Chapter 13: Foreshadow

Rebbeca woke up early in the morning to catch up on her homework and get her chores done. After a few hours of sitting at her desk, the silence was getting to her, more than anything. She tossed her pencil on the desk and walked down stairs. She found May in the kitchen. “Where’s dad?”

May poured a cup of coffee. “Something happened, and he had to leave early.”

“Did he say why?”

“No. Can you please turn on the news?”

Rebbeca walked over to the TV, and did as she asked. She got a glass of water while she waited for the news to come back on. Then, she sat down in front of the TV.

“Alright, let’s go to Bill, live at the scene,” the female anchor said. Then, the screen changed, showing a man standing outside the new, temporary police station.

“I am at the scene where a new masked man calling himself, Foreshadow, was kidnapped over four hours ago.”

Rebbeca spit out her water.

“Now, for those of you just joining us: I am at the scene where, four hours ago, a group of men and women broke Card Shark out of jail. We have been told by police to tell you to go about your day as if this hadn’t happened. Based on reports, Foreshadow is less than six feet tall, white, male, and has dark colored hair”

A sketch of Foreshadow appeared on the screen.

“If anyone sees a man of this description, we ask you to call 911.”

Rebbeca turned off the TV just as her phone rang. She pulled her phone out of her pocket and answered it. “Yeah, I know. I’m on my way.” She closed her phone and put it back in her pocket as she stood up.

“Who was that?”

“The Crystal Girl,” she replied. “I need to-”

“Go.” May cut her off, and then smiled at her. Rebbeca nodded, and walked outside.

“Activate: Dark Vengeance.”

Three minutes later, Dark Vengeance was in Abigail’s driveway.

“Nice ride,” The Crystal Girl said, as she got in the jeep. Dark Vengeance started driving toward town. “Got any ideas about who Foreshadow is?”

“No, I was hoping you would. I’m going to have a long talk with the sheriff, though.”

“Why would they take him? They want us.”

“Exactly. Here, put this on and never take it off.” Dark Vengeance handed her a pink watch.

“So we can keep in touch. And it will let me know when you’re in danger.”

“That’s what I said.”

They pulled into the City Hall parking lot.

“Why are we here?” The Crystal Girl asked, as they got out of the car.

“This is, temporarily, the police station,” Dark Vengeance replied, as they walked up to the door. “You know, since the other one burned down.” She smiled and opened the door. They walked in and saw the sheriff arguing with three officers. “What’s going on?” Dark Vengeance demanded, in a deep voice. Everyone stopped and looked at them.

“Nothing,” Frank replied, as he walked over to them. The officers left.

“Good, because I need to know what happened.”

“Follow me” They followed him down the hall to his office.

“Wait here,” Dark Vengeance told The Crystal Girl. Then, she and Frank walked inside and closed the door.

“What took you so long?” He sat down.

“Oh, I’m sorry, I had to find out on the news,” she said, in an angry voice.

“I had no idea it was this bad, and I didn’t have time to call you. If I knew heroes were involved, don’t you think I would’ve said something?” He could tell she wanted to change the subject. “What is she doing here?”

“She’s my partner, end of story. What are you doing to find Foreshadow?”

“We’ve been stretched too thin. Besides, we should be finding Card Shark. For all we know, Foreshadow could be working with them.”

“He’s not.”

“How do you know?”

She hesitated to answer. “Drake.”

“Foreshadow is Drake,” she replied. When the realization of what she said hit him, Frank closed his eyes.

“Who else knows?”

“I’m the only one he told about the device, and we’re going to keep it that way.”

“Not even her?” He pointed to the door.

“Not even her.”

“Can we see where he was being held?”

“Yeah.” He got up and walked out the door. They walked down the hall and through a door. Just inside was another door.

“This is it?” The Crystal Girl asked.

“Wow…no wonder he got out.”

“Crystal,” Dark Vengeance told her, in a ‘you shouldn’t have said that’ tone of voice. “How many guards?”

“One,” Frank replied.

“But there’s no sign of forced entry.”

“Because the guard opened it.”

“What?” The Crystal Girl said.

“But he claims he didn’t do it.”

“Where’s the guard?” Dark Vengeance asked.

“You want a word with him?”

“Well, I have two things to say: one, thanks for getting me out of jail, and two, what on Earth were you thinking?” Danny asked everyone, at their headquarters. “And who are you?” He pointed to Rachel.

“Rachel Johnson, aka Caster,” she told him.

“Thank you, because that tells me…so much.” He sighed and turned to Samantha. “Sam, I left you in charge. What happened?”

“We heard you were in jail, so we broke you out,” she said. Danny threw his head back and rolled his eyes.

“What I mean is why did you take this guy?” He pointed to a monitor showing the security camera footage from the room they have Foreshadow in. Everyone pointed to Angel.

“What?” she asked.

“Why don’t you tell him?” Sky suggested.

“Fine. We need something to draw Dark Vengeance out.”

“Why?” Danny asked.

“Well, that is the point,” Bella said. “That’s why we’re here.”

“For once Kitty Cat’s got a point,” Angel said.

“So, what do we do with him?” Danny asked. “How do we know he’s not some guy playing dress up?”

“Aren’t we all?” Rachel asked.

“I say we use him as bait to get dumb and dumber out into the open,” Angel said. “And kidnapping Foreshadow was step one.”

Dark Vengeance walked into a room with nothing in it but a table and two chairs. A few officers brought the guard into the room, and left. “I take it you’re Jim Craig.” She looked at his file. “Have a seat.” The guard, Jim, sat down on the other side of the table.

“Look, I didn’t do it.”

“Really? Because we have evidence that tells us otherwise.” She sat a small TV on the table and pressed play:

Jim was sitting outside the door Card Shark was behind. Then, two girls, wearing costumes, walked in.

“You guys can’t be in here,” Jim told them. A girl wearing a black costume put her hand on her red belt and said, “Let him out.” Jim did as she said and the screen went black.

“You want to tell me why you let him out?”

“I don’t remember letting him out. She put her hand on her belt, it glowed, and the next thing I know, Card Shark is out.”

“I believe you.”

“You do?”

“Yes.” She walked to the door.

“I owe you one,” Jim said, as she opened the door.

“I’m just doing my job,” she replied, then left.

“So?” The Crystal Girl asked.

“He didn’t do it.”

They walked to the sheriff’s office and went inside.

“He didn’t do it.”

“We have him on camera,” Frank said.

“He was under some kind of mind control.”

“That’s impossible.”

“Fine. Believe what you want. I’m not wasting my time trying to prove reality to you,” she said. “I’m going to go look for Foreshadow.” Dark Vengeance stormed out of his office.

“We need to find out what he knows,” Rachel said. “For all we know, he could know who Dark Vengeance is.”

“So, we make him talk,” Angel said.

“I take it you know how,” Bella said. Danny and Oystra walked in the room.

“Retsacnal wants an update every hour, but besides that, we can do whatever we want,” Danny told them.

“So, what’s the plan?” Oystra asked. They stood there waiting for someone to say something.

“Dark Vengeance knows you mean business, right?” He pointed to Angel.

She nodded. “You should have seen how close I got to killing her.”

“What stopped you?”

“A bullet proof vest.”

“Me, too,” Danny said. They could tell he was thinking hard about this.

“So, what’s the plan, Boss?” Bella asked.

“Sky, Angel, find out what Foreshadow knows. Rachel, Bella, keep working on those computers. And Sam, come with me.”

Everyone split up to do what they were told.

The Crystal Girl walked outside of City Hall and into the parking lot, where she saw Dark Vengeance. She got in the jeep and looked at her. “What was that about?”

“Don’t worry about it,” Dark Vengeance replied. “We have more important things to do.” She opened her laptop.

“We’ll find him.”

“My dad told you, didn’t he?”

“He didn’t tell me anything.”

“Hey, look at this.” She turned the lap top toward The Crystal Girl. She was watching the news, but the screen kept getting fuzzy…until the screen change. Instead of the news, it was Dark Rose.

“Hello, Kernsville. Or should I say, Dark Vengeance?” she said with a smile. “For those of you who don’t know, my name is Dark Rose. And we have something Dark Vengeance wants.”

She stepped behind the camera, showing Foreshadow tied to a chair, dripping with blood. “Yes, he’s still alive…but not for long.” She grabbed a handful of his hair and yanked his head back. “Come to the Airport at eight, tonight, if you want him back. If not, well…I think you know what will happen.”

The screen went black.
