A Culture Not My Own

I do not know much about the culture of the characters or how they should be portrayed and I actually found that the most interesting part of the story. I did struggle with the narrative language, but that didn't detract from my experience. What I felt was the weakness of this book was the lack of character. I felt no connection to the characters or their plight. In my humble opinion the boom needs to be fleshed out, less narration from the author and more characterization of the players. Why does Ash and Biju love each other so much that they would defy their families? I didn't get an answer for that, it was more of a because the author says so than because there was an emotional connection. I think the true potential for the novel can be reached with more work. While I was reading I felt more like someone was telling me what happened in their life rather than experiencing it with them. That is why I live to read, to experience it not be told it. It has great potential, just needs more work.

Shallow Characters

I've made three attempts to read the story, and could not get past chapter 3. I really wanted to like this novel, but I felt no connection to any of the characters, no reason to care about the plight Mary and her children were going through. Obviously with the number of five star reviews it could just be me and what I expect.
