she could grab it.

She sighed, angry and uncomfortable with the developing situation. She stepped back, he hands slightly raised in surrender. “Okay. Okay, then, let’s talk.” She glanced across the parking lot at Drake, almost asking for his help. “Why is it such a big deal to you who I date?”

“Does your father know?” he repeated. She looked into his eyes and what she saw caused a chill to go up her spin. His eyes looked empty, like no one was home. Like Sam was gone.

“Uh…” She shook her head and then looked at him. “Yeah…yes, he knows.” He shook his head, looking agitated. “Are you okay, Sam? Are you in some kind of trouble?”

He grabbed her arm and slammed her against her car, cracking the glass. She gasped at his sudden movement. She glanced at her arm and winced, his hand still tight around it. “Sam, what are you doing?”

He grabbed her other arm and pushed her into the car. She winced as he pinned her against the car. He leaned in close, speaking in a low voice. “Consider this a warning, because next time we’ll be coming after you.”

Rebbeca looked over Sam’s shoulder and saw Drake and Shawn on their over. She looked back a Sam.

“Let go of her!”

Sam released one arm of her arms and turned around to see who spoke. Danny stood a few feet away, fists clenched at his sides.

“Back off, Habanero!” He released Rebbeca and went for Danny. Drake and Shawn stopped next to Danny.

“Come on, man. Why isn’t he on the ground, yet?” Drake asked him. Danny sighed.

“Probably cause he won’t risk going back to jail,” Sam mocked. “Do that and Rebbeca’s on her own.”

“Okay.” Shawn stepped in front of him and threw his fist into Sam’s face, slamming him to the ground. Shawn pulled back, taking in air through clenched teeth and flicking his hand.

Danny got low to the ground, near Sam’s face. “I suggest you leave…before I have him do that again.”

Sam looked around shaking his head. He stood and then stumbled off to his car.

Drake walked over to Rebbeca. “You okay?”

She looked down at her arms, bruised and cut from the glass. “Yeah, I’ll be fine.” She looked up at Danny. He could see the fear in her eyes. He walked over to her and wrapped his arms around her in a hug.

Drake turned to Shawn. “Nice hit.”

“Thanks.”

“Where’d you learn to hit like that?”

“Well, when your dad was one of the worst villains in the world, you tend to pick up a few things,” Shawn replied. “Why, jealous?”

“Nope, just wondering.”

“Yeah, whatever.”

They turned back to Danny and Rebbeca.

“Thanks, guys,” Rebbeca said, “I have no idea what his problem was.”

“What did he want?” Drake asked.

“He wanted to know why I was dating Danny.”

“That doesn’t sound like Sam,” Shawn said.

“Yeah, I mean, I know he’s a jerk, but this is crazy.” Drake looked at Danny. “It has to have something to do with you being Card Shark.”

“But the question is: does this have to do with Rebbeca or Dark Vengeance?” Shawn added.

“He knows?” Danny asked Rebbeca.

“Yeah, Shawn’s fine,” she replied.

“Yeah, and because of it, Drake and I have been coming to her aid, for years,” Shawn said, with a sarcastic smile.

“Thanks, Shawn.”

“So, now what?” Drake asked.

“I’m going to leave, go home.”

“Can you give us a lift?”

“Yeah. But first I need to tell Abby what happened.”

“I’ll follow.” Danny kissed her forehead and then walked to his car.

“Are you sure you’re okay?” Drake asked, as Shawn got in Rebbeca’s car.

“Yeah, why?”

“You just look…shaken.”

“I’ve never had that happen to me…well, not for a long time.”

“So, that’s what it is.”

“Just get in the car,” she said with a smile. He walked around to the passenger side as she made her way to the driver’s door. She pulled the door open, becoming light headed for a second. She waited for it to pass and then got into the car.
