Chapter 19: A Promised Birthday

The Next Day…

“It was like something you’d see in a movie,” Rebbeca said, as she told Abigail about what happened last night with Danny.

“What did you guys come up with?” Abigail asked.

“So, he’s going to be a good guy, under cover as a villain. And he’ll give us as much info as possible.”

“Cool. That should be interesting. How do you know we can trust him?”

“Yeah, so let’s go get Drake.”

“You’ll see.”

A few minutes later, they picked up Drake at his house, and left Kernsville on Highway 47. They drove until they came to the Riverstone exit.

“Where are we going?” Abigail asked, from the back seat.

“Well, we were a little busy on your birthday, thanks to Drake,” Rebbeca said.

“So, we are going to pretend like today is your birthday,” Drake said, ignoring Rebbeca’s comment.

“And we are taking you to the Lancaster Square Mall,” Rebbeca said, pulling into the parking lot.

“You guys didn’t have to,” Abigail told them.

“Yeah, we did,” Drake said, as they got out of the car. “Not only is this a birthday party…”

“It’s a thank you party,” Rebbeca added. “In the past week, you have saved us both.”

“For different reasons, of course.”

“Besides, I promised you we’d celebrate.”

“Yeah, you did,” Abigail said, bragging in a good way.

“Come on.”

A Week Later...

Abigail and Rebbeca sat on the bed in Rebbeca’s room. “So, how many times have you and Danny gone out?”

“Almost every night since I told him my secret,” Rebbeca replied. “It’s hard seeing him be a villain. Thinking of the things he’s done makes me sick.”

“I know I should have asked this sooner, but, does he know about Drake and me?”

“Well, everyone knows you’re a couple, but he doesn’t know about the hero thing. I’m sure he’s figured it out by now. But that is up to you.”

“I just don’t trust him, and I’m not sure why.” Abigail shook her head. “But there’s something not right about him.”

Danny walked into their headquarters and saw Sarah Whitney, sitting at the table.

“How’s the side mission?” she asked.

“Better than I thought. Believe it or not, I think she trusts me.”

“Good. Keep it that way. The more we know about her, the better. Have you found anything?”

“Nothing that wasn’t in your file. But don’t worry, at this rate, we’ll be married by next week.”

“Don’t let it go to your head!” she snapped. “We don’t want her finding out your secret.”

“She knows I’m Card Shark.”

“You know that’s not the secret I was talking about.” She stood up and walked toward the door. “Oh, and don’t fall in love with her. Believe me, if you do, it won’t end well. Remember what happened to the last one?”
