Chapter 18: Confessions
Rebbeca got out of her jeep and started walking toward her house, as her phone started saying: “Danny Habanero is calling”.
“I guess I should take this.” She pulled her phone out of her pocket. “Stone.”
“Hey,” Danny said. “You need something?”
“Yeah, I wanted to apologize for standing you up a few days ago. I should’ve called sooner. I had forgotten my dad grounded me, that night.” She could hear him breathing on the other end.
“That’s funny, I couldn’t make it either.”
“So, we’re good?”
A few moments of silence went by.
“We need to talk,” Rebbeca said. “Mainly about our relationship.”
“Yeah, we do.” He sighed. “Tonight?”
“Sure. How about we meet at the place you were helping me fix up?”
“Seven sounds good. Bye.” She hung up and then walked inside. She found May in the kitchen.
“Hey, when did you get back?”
“About an hour ago. Where’s dad?”
“He called a few hours ago and said he’d be working late. Abigail told me about what happened with Drake…you want to talk about it?”
“No,” she replied in a voice of defeat, and walked up stairs.
Abigail knocked on Drake’s door, and waited for him to answer. When he answered the door, he looked at her and smiled. “Long time, no see.”
“Yeah, it has been awhile, hasn’t it?” she asked, as she walked inside. They headed to his room. Drake leaned against his desk, as Abigail sat on the end of his bed. “So, am I talking to Drake or Foreshadow?”
“Do I want to know how you know?”
“Well, I know about Rebbeca. But it was the way she was acting when you were gone, that confirmed it.”
Drake nodded. “Good to know. So, how is she?”
“On top of the bullet hole you stitched, she has a bruise on her back from another one, and she had a cold for a few days.”
“But, she’s fine?”
“What about you?” Drake asked.
“What do you mean?”
“How have you been handling my kidnapping?”
“Well, if it weren’t for Rebbeca and her dad keeping me busy, I probably would have gone crazy,” she said, as he chuckled. “So, what really happened?”
“I was on my way to Riverstone, when I heard on the radio that some guys in costumes showed up at the police station. I had my suit with me, so I turned around and headed to the station,” he said. “Then, they came up behind me and put a bag over my head so I couldn’t see. They kept me in a dark room, where The Crystal Girl found me a few days later. And she…”
“What?” Abigail asked, knowing what he was going to say.
“She healed me.”
“How?” She knew he was trying to avoid the part where she kissed him.
“Well…I don’t know, really.”
Abigail stood up and walked over to him. “Was it something like this?” She wrapped her arms around his neck, pressing her lips against his. Drake closed his eyes, and when he opened them, The Crystal Girl was standing in front of him.
He smiled as he wrapped his arms around her waist. “You couldn’t have told me sooner?” he said, jokingly.
“I was having too much fun.”
He rolled his eyes as she smiled. “I’m going to remember that.” He pulled her in, put his mouth up to her ear, and whispered, “I love you.”
Abigail laid her head on his shoulder. “I love you, too.”
Rebbeca walked up to the door of the old church they fixed up. Her plan is to tell him everything. If he still wants to be with her, then he’s going to have to change. But if he doesn’t, she can’t put someone who knows her secret in jail. But, she’ll cross that bridge when she gets there.
She doesn’t want to make the same mistake she made with Drake. She tried to do the whole ‘solo, keep to yourself’ thing. Then, one night, Drake saw her change into Dark Vengeance, and to this day, he is still mad at her for lying to him.
Rebbeca unlocked the door and walked inside. A few minutes later, Danny walked in and saw her waiting for him. They sat down across the room from each other.
“Unless we can find some great solution…we can’t be together,” she told him.
“Rebbeca, I love you.” He looked into her eyes. “I have since the first day I saw you. You are the only thing I can think about and I can’t imagine a world without you in my life.”
She closed her eyes and leaned her head against the wall. “I know you’re Card Shark.” She watched his face drop. “For the past six years, I’ve been living a double life. My friends and family call me Rebbeca Stone, but the rest of the world knows me as…as Dark Vengeance.” His eyes got really wide. I’m an idiot, he thought. Rebbeca stood up wiping away tears.
“I don’t know what to say.” Danny shook his head and looked up at the ceiling. The room was silent. All they could hear was the rain pounding on the roof. “I’m sorry,” he whispered.
“For everything. Everything we’ve said and done to you…everything I’ve said and done to you.” He stood. “And, for everything we’ve ever done to The Crystal Girl and Foreshadow. My mission’s been to kill Dark Vengeance, that’s the only thing that’s kept me going, and yet…here you are, right in front of me. I’ve been in love with the woman I’m trying to kill, and I didn’t even know it. ”
“I forgive you, and I know they will too.” She stood and walked over to him, putting a hand on each side of his face.
“I shot you,” his voice sounded full of regret, almost helpless.
“Daniel Habanero, I am in love with you.” She looked him in the eyes. “Villain or not, that will never change. We’ll find a way for us to be together, but you need to trust me. And part of that means not being a bad guy anymore.”
He nodded. “I don’t know how to be anything else.”
“Do you trust me?”
“Then I’ll teach you.”
